Like Father, Like Daughter

A Comedy-Drama Starring Kristen Bell, Kelsey Grammer, and Seth Rogen and Directed by Lauren Miller in her Feature-Length Directorial debut which was released on Netflix on August 3rd, 2018.

On the day of her wedding, young work-obsessive executive Rachel (Bell) gets left at the alter. After a heavy drinking session Rachel ends up on the Caribbean cruise that she had booked for her honeymoon with her estranged father, Harry (Grammer) who came to her wedding. From there the two begin to reconnect and reflect on their lives and past mistakes.

Tropes

  • Disappeared Dad: Harry left Rachel and her mother when Rachel was five years old, which he deeply regrets and is trying to make up for lost time.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: When Rachel has drinks with Jeff and goes back to his room, Harry becomes increasingly worried about her when she doesn’t return to their cabin, tries calling Jeff’s room and finally goes to his room looking for her only to realise she and Jeff were in the middle of having sex.
  • Karaoke Bonding Scene: Rachel and her estranged father Harry finally reconcile with a karaoke rendition of Styx's "Come Sail Away" (appropriately performed on a cruise ship).
  • Married to the Job: Rachel was so work obsessed that she was on a business call during her wedding, which results in her fiancé leaving her at the alter. She continues working on the cruise, even as her father and coworkers encourage her to enjoy herself and have a break.
  • Scenery Porn: When not cruising through the Caribbean Sea, the characters visit some very beautiful tropical paradises. The waterfall gets a special mention.
