Fanon for Little Witch Academia

  • While their relationship is simply platonic in canon. Many fans interpret Akko, Diana, and Andrew as being in a Bisexual Love Triangle with each other, with the most common take being that Andrew and Diana are in love with Akko, while Akko is crushing on one or both of them at the same time (which one Akko leans towards, largely depending on the fan's preferred pairing). It helps that despite them being only friends, official material has played with the idea, such as the cover for the Volume 4 DVD.
  • Although the series doesn’t touch on the romantic and sexual orientations of the cast due to No Hugging, No Kissing, that didn’t stop fans from having their interpretations.
    • Diana is almost always portrayed as a lesbian in fanworks due to her lack of confirmed interest in the male characters and her Les Yay with Akko. Even fics that don't pair her with Akko will usually pair her off with another woman instead, such as Amanda or her roommates. While there are fanworks that ship her with Andrew or rarely, a male OC, they are very rare or are usually a temporary relationship that Diana breaks off to be with Akko instead.
    • Akko is often depicted as a lesbian, bisexual, or pansexual in fanworks due to her subtext with several female characters and in the latter two's case, her having implied feelings for Andrew. Ironically, the latter two interpretations are often only present in works that pair Akko with the girls, as those that ship her with Andrew just has her be heterosexual instead.
    • Due to her subtext with Croix, Ursula Callistis/Chariot Du Nord is frequently portrayed as being a lesbian, with a popular headcanon amongst fans being that her former friendship with Croix was a romantic relationship that ended poorly. Her and Croix having lingering feelings for each other is also a popular headcanon, with the two often rekindling their relationship or having a Relationship Upgrade after Croix's Heel–Face Turn.
    • Hannah is widely interpreted as being bisexual, due to her crushing on Andrew at one point and a scene in Chamber of Time in which she falls in love with Amanda thinking she's a guy thanks to a picture she found and then keeping the picture even after finding out the truth. Her Pseudo-Romantic Friendship with Barbara has only fueled this.
    • Amanda being a lesbian is also widespread amongst the fanbase, due to her rebellious personality and her tomboyish looks making her popular amongst the LGBT Fanbase. The fact that she has some minor Les Yay with Akko helps. While some fanworks ship her with Louis or Andrew, they are very rare. There are also some fans who interpret her as being a transgender or non-binary person, due to her tomboyish attitude and her tendency to crossdress when sneaking into Appleton Academy.
    • Really, it isn't uncommon for Luna Nova to be full of lesbians, if not be a mini Gayborhood, with students and even teachers often hooking up with each other. The fact that Luna Nova is an One-Gender School (which is historically a famous setting for Yuri works) helps.
  • Akko having ADHD is a very popular and widespread headcanon amongst fans, due to her behavior being similar to ADHD symptoms.
  • A less common fanon is that Diana, and by extension, the Cavendish family, is Scottish, due to the Cavendish Manor being located in Wedinburgh, which is one letter away from Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It helps that the producers don't exactly deny this being the case.
  • While Sucy is confirmed to come from Southeast Asia, unlike the other characters, it's unknown as to which country she comes from, as official profiles merely list her as coming from the subregion with no specific country mentioned. However, fans have interpreted Sucy as being from the Philippines, due to a few hints that possibly point to her coming from there (one of which being her broom in the first episode of the series, which is a Walis Tambo, a broom commonly used in Filipino households).
  • Due to her fangs and extremely pale skin tone, Sucy is often depicted as secretly being a Half-Human Hybrid in fanworks. While her second half tends to vary across fans, one of the most popular and reoccurring ones is that she's half-dragon, due to the aforementioned fangs and her repressed self transforming into a dragon in episode 8.
  • In fanworks where Akko and Diana end up having children, their fan-child or at least one of their children will most likely be named "Bernadette" after the latter's late mother. Alternatively, if they end up getting multiple kids, it's common for them to be given both Japanese and English names, with those having a closer relation to Akko having a Japanese name and those closer to Diana having an English name.
  • It’s not uncommon for the Cavendish family to be depicted as an only female family, with some even going as far as to depict them as using magic to reproduce, particularly due to the only confirmed members being female and all of them looking alike. This is despite Diana mentioning to Akko that her family has a long lineage of both female witches and male wizards in The Enchanted Parade.
  • In a kind of double Translation Convention, some like to perceive everyone speaking with American accents in the English dub as Akko having a terrible ear for accents and being unable to distinguish everyone else's from the American accent she learned the language in.
  • Night patrolling, in which certain students are tasked with monitoring the hallways at night and making sure students are in their rooms, is an incredibly prevalent concept in fanworks. Especially in shipping ones as it allows the pair in question to meet under more discreet conditions than normal. However, it is only really a thing in fanon as there are no implications that such an idea exists in canonnote , as official works usually have the Luna Nova staff and teachers like Finnelan watch the hallways at night instead of the students, with Keisuke Satō's manga revealing the school has a full-blown security system in place.
  • Woodward and Beatrix are occasionally depicted as being shippers of Chariot/Croix and Diana/Akko, respectively in fanon. As an extension of this, fans have humorously theorized that the reason why Akko wasn't affected by the curse like Daryl and her daughters were (despite being an outsider) in episode 20 was because Beatrix had accepted her as Diana's wife.
  • Akko, based on her frequent attempts at flying even before attending Luna Nova, is often seen as being in better physical shape than most of the other little witches. Outside of Amanda.
  • While it's vague in canon on whether or not Diana and Andrew are related, fans tend to frequently theorize them as being distant cousins.
  • The white mage outfit Akko dons in The Enchanted Parade is typically interpreted as being her performer outfit in Time Skip fanfics.
  • It is incredibly common for fanworks to depict Diana as being unfamiliar and Hopeless with Tech, on top of being poor at non-magic related tasks (such as cooking without magic) in general, due to her traditionalist nature and over-reliance on magic. This is largely done as a way to give her more flaws.
    • On the flip side, Akko is often depicted as being good at non-magic related tasks and having a better understanding of modern technology than Diana does due to her muggle-based background.
  • In Time Skip fics, Diana is usually depicted as being a doctor and/or the head of a large medical corporation due to her family's long medical history. Alternatively, she tends to be depicted as Luna Nova's new headmistress after Holbrooke passes away due to her status as Luna Nova's top student.
  • Due to her studious and hardworking nature, Diana is often portrayed as being a Workaholic who tends to overwork herself to the point of getting ill and/or exhausted. This bit of fanon would lead to a very common scenario in Diana/Akko fanfics in which Akko ends up having to take care of Diana because of her workaholic tendencies and/or attempting to drag her away from her work to get her to relax.
  • Due to male magic users not being as prominent in the series as female magic users, fans usually interpret magic to be a female-dominated field, with male magic users often being in the minority.
  • It's widely accepted in fanon that although Akko is very fluent in English, she tends to slip back into her native Japanese on occasion whenever she expresses extreme emotions, such as being shocked or enraged.
  • While the Teri Terio manga's canon status to the original short films is ambiguous, many fans interpret the manga as being prequels to the films, due to the Shiny Rod's absence outside of flashbacks and the first chapter showing how she first met her friends, as well as Diana and her Girl Posse.
  • Before the TV series and during the earlier episodes, Diana's parents were frequently depicted in fanon as being strict and stuffy perfectionists who would frequently enforce Tough Love on Diana for her to succeed and live up to the Cavendish name, with Diana often having a complicated relationship with them as a result. Episode 19 would quickly kill this fanon by implying that Diana's mothernote  was not only a good parent and a caring and affectionate person who was loved by Diana, but that she passed away when Diana was six. That said, some fics today continue to depict them as this.
  • Akko will often call Diana "Dia" in fan works as a shortened Affectionate Nickname for her.
  • Amongst the crowd of Luna Nova Alumni in "Samhain Festival", there is a woman who is depicted with blue hair and glasses. While it's not confirmed who the woman is, many fans have already concluded that she is Mary's mother, due to their similar wavy hairstyles and having the same hair color.
  • Akko is sometimes depicted in fanworks to have a large scar on her back as a result of being accidentally injured by Diana via a heat blast spell in the second episode of the TV series.
