In her quest to uncover the secrets of the Abyssal Forge, Rarity will have to use all her charm, wit, and skill—and rely on allies old and new—as the unlikeliest of ponies once again attempts to save the world in style.

But when Rarity repays her with a little makeover, Applejack lets slip her days of living in Manehattan and trying to be sophisticated, which gives Rarity ideas...
Synopsis: Set in the far future after Celestia and Luna mysteriously vanished and the sun and moon froze in the sky, Antipodes is the the story of two ponies thrust out into the harsh new world on an adventure to uncover what happened to the world so long ago.
Synopsis: Ever since the internet came to Equestria, the inevitable was going to happen. Porn has become easy to come by, and stumble across. Rarity discovers porn made of herself, and becomes disillusioned with her fans. How should she react?
Synopsis: As Celestia leaves Canterlot to serve as a mediator in a foreign crisis, Luna finds herself forced to rule alone for a couple of months. At first the task does not appear to be too difficult, especially with their dearest bookworm friend Twilight Sparkle as a personal advisor. But when a series of ritual murders takes place, they realize that they will have to face the greatest danger to ever threaten the kingdom.
Comments: It soon makes you think "well, that escalated quickly", yet it keeps escalating, until all shit goes to hell in a handbasket. It's epic.
Comments: Epic adventure story featuring our favorite blue pegasus. Extreme long runner: by August 2013, this story and its sequels Eljunbyro and Innavedr are approaching 600 chapters and the word count has passed 600,000. If the author isn't joking, he's planning to write a total of 12 stories of 200 chapters each. Usually, one new chapter is released every day.
Synopsis: My name is Lyra Heartstrings, and you will not remember me. You won't even remember this conversation. Just like with everypony else I've ever met, everything I do or say will be forgotten. Every letter I've written will appear blank; every piece of evidence I've left behind will end up missing. I'm stuck here in Ponyville because of the same curse that has made me so forgettable. Still, that doesn't stop me from doing the one thing that I love: making music. If my melodies find their way into your heart, then there is still hope for me. If I can't prove that I exist, I can at least prove that my love for each and every one of you exists. Please, listen to my story, my symphony, for it is me.
Synopsis: Prince Blueblood is thankful that if nothing else, the Grand Galloping Gala is finally over and that he can put the worst night ever behind him. Unfortunately, fate has other plans in mind when he wakes up in the morning to find out that the Grand Galloping Gala is that night. And every night from then on until he can figure out how to truly make it the Best Night Ever for all involved.
Note: The plot is lifted wholesale from Groundhog Day, but does well to give it the Friendship Is Magic spin on things.
Synopsis: A lone changeling left behind after the failed invasion of Canterlot has been taken in by the Royal Guard, and both he and ponies find their assumptions about each other challenged.
Comments: Written by the same man who wrote The Conversion Bureau: Not Alone, it's eloquently written from not the perspectives of the ponies but from the changeling, Pincer, whose experiences lead to a challenge in what he's believed in all his life and his effect on the other ponies around him.
Synopsis: After a spell gone wrong by Twilight nearly kills a recently-escaped Discord, Fluttershy takes it upon herself to save the spirit, despite all he's done. Will her compassion stir something in the spirit's indifferent heart, or will he always be the enemy she knew?
Comments: A heartwarming, sometimes sad AU, with an excellently written Discord. Also has an interesting take on his history with Celestia and Luna.
Synopsis: An ongoing series by the same writer of Princess Celestia Hates Tea and Contraptionology fame. These short stories document the life of Equestria's youngest princess, Princess Cadance, as she takes on her first royal duties as an ambassador to Cloudsdale.
Comments: If you religiously guard your Fanon ideas of Cadance, look elsewhere, but for everyone else, there's a wonderful, character-centric story about one experienced writer's own interpretation of Cadance's development into the beautiful princess she is currently.
Synopsis: Sometime after the wedding, Twilight Sparkle begins to have recurring nightmares about what would have happened back at Canterlot. This along with the stress put onto her caused her to develop a PSTD related to the wedding, putting her friendship, morals, and even her sanity into question.
Comments: Yes, this is yet another Accusation Fic set after A Canterlot Wedding. However, where some have played the trope with Sweet Dreams Fuel and others toy with it through Nightmare Fuel, this simply drenches it with the tears of readers. Everything the other fics have done, this has done more clear cut, and in a way that would probably be realistic for someone who is known for being a neurotic. Forgotten morals being brought up again? It's Twilight in the middle of her PSTD trying to recall the messages that weren't brought up during the rehearsal. Protests over the failure to prevent the invasion? The citizens were about to attempt a no-confidence motion. Calling out the characters? It's from the one person we least expect. The story is also a pretty good Hurt/Comfort Fic too.
Synopsis: The Changeling of the Guard is written from the point of view of Idol Hooves, a very unusual changeling in exile from The Hive. Gifted with curiosity unnatural for his kind, Idol goes on a journey through Equestria in a Quest for Identity, eventually ending up among Princess Celestia's Royal Guard. Initially set quite some time before Luna's redemption, the author claims that the story will eventually retell the events of A Canterlot Wedding and beyond from a very different perspective.
Comments: I don't think I've ever seen a changeling fanfic go into quite so much depth about The Hive, its workings, and the details of shapeshifting itself, but those are all just bonuses. At its heart, The Changeling of the Guard is a damn good story of a misfit Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life, with a sharp attention to detail and a wickedly dry sense of humor. It's excellent so far, and I'm eagerly anticipating more. Needs Wiki Magic Love.
Synopsis: Minuette's cutie mark is a hourglass, and so, she is destined to enter the ranks of the mysterious and powerful Chronomasters. After finishing her education she remains under the tutelage of Time Turner, until one day her teacher is in dire need of rescue. Can one simple mare brave the nest of the changelings?
Comments: Features great writing and a fresh perspective on the characters.
Synopsis: A Mad Scientist arrives in town, teaching a way to link talent with power using complex machinery. Applejack, feeling overshadowed by Twilight, is at first happy with this, but that fades when the good doctor drugs the town into being obsessed with SCIENCE! Can Applejack overcome insane townsponies, animal mecha, Nightmare Scoot, and her own demons? Or will she succumb... to Contraptionology?
Comments: A Crack Fic in the finest sense of the term, cleverly mixing hilarity and poignancy.
Synopsis: Twilight Sparkle and her friends find themselves in another universe, and their very being there threatens to tear their own world apart. They must find their way home, with the help of some new-found friends. But their quest is not without its obstacles, and this new world is ready to test their courage and their strength to their fullest...
Comments: Very well written, has a great plot, and has that feel you get when traveling into the unknown.
Synopsis: One day, Rainbow Dash visits Pinkie Pie at Sugarcube Corner. After eating one of Pinkie's cupcakes though, she gets more than she bargained for. Warning: grimdarkasfuck. Contains scenes of explicit violence and gore; children and weak-stomached adults need not enter. This story is of interest as one of the most notorious shockfics in the fandom.
Comments: In the extremely likely event that you need an antidote, The Light in the Darkness is recommended below. There's also a lot of other alternate endings written, such as this one.◊
Synopsis: What do you do when you survive an experience so horrific, it changes your life forever? A last minute rescue saves Rainbow Dash from certain death in the basement of Sugarcube Corner. Now, the broken and scarred Pegasus must come to terms with what Pinkie has done to her, try and find out why their friend committed these unspeakable atrocities, and find a way to move on.
Synopsis: Nightmare Moon rejects her chance at redemption and destroys the Elements of Harmony. Unfortunately for Nightmare Moon the disruption caused by her Eternal Night results in Discord escaping his prison. When he overthrows Nightmare Moon and ends Eternal Night, Discord finds himself in the strange position of being hailed as a savior. Can Twilight Sparkle guide him into being a better ruler?
Synopsis: A horrible Cataclysm has turned all of Equestria into a Wasteland of barren ash and twilight desolation. The Sun and the Moon have been destroyed. Everypony has died — including Princesses Luna and Celestia. But one pony miraculously survives; she is a lone wanderer, the last of her kind, surrounded by menacing creatures that hate her. She navigates the Wastes in an airship and scavenges off the blighted landscape to keep herself alive. Then one day she meets an old companion who grants her a gift, the chance to go back in time to the warm and sunny days of Ponyville, where her dead friends live in happiness. How far will the last pony venture into these joyous days of Equestria, even if she fully knows that there is no way to change the horrible fate of everypony she loves?
Synopsis: The truth is revealed! From award* winning writer of such academic essays as “Soylent Green is Ponies” and “A Fragrant Offense: Princess Luna and the Invasion of Privacy”, third year University of Canterlot student, Loose Change, has finished her magnum opus, uncovering the secrets of Equestrian history, spanning from the Pre-Equestrian Age to the rise of Princess Twilight Sparkle. Famously noted for causing her professor to laugh so hard he broke a wing while marking it, this revisionist abuse of history reveals the true lies and untold lie-truths behind the reign of Celestia, and Equestria as a whole.
Comments: Just a fun, interesting take on Equestrian history. An entertaining read.
Synopsis: Dotted Line, cabinet secretary of the Equestrian Civil Service, does in no particular order: Does paperwork, get infested by an Eldritch Abomination, lie to reporters, valiantly fight off custard and jam, swears at his boss, prepare for a surprise visit of the worst sort, deal with bratty teenage goddesses, charge an Eldritch Abomination, celebrates Hearthwarming, and does more paperwork.
Comments: The writing in this series is simply fantastic, with many readers comparing it to the style of Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett, full of dry wit in the face of absurdity. The author set out to present his characters as "heroic bureaucrats" and ably succeeded in Dotted Line, a short-tempered but determined Cabinet Secretary and one of the best OCs of all time.
Synopsis: War comes to Equestria: with despair, with starvation, with suffering and with sacrifice. And the ponies must learn how to keep true to their values while surviving not just the rigors of battle, but the desolation of total war.
Comments: Dark, but not grim, does an excellent job at balancing despair and hope. Illustrates well the effect war has on the ponies of a peaceful country, who have never experienced hardship.
Synopsis: Many years after sending her beloved protégée to Ponyville, unease sits heavily on the heart of Equestria's Sun Princess, as her relationship with Twilight Sparkle seems to have cooled despite all they've accomplished together. On the advice of her sister, she sets out to investigate and resolve the lost connection with her most faithful student. But a grave sin from a distant past finally catches up with Celestia, and threatens to drive them apart forever.
Synopsis: After her outburst during the Canterlot Wedding Fiasco, Twilight's mind, in a very dark place, finally breaks. Not into a homicidal rage- she simply does not care anymore. With Twilight no longer wishing to be part of Friendship or Harmony, it's up to her friends and family to undo the damage they've done.
Comments: An amazing story that, aside from pointing out the flaws with the Canterlot Wedding Fiasco, also features one of the Mane Six being broken without becoming the stock homicidal killer. It should also be noted that, while everyone is shown to have made mistakes, no one is shown to be completely at fault- the story makes it abundantly clear that Twilight's mind is focusing entirely on the bad and ignoring the good.
Be aware that the above synopsis has little to do with the actual story. This fic is about a Marty Stu OC, and can best be described as Dragon Ball Z with ponies.
Synopsis: Twilight Sparkle is stressed, for some very good reasons: it's only been a few weeks since she was moved to Canterlot Castle to assume control of the duties of a princess, and she's still getting used to the constant stream of paperwork; she's trying to figure out when and how she'll be able to see her Ponyville friends again; and, to top it off, her first day off from princess duty is the night of her first date. So, seeing her obvious stress, Twilight's one and only BBBFF Shining Armor decided to tell her how his life started down the road leading to his crowning Prince of the Crystal Empire...
Comments: A wondeful short-but-sweet story about the first date of Shining Armor in Princess Cadance. Setting their story as a story Shining tells Twilight to calm her down works perfectly, giving even more sibling-love heartwarming next to romantic-love heartwarming. This story strikes has just the right balance between prose and plot progression, humorous and heartwarming, and it's a must-read for anyone who likes Cadance or Shining Armor.
Synopsis: College, most see it as that time in your life that you struggle through to make the rest of your life easier, but what happens once you're out of it? For some ponies, they have a job lined up, they move somewhere new, and go into a daily routine of just living life. Others seem to have life thrust upon them in ways they will never expect, but everypony is different right? Whoever said life gets boring once all the prep is done was wrong. Follow the day to day misadventures of a group of ponies starting what some would call the prime of their lives, a time when anything can happen. From the day to day jobs, to meeting new friends, to maybe some romance, and of course the crazy adventures you come to expect from the town of Ponyville. Yes, some say college is the way to prepare for your life, but many wise ponies will tell, as with many things... "The end of one adventure is only the beginning of another."
Comments: Original character slice-of-life done right. Excellent characterization and writing techniques, with only a few grammar and spelling errors as its only downfall.
Synopsis: When Fluttershy received her certification as a fog specialist, she only wanted a plausible excuse to write off the expenses associated with her ground-based house on her taxes. However, when an accident in Cloudsdale sends a blanket of industrial-grade clouds rolling towards Ponyville, Fluttershy suddenly finds herself in charge of coordinating the response, mostly because she's the only fog specialist in the area. Comments: Book One of a planned trilogy called The Adamant Triskelion. The Abyssal Forge is Book Two.

Synopsis: Twilight gets Starswirl's spell right the first time, causing all six Elements to ascend at once. But Celestia and Luna still need more alicorns for their plan to end mortality, so they send the six new Princesses out to find more. Though Luna would prefer that they focus on finding some alicorn stallions.
Notes: Nicely inverts the immortality sucks trope that seems particularly endemic to MLP fanfics, the princesses are tired of burying their loved ones but they'd much rather make everypony else immortal than the alternative.
Synopsis: Twilight isn't having a very good day. An experimental spell blew up in her face, an army of changelings is attacking Canterlot, and she just died. Yet somehow, it looks like it's going to keep going downhill from here. Given the chance to correct what's gone wrong, Twilight swears she's going to fix all this even if it kills her. Which it will. Frequently.
Synopsis: The once "great and powerful" traveling magician Trixie is reduced to abject poverty, her career completely ruined after the Ursa Minor incident. And while Twilight Sparkle tries to help redeem her name, a mysterious and very wealthy businessmare seems to be particularly keen on keeping her down. Just what is their connection, and what are her intentions?
Comments: It starts a bit weak. And it's annoying how Trixie doesn't relent on her illeism. But the amount of detail in the writing is quite impressive - there are even lyrics, as if it was a script for a musical episode, and the mindgames in the final chapter are breathtaking.
Synopsis: Applejack's got a slight problem. The kind of problem that she really can't turn to her family and friends for help. Unfortunately for her, ponies are already starting to figure out what it is...and it's not going to be easy for the Element of Lycanthrop...Honesty.

Synopsis: After a very complicated birth, little Twilight Sparkle's survival seemed to be nothing short of a miracle. Or was it? Eighteen years later, the changeling queen comes to take her daughter back home...
Comments: A retelling of "A Canterlot Wedding" with a twist that you already know. Spoilers? Nah, even the description and cover picture give it away, and it happens in the prologue. The story itself explores Twilight's conflicting loyalties, Chrysalis' motivations, the origin of the changeling race, and the darker moments of Celestia's past. A little rough on the edges (English is not the author's first language), but overall very solidly written, perhaps better than that episode (for one, Chrysalis actually puts some effort at playing a convincing Cadance and doesn't sabotage her own plans). It is epic, it is sentimental, it flies from tragic to feelgood and back again repeatedly without ever getting tacky.
Notes: A collab between Mobius of the Moon and RLYoshi, the latter of whom may be known for writing To Err is Equine, a part of The Chessgame Of The Gods. Miscellaneous is better than it sounds, despite featuring OC ponies and only recently starting.

And among all the guests present at the reception, a few of them are going to be surprised with what new relationships are formed.
Comments: Don't let the description fool you. In 2 short chapters, an unprecedented amount of hilarity is extracted from the simple premise of Celestia not liking tea. If you need something to lighten up your mood after reading to many grimdark fanfics, look no further.
Synopsis: Celestia is bored. So bored, in fact, that she allows herself to get kidnapped by a bunch of Dumb Crooks. Hilarity Ensues.
Comments: This is freaking hilarious, and Celestia's manipulative, mischievous, and kind sides are all well-balanced with each other. It really makes you wonder how the Princess would react on a day off.

Comments: Yeah, I know, another OC x main character shipfic. However, this one actually features Hidden Depths and showcases character development in the OC and in the canon character. It also done a fair amount of fascinating world building, as usual for the author. Endorsed by Brony2983, the author of To Love A Goddess.
Synopsis: Alternate Universe: Instead of Twilight Sparkle, Princess Celestia made Rainbow Dash her personal student instead! Follow her through the events of the 1,000th Summer Sun Celebration. A reimagining of "Friendship is Magic".
Comments: On the surface, a really bizarre premise, but Trinary not only pulls it off, but does it exceptionally well. The prose is well-written, but what really sells it is the fantastic characterizations. Despite the altered setting, the ponies are perfectly in character, and the events and interactions are completely faithful and realistic to the show. Warning: there is some shipping, but very mild, and its a one-sided adolescent crush kind of thing (which ends up being hilarious). Can be found here as well as here, under the pen name Rowanoak23.
Synopsis: Scootaloo is ready to take her flight exam. She's going to end up discovering how the rainbows are made in Cloudsdale. Warning: grimdark as fuck. Contains scenes of violence and gore. Reader beware.
Synopsis: My life in Hollow Shades wasn't too bad, but I wanted to start a new life somewhere else, so one day I packed my things and movved to a town called Ponyville. A place where I could start a new life, make some friends and get a job. What I never expected was to find the mare of my dreams...
Comments: Better than it sounds. The author is a friend of Kalash93, who also served as his chief editor. Mythology gags abound.
Synopsis: Sixteen years after arriving in Ponyville, Twilight Sparkle is excited to have invented a brand-new kind of spell, but it will come with consequences she can’t possibly anticipate. Meanwhile, threats in shadows around the world conspire to overthrow the Solar Throne. With her world turned upside down, she will have to come to terms with the role that fate has dealt her while straining to keep Celestia in power.
Comment: Unlike a lot of Twilight Alicorn fics, her change is gradual in this one.
Synopsis: Twilight Sparkle has learned much about the magic of friendship, but what about love? In the aftermath of "A Canterlot Wedding", she begins her studies on romantic love. Life goes on in Ponyville, with Gilda coming to town with a business proposition, the Cutie Mark Crusaders embarking on a major new project, and Fluttershy starting up a romantic relationship of her very own.
Comments: A very fun and well-written story that's something of an AU as this was written before season three and four. The Characters are very much in character and with well-written dialogue with a little bit of cussing and a few sexual implications throughout, though sex is not the focus nor is it prominent. It’s in epic length, well over 200,000 words and two years in the making, with still more to come and like the show, it features both slice-of-life everyday activities and big heroic confrontations.
Additionally ships that are included are Fluttermac, Spike/Sweetie Belle, Twilight/OC, Lyra/Bon Bon, Twilight/Joe, Pinkie/Fancypants, Rainbow/Derpy, Celestia/Discord, Chrysalis/OC, and many more.
Synopsis: The story details Rarity's life as a serial killer, a life which stemmed back to a self-defense killing in her foalhood. While at first she relishes in her murders (mostly of weaker series antagonists) eventually she becomes a Woobie Destroyerof Worlds when she begins to hate herself for what she does and what effect is has on her family and friend but by then it is such an addiction for her that she can't stop herself.
WARNING this story is very violent and details each end every murder. However, the author stresses that it is a character study rather than only focusing on the gore and "isn't Cupcakes with Rarity". It's more tragedy than grimdark as less than half of the chapters contain violent murders. Still, if gore involving ponies isn't your thing DO NOT READ THIS STORY.
Synopsis: Rainbow Dash knows one thing for sure, she is definitely not a barbarous, uncivilized dolt who doesn't know polite conversation from a hippopotamus's rear end. And also that she's definitely not the one who's wrong. Rarity is wrong. Rainbow Dash is absolutely, totally, a hundred percent sure of it.But then why did Rainbow just buy a wagon load of apology bouquets?
Synopsis: An attempt to banish Celestia to another dimension also catches Twilight, Spike, and Luna. Now they're all stuck in another version of Equestria where Celestia became the evil Daymare Sun, and holds the world in eternal daytime, and Twilight's counterpart is her right hand mare. Twilight believes the only hope for this world is to find the counterparts of her friends and reassemble the Elements of Harmony, while Celestia and Luna make their own plans.
Synopsis: Big Macintosh goes on strike when he sees he's the one doing all the heavy lifting and harder work at Sweet Apple Acres while his sisters frolic. His idea catches fire throughout Ponyville, and soon every stallion is up in arms!
Synopsis: Story of the Blanks is a short fan-game created in Adobe Flash. The game is constrained to use genuine NES graphics and graphical limitations (down to the very 8 sprites per line limitation). Most if not all the music in the game was created by various people using FamiTracker (a NES/Famicom tracker).
The basic story: Applebloom, one afternoon, runs into Twilight, who is heading into the Everfree Forest to deliver something to Zecora. Once they get there, Zecora warns them to leave the forest as soon as possible, as something will happen that night that they should not stay to witness. As they leave, they encounter a road block that Twilight attempts to remove, but while doing so, Applebloom sees another filly head deeper into the forest, and follows her...
Synopsis: The background stallion Blues is given a background of his own: a story composed of the disappointment and heartache that flows through his saxophone, and the joy, friendship and love (and not just romance) that gave him and his music their character.
Synopsis: After Sweetie Belle is nearly killed in a Trixie-related mishap, she asks Twilight to teach her magic. Unfortunately, something goes wrong in one of their lessons and Twilight disappears, leaving Sweetie Belle to travel through the worlds of various AU fanfics to find her.
Synopsis: Princess Celestia is a living legend, but much of her life is shrouded in mystery. Records have long since been lost to the decay of time, and the tale of her triumph over Discord has become a fable. The Princess's memory of the event has long since faded... or has it? Her faithful student lending an eager ear, Celestia recounts the true story of a war-torn Equestria, the struggle against Discord, and the early years of her own life. Before she was the Princess of the Sun, she was merely a stranger.

Eventually, the two ponies forge an incredibly deep bond, and Ditzy experiences first-hand what it means to care for a true friend.
Synopsis: Josh Schwartz is a normal human with a normal life. He has his computer, his TV, his pet cat, his love of sports, the works. Naturally, he doesn't approve or enjoy girly things that are obviously made for girls. However, when a mysterious and unexplainable series of events takes place, he finds himself in Equestria, a world with no humans and only ponies...well, mostly ponies. How will this sarcastic human boy adapt to this new world? And how will its residents take to their new visitor?
Synopsis: The newly coronated Princess Twilight suffers an abrupt tragedy. Having lost two loved ones, she begins to question her own mortality, and that of her friends: AJ, Dash, Rarity, Pinkie, Fluttershy. And they are just the beginning. She can barely handle the pain of one funeral, let alone the thought of hundreds of them. Twilight finds a clever way to ensure all of her friends never die. They can’t all be ageless alicorns, but they can all move into Twilight’s Dollhouse. Then they can be best friends forever.
Synopsis: Twilight Sparkle prides herself on following and sticking to her plans, but she isn't as organized as everypony thinks. Her master list, the plan for her life, has an item that she has never been able to check off; and the time has come to fix that. How hard can it be? All she needs to do is go on a date and get a kiss.
Synopsis: A diplomatic crisis arises between Equestria and the small, poor kingdom of Tarandroland, ancestral home of the reindeer. Celestia and Luna agree that it is time Luna takes a more active hand in foreign relations again, and Luna brings Twilight with her as someone she actually trusts and can talk to.

Octavia quickly finds out her superior is slightly eccentric, leading their broadcast to be constantly derailed, yet somehow remain popular. These episodes were recorded for historical significance and transcribed. These are the Vinyl Scratch Tapes.
Synopsis: Words and actions can sometimes hurt more than we know, sowing betrayal and hatred where friendship and innocence lies. A single thoughtless action can be a tipping point, one fallen domino setting off hundreds. Look back, and answer me. What have you done? Completed, with a sequel promised by the author.
Comments: It is an Accusation Fic written about A Canterlot Wedding. But while most have the characters being called out by Twilight, in this fic, the events are altered, and the characters realize their mistake through the consequences of their actions. It is a powerful tale on how thoughtless mistakes can have long reaching effects most of us don't realize.
A sequel "Even As..." as been published by the author, and can be viewed here. Tropes for that story go on the same page as "What Have You Done."
Synopsis: Several days after having a terrible nightmare, Scootaloo takes her final exam at the Cloudsdale Flight Academy, and with the help of Rainbow Dash gains insight into the nature of her own character as well as knowledge of the deepest secrets of the Rainbow Factory.
Synopsis: Princess Luna approaches the Mane Six with some interesting questions: "Did you ever stop to wonder what became of Trixie, Gilda and Blueblood after your encounters? What did these episodes truly mean to you? What role will they yet play in the lives of the Elements of Harmony? Last, are these questions as relevant as the journey towards the answers? Who will benefit from seeking these answers - you, them, or I?"
Shipping: Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie, Twilight and Luna.
Synopsis: When a training expedition ends in complete disaster, a young changeling finds himself separated from the hive, and he has to seek shelter in a pony orphanage. As he grows, he finds himself divided between genuine affection for his equine friends and the need to deceive them to survive.
Comments: A beautiful and very poignant story, a true emotional rollercoaster. Set in the same continuity as the also excellent (but more light-hearted) Fragments. Each one's ending is a bit of a spoiler for the other's, so read in any order you want.
Synopsis: What if Rainbow Dash failed her Sonic Rainboom at the end of "Cutie Mark Chronicles"? Twilight awakes in a strange land where everything is a bit... different, and the world is shrouded in eternal night.
Synopsis: When Princess Twilight Sparkle's attempts to research the dimensional mirror hits a road block, she receives unexpected aid from her former rival Trixie, who has returned to Ponyville in the hopes of getting her life back on track. Although their experiment is a success, disaster strikes and the unicorn duo's magic potential is taken from them and spread among the alternate worlds. Together, Twilight and Trixie must now explore the multiverse to restore themselves.
Synopsis: Twilight's library is chock full of books. And her life along with all of her friends are about to be turned upside down. When she stumbles across a secret area in her library she never knew existed, she finds an old book along with a letter hidden in the pages. Now Twilight and her friends set out on a journey to find six more ponies who come from the country that neighbors Equestria from the East. Alamante. The land of elements and a place where everypony has a unique gift over one of the six elements of nature. Wind, fire, ice, plasma, water, and earth. Once found, Twilight, Fluttershy, Applejack, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie must learn to use the Elements of Harmony and combine them with the forces of the six Elements of Nature. Join up with Twilight and her gang along with Typhoon, Terra, Agua, Gem, Pyro, and Cryo as they work together to try and save Equestria from an evil force thought to be gone, and learn a friendship lesson none of them ever thought imaginable.
Synopsis: After the failed invasion, the orders were to hand any captured changeling to the Royal Guard for public execution. However, when a guard finds a small, seriously wounded one, he takes pity on the poor thing and decides to keep her as a prisoner in his own home instead. But, as changelings will starve without a steady intake of love, she has to show him just how cunning (and kinky) a changeling can be.
Comments: This is, right now, the top rated changeling story at Fimfiction. It is that good.
Synopsis: Rainbow Dash usually had her head in the clouds, but she always thought she knew up from down. When an incredible revelation sends her life into a tailspin, she finds herself at the mercy of emotions she never thought she had, faced with hard questions and impossible choices. What is the importance of family? Of bloodlines? Of sacrifice? What does it truly mean to be alicorn?
Comments: A sequel to Fairy-Slayer's MLP:FiM - Mommy Nearest, this fic, and its author, are just fantastic. The characterizations of the ponies remain incredibly true to the show, and the O Cs are well-crafted. The plot is interesting and gripping. The writing takes the cake, it is quite simply amazing. Aldea Donder took a weird, "out there" concept like Rainbow Dash being Celestia's daughter and makes it work. This fic is arguably better than the fic that inspired it, which itself is fairly good.
Synopsis: When a new pony stumbles into the town of Ponyville early one morning, it sets off a chain of events best described as another entry in the eternal struggle between Order and Chaos. Oh, and the Doctor shows up in some of the parts of All Good Things. Go figure.
Synopsis: When Applejack discovers that a thief has been stealing her prized apples, she looks for help in capturing the culprit. Fluttershy is eager to step in, but she's been acting very oddly of late...
Comments: It has a nice Original Flavour and plenty of laughs, with some great interactions between Fluttershy and Applejack, and a gripping finale. The chase scene at the beginning is particularly good fun to read.
Synopsis: There are three things that connect Fool's Gold, Short Fuse and Ambra together. First is that they do not have any money. Second is that they are idiots. The third is that the narrator does not care about them very much. Together, these three freelancers try to make it big in the district of immigrants, hooligans, vagrants and thugs of Canterlot: The Shangri-La District. And it all goes downhill from there.
Comments: An original story focusing on O Cs that looks at the seeder sides of Canterlot. Filled with zany humor and fun characters, it is worth following just to see what adventures the characters stumble into next.
Synopsis: A punk rocker stallion named Union Jack transfers from a school for criminals to Ponyville High School for a second chance at life after attempting to burn down the city he lived in.
Comments: The language is rather dry, but the characters are relatable and really feel like high school students trying to make it through all right. It's a good slice of life story, but the romances are a little rushed. Overall it's a pretty good story. I liked it, but YMMV.
Synopsis: On a bright day filled with birds and blue skies, an insane cult attempts to give Discord renewed freedom and a third chance at eternal chaos. But when the spell is interrupted by Luna, something unexpected is created. Now, an little brown earth colt named Dyx finds himself living under the care of Pinkie Pie, only to be mildly disturbed by memories and emotions from his past. Is the foal Discord reborn or is he simply a doppelganger with a soul and mind of his own? (Both) Can Pinkie Pie protect Dyx from those refuse to see past his yellow eyes and awesome magickalishfullness? (Yes.) Or will Dyx be forced to inherit the mistakes that may not even be his and once more become the greatest evil Equestria has ever known? Again? (Maybe. *sniff* Maybe.)
Comments: In case it wasn't obvious, this is a parody of the popular pony-fanfic "Past Sins".
Synopsis: Most of the time, Applejack is honest. A lot of times, she's a dependable pony. Then, sometimes, she's full of militant squirrels piloting her in a war with the Chipmunk Confederacy over a sacred acorn.
Comments: An absolutely hilarious one-shot (as of yet) where Applejack is kidnapped by Ditzy Genius rodents and replaced with a robotic shell piloted by a crew that thinks they're in Metal Gear Solid. Hilarious enough as is, but as it turns out, the crew has no freaking clue how to pretend to be Applejack, speaking in Large HamPurple Prose and regularly suffering Special Effect Failure as they keep on having to patch errors in the robot. Come for the comedy of the other Ponyville inhabitants trying to deal with the shell bumbling about, stay for the Super Robot cheese as the fight over the acorn heats up particularly when it turns out their rivals, the chipmunks, replaced Fluttershy.
Synopsis: An adaptation of the first two episodes into a hard science fiction setting, as the crew of a generational spaceship learns the horrible truth behind one of their old legends in the thousandth year of their voyage.
Synopsis: The challenge? Daunting. The reward? Worthy. Failure? Not an option. For Big Macintosh has accepted the bet, and thus begins A Ballad of Eeyup and Nope - in which he isn't allowed to say either.
Synopsis: Flamingo1986 (Zachary Rich) presents his ongoing storybook "My Little Pony: The Ballad of Mecha Pinkie Pie", where Pinkie Pie creates the ultimate party machine and the world of Equestria is changed forever.
Synopsis: Faithful knight of Celestia, Sir Spike de Draco leaves Canterlot with his young shieldmaiden Twilight Sparkle to embark upon a journey of stolen pony hearts, spontanious beard-sprouting, dozens of broken teeth and the smiting of evil left and right.
Comments: A nice affectionate send-up towards old Beowulf-like legends with overpowered heroes that fight for booze, babes, and glory, this fanfic is basically what happens if you take the manly Spike from his fantasies in A Dog and Pony Show and makes him the main character (with Twilight as the assistant). A hilariously manly story, you're sure to become as manly as Saxton Hale when you start reading it.
Synopsis: "Twilight seeks out the historical facts behind the bedtime story that was her favorite when she was a foal. She learns that the truths found in stories are sometimes more important than the facts."
Comments: Gives a heartwarming and epic backstory to Twilight and Cadance's "Sunshine, sunshine" rhyme.
Synopsis: "I want to see something good happen. After all, we're supposed to like these ponies. And what better opportunity is there than the Grand Galloping Gala? Does anyone else feel that our heroes got a rather raw deal? Princess Celestia telling them it's all okay went some way towards restoring the balance, but I don't think it went anyway near far enough. Here's my non-canon, but heartfelt extension to the story. With added Luna."
Synopsis: The show's broadcast schedule says that it's time for the Mane 6 to go to the Grand Galloping Gala.... again. Redoing the same episodes again and again over the summer rerun hiatus period has left everypony on edge, but Pinkie Pie keeps insisting that they keep going at it, less they face the wrath of the fans.
Comments: Interesting concept, funny moments, and some feels thrown in for good measure. It kinda makes you wonder as to what actually goes on in Equestria when the cameras aren't rolling.
Synopsis: When a neighboring country to Equestria, Saddellia, begins to encroach upon its borders and ponynapping Equestrians to serve as slaves, Princess Celestia entrusts the bearers of the Elements of Harmony to broker a peace treaty with its king. Along the way, Rainbow Dash ends up rescuing the Saddellian prince, who quickly becomes smitten with her. Hoping that this would lead to more favorable negotiations, the rest of the Mane 6 cultivate the prince's infatuation, which may lead to unforeseen consequences...
Comments: Still being written, this story has so far proved itself to be awesome. The ponies are in character, the O Cs genuinely interesting and developed, and the plot engaging. This is written by the same author of Dashes, Dots and Pegasus Spots, so if you enjoyed that fic, you will undoubtably enjoy this one.
Synopsis: Sequel to "Enter The League of Fanons" and the final installment of the not-so-epic series. The League of Fanons discover that everypony has been taken over by crazed fanon versions of themselves! * Pinkie's become her Cupcakes counterpart, Futtershy's become what she is in a grimdark fic, Twilight's gone Foe Yay on "The Great and Powerful Her Royal Highness Princess Trixie", Rainbow Dash is doing Applejack, Rarity's all over Tom, Trollestia has come to town, Scootaloo's a chicken, Berry Punch's drunk, Minuette's flying on a giant toothbrush, ponies were wearing socks, Bic Mac's Running Gag all over a sentient Smarty Pants, Princess Luna's leading a resistance movement, who has an abacus as first mate, etc. As the League struggles to restore normalcy to Equestria, the Legion of Gloom works from the shadows to enact their revenge on our heroes. Will Equestria fall to the madness? And what role does Tom play in all of this?
Currently up to three stories. Note that the second and third contain spoilers for the first, as well as shipping.
Blueblood Returns Synopsis: Prince Blueblood comes to Rarity to apologize for his deplorable behaviour and asks for a second chance. While Rarity is ecstatic, her friends (especially Spike) think he's up to no good.
Blueblood's Redemption Synopsis: Exposed for the arrogant jerk that he is and stripped of just about every privilege afforded to his station, Blueblood reflects back on his cloistered life and thinks about what might have been. With nothing left to lose and realizing that he has lived his entire life in a gilded cage, he clumsily attempts to adopt a new identity and run away. With him are his two duty-bound guard ponies, who try to show the prince the ropes of life outside his pampered upbringing and keep him safe, but are concerned that he has completely lost his mind, and soon they run into a certain Great and Powerful magician who is looking for a handsome assistant...
The Blueblood Conspiracy Synopsis: Blueblood and Trixie are living in the castle together, but they're not exactly getting along, and it's got the staff on edge. Princess Celestia summons Twilight Sparkle and her friends to Canterlot to help teach the two to overcome their pride and vanity and learn to live in harmony. But the complex machinations required to covertly teach Blueblood and Trixie the value of kindness, laughter, generosity, honesty, and loyalty mean things (and ponies) quickly get crazy.

Her perfect world is falling apart. And only one pony can help her. The only pony she could ever count on. But is she her friend anymore?
Warning: Fic contains empathy for a dislikable character. If you want to keep hating Diamond Tiara, then avoid this fic. Otherwise, read on.

Synopsis: MANE VI: Maneuver, Assess, Neutralize, Execute. Unit Six.
Despite their unique personalities, this motley squad of citizens and soldiers has proven themselves time and time again. They are the world's unseen special forces, doing their part for a vast, covert network, run by the enigmatic Cell. They have been dormant for a year, but they're about to meet someone new: Cell's personal protege, Twilight. After a new mission takes an unexpected turn for the worst, an unforeseen evil threatens to plunge the world into darkness. Against uncertain odds, Twilight must unite MANE VI and fight to restore Project Harmony, while realizing her place in this world along the way.
Notes: An experiment in FiM reinterpretation. Contains humanized, militarized characters in an alternate universe, set on a near-future Earth. Rated Teen for scenes of combat, violence, and potential swearing.
Synopsis: Concerned about the confidence of some of her students, Cheerilee enlists Rainbow Dash to take six children: Sweetie Belle, Silver Spoon, Snails, Dinky Doo, Pipsqueak and Archer on a week-long camping trip to Whitetail Woods. Rainbow enlists the aid of Big Macintosh as her co-chaperone as she tries to teach the young fillies and colts about camping, teamwork, confidence and how to get along and fend for themselves. They are so doomed.
Comments: A well-written fic with excellent characterizations that remain faithful to the show (with the exception of characters that have not been given a personality on the show, which leaves interpretation wide open). There is shipping, so be advised if that is not your thing or if the particular ship is not your preference. Can also be found here, under the pen name Rowanoak23.
Synopsis: After a performance mishap results in a member of the Blueblood family seeking deadly vengeance, Trixie needs to get out of Equestria for a while. She ends up signing on with an expedition heading into the frozen north beyond the Crystal Empire, where hopefully assassins won't follow. Their assignment? Capturing a live windigo. As it turns out, however, windigos are not the only things hiding in the north, and Trixie may not be as safe from her own problems as she thinks...
Comments: Well-written and enjoyable. Trixie is notably a very well-rounded and capable character here, and coming into her own without Twilight taking part.
Synopsis: Spike has been feeling lonely lately. Everyday he watches Twilight go off and have fun with her friends while he does the same thing: clean, and do chores. His luck seems to change though when he and Twilight find a flyer for a circus. With Twilight's friends, Spike goes to the circus with them. At the circus, Spike meets and befriends the circus performers and show him true love and friendship. Tired of being left out or not being loved by the others, Spike decides to leave Twilight and the others for his new friends. Will they get the baby dragon back?
Synopses: Spike, centuries after the passing of his friends tells the tale of a very special statue he has of a unicorn named Rarity. Millenia later, Spike, learning that his time is coming, begs a favor of Celestia: to pass on in the company of a friend whose time has also come...
Synopsis: Once, there was a little unicorn filly who always found herself unable to sleep and could only be comforted by the singing of a certain lullaby. Years later, Sweetie Belle attempts to reconnect with her older sister.
Comments: I don't usually get upset at fanfiction, but this one almost had me in tears. One of the best MLP fics I've read.
Synopsis: Caught in the middle of a struggle between Equestria and a neighboring country, Blueblood finds himself alone in unfriendly territory. Through trials and hardships he slowly begins to change into the prince that his country needs.
Comments: You've probably seen a lot of fics of Blueblood getting a Humiliation Conga that makes him see the error of his ways. But this is in a whole new level. With an interesting expansion of the Equestrian world, beautiful plot advancement, and more character development than you can shake a stick at (particularly on Blueblood's part), I consider this a must-read and won't say anything else so as to keep it unspoiled. Be warned, it's pretty dark.
Synopsis: "It's called 'Shh'," said Fluttershy. "It's a game about who can be quiet the longest. Sound fun? I'm the world champion." Fluttershy is not a pony who makes things up. She really is the world champion of "Shh," or The Quiet Game. And now it's time for her to defend her crown, with Twilight Sparkle and Rarity along for the ride.
Synopsis: The day after an adventure in the Ursa Major's cave Rarity starts feeling, different. The sun is painful, she can't eat anything, Opalescence is meaner than usual, and she hungers for the blood of other ponies.
Synopsis: Spike and Rarity have had rather successful lives, despite their relatively uncommon interspecies relationship. They have been together for quite some time, and have a happy, loving marriage. And marriage, as we all know, often gives rise to children. Neither a pony, nor a dragon, their daughter Crystal is having a rather difficult time making sense of herself. Ponyville's general contempt of her is not helping. Realizing this, Crystal begins to have doubts about her own identity, her existence. When she returns home to the Boutique one day, having just been involved in a nasty fight, Crystal and Rarity have a heart to heart about what makes somepony...well...somepony.
Synopsis: A group of terrorists known as the Shadowbolts are confronted with old grudges, past loves, and even their own morals as they set out to destroy the Wonderbolts and anypony who gets in their way
Synopsis: Name's Gilda. Ya know, me n Dash did some crazy stuff together at flight camp. But this one time, I wasn't so hot on Dash's little craving at lunch. Hey! Don't gimme that look! I didn't MAKE her do it!
Synopsis: When Rainbow Dash catches a bad case of pegapox, she cannot fly back to her cloud home and finds herself staying with Rarity and Sweetie Belle. Twilight is searching for a cure, but can the pegasus survive her well meaning nurses long enough to use it?
Synopsis: When Rainbow Dash's parents come to Ponyville, her friends learn that she might not be the pony they thought she was. Will Dash's secret drive her friends away from her, and will her parents still accept her?
Comments: Saying why this fanfiction is so amazing would involve spoiling the secret, which is unfortunate because this fic is oozing with real-world relevance and I recommend it to anyone dealing with this issue regardless of whether or not they're a MLP:FiM fan. Turns out Rainbow Dash is actually a stallion named Sonic Dash. Her parents refuse to acknowledge her female identity and insist that Sonic was just going through a phase that he should've grown out of by now. The rest of the mane cast's reactions vary (Fluttershy already knew, of course, and Rarity had figured it out on her own, but naturally Applejack takes it the worst due to the dishonesty involved). Truly an outstanding take on the struggle faced by those whose gender identity doesn't match their biological gender.
Synopsis: "December 21, 2012. This date has for long been synonymous with an oncoming apocalypse to which mankind itself and all of God's creatures will return to where they all came from to live in peace. What actually happened was an event almost nobody saw coming. In this journal, I aim to tell the story on what happened that day, and what happened since that day. Be forewarned, however, that not everything that is written in this log was peaceful."
Synopsis: Whilst enjoying the company of Twilight Sparkle and her friends in the doughnut shop immediately following the events of "The Best Night Ever", a disappointed Princess Celestia send a letter off to Prince Blueblood explaining the implications of his failure of the "Rarity Test", among other things...

Since she doesn't want to leave Derpy Hooves alone, she recruits the help of Lyra and Bon-Bon to keep her at Bay. Will they be able to prevent Derpy from eating the muffins? Or will Derpy have the last laugh?
Synopsis: Derpy Hooves has a daughter, a young unicorn named Dinky, who doesn't have an easy life at school because of her mother and starts hating Derpy for constantly shaming her, until one day she discovers her mom's motivations and learns a very important lesson...
Synopsis: Discord finds that the spell that turned him to stone wasn't quite thorough enough, and he can telepathically communicate with anypony he wants. He quickly sets to corrupting Scootaloo, and with her help assembles his own Elements of Disharmony.
Synopsis: Ditzy Doo tells her daughter a story about a windy day she experienced in Ponyville. The story is based on the Winnie the Pooh series by A. A. Milne, and contains numerous shout outs to them. It even has illustrations done in the style of E. H. Shepard (the original illustrator of Winnie-the-pooh).
Synopsis: Ditzy has trouble remembering her past, all she knows is that she arrived in Ponyville with a tiny foal. Colgate brings her to Doctor Whooves to try to recover her lost memories, but her past is nothing anypony was expecting, and soon it comes back to haunt her.
Comments: One of my favourite Derpy fics, it does get quite sad and terrifying, but I think the end makes up for it.

Synopsis: When Friendship is Magic fan site Equestria Daily announced a speedfic writing challenge, in which writers had two hours to complete a short story based on an arbitrarily-assigned theme (in this case, that Rainbow Dash needs to cook something but turns out to be a Lethal Chef), administrator Cereal Velocity never expected to be deluged with 145 entries. ("You ponies are full of words," said the dazed admin.)
Synopsis: The events of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic were all just the delusions of an insane young woman who has been in an institution for the past few years. Now Tara believes she has conquered these fantasies, but has she really?

Original universe with heavy inspiration from the Ace Combat games. Rated Teen for warfare, violence, and language.
Comments: A fantastic world with characters unfamiliar, but compelling. Excellently paced action and exceedingly deep lore in an alternate version of Equestria rife with political intrigue and a likeable mane cast.
Synopsis: This is the story of the end. This is the story of the death of Equestria. It is the story of the reign of her royal majesty, Princess Twilight Sparkle of the Fading Sun. The alicorn sisters are dead and Equestria has turned to Twilight Sparkle to guide it. However, just maintaining a dim sun a fraction as bright as her mentor's keeps the new princess near her limits. Years have passed and Twilight Sparkle is sure of only one thing. Equestria is dying.
Tags: Sad. Dark.
Comments: This story is a very new and very interesting take on the "Twilight becomes an alicorn" idea. Instead of her ascension being of happenstance or her distance ancestry or some such thing, it is from necessity. Also, instead of Equestria staying normal as a whole, everything is in a downward spiral, even with Twilight's help. War is on the horizon, ponies are threatened by the things that go 'bump' in the night, and the moon and stars haven't been seen for more than forty years.
Synopsis: While talking with Twilight at the market, Rarity realises that Twilight is in heat - and that Twilight has no idea what that means. Unsure of how to break it to her, Rarity "gathers" Applejack, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie, leading a hilarious and revealing discussion of how each of them learned about the facts of life, and how each of them deal with the symptoms... The kicker is that Twilight is completely aware of what her estrous cycle is, she'd just never heard it called "in heat" before.
Comments: Despite dealing with a topic that would be taboo for the TV show, the Mane Six are completely in character, to the point where you can believe this conversation might actually happen between episodes. Easily one of the funniest one-shots on Fimfiction.Net.
Synopsis: Pinkie Pie proposes a "We're Sorry" party to make it up to Zecora for how they treated her. When she and her friends finally meet the entertainment whom Pinkie hired sight unseen; they find they are giving their new friend a more playfully thrilling apologetic experience then anyone ever dreamed. (PG-13)
Synopsis: Celestia unexpectedly enters a state of Death like hibernation, and the resultant power vacuum between the naive Luna and a new Council leads to civil war. Not a happy tale but well written nonetheless.
Synopsis: After the disaster at the Grand Galloping Gala, Octavia's career is ruined. Upon learning that the Mane Six were not punished for ruining the Gala, and that the incident was relegated to a laugh in the newspaper, Octavia's life changes. She begins to pursue a path that has never been seen before in Canterlot, where concertos and rhapsodies give way to controversy and rebellion. A path where symphonies are composed not with instruments... but with spray paint.
Synopsis: After Rainbow Dash's rump meets lightning one time too many, she feels like her reputation in town is ruined as ponies start laughing at her misfortune. Her self-esteem in tatters and her loyalty waning, its up to her friends to help her.
Comments: An interesting story about Rainbow Dash's psychology, and the Inferiority Superiority Complex that lies at the heart of her bravado. While sad at times, the story is also heartwarming in that it shows the lengths to which the Mane Cast will go to support one of their number when they're in the dumps. Can also be found here, under the pen name Rowanoak23.
Synopsis: Deeply desiring a pet, Rainbow Dash adopts and tames a falcon, who she names Baron Awesome * I know,I know.. Hilarity Ensues, and heartstrings are tugged as pegasus and bird adjust to one another.

The needs of his store chain occupy his time, leaving little for anything else, including his daughter. When a cancelled meeting leaves him with a free day, he takes advantage of the opportunity to go shopping with his little girl.
Comments: It's nice adding a bit of depth to a character whose only purpose is to antagonize several viewpoint characters. Sure, she's still spoiled, superficial and mean, but her interactions with her father feel right.
Synopsis: Why can't unicorns use magic during Winter Wrap-Up? Applejack knows the answer, and with it comes the surprising truth about the origin of Ponyville, and the worst year in Equestria's history.
Synopsis: The so-called 'World Famous' Flim Flam Brothers, after being defeated by Applejack and her friends, decide that they just weren't cut out for the cider making business. Synopsis: Fluttershy's such a sweet, innocent, naive little pony. She's probably never even looked at a stallion! ...so why is her butt plastered all over the front of the DVD case Pinkie Pie just found? Surely there's a good explanation for this, our heroes just have to figure out what it is. There's no way Fluttershy's actually a porn star. ...right?
Comments: As with Estrus, Friendly Uncle deals with a taboo subject in a way that a) keeps everyone in-character, and b) is flatout hilarious.
Synopsis: When the mane six go to see a Wonderbolt's show in Canterlot, Fluttershy decides to not go as crowds of that size make her too nervous. So, Princess Celestia decides to spend the day with her instead while her friends are away. The two decide to play a few simple games of chess to pass the time...
Synopsis: After an unfortunate incident involving Rainbow Dash and herbal tea, Fluttershy wakes up one morning to discover that she has turned into a rabbit! With her friends unaware of her plight, Fluttershy must turn to Angel bunny to guide her on her quest to restore her original form. In the process, she is given the oppurtunity to experience everyday life in Ponyville from a whole ... new perspective, and discovers that there is much more to her friends' pets than she ever expected.
Comments: This is just great. The interactions, the conflict, the story. Okay, the story isn't much new, but it give's it that originality that we've come to know so much. And by the interactions between Angel and Fluttershy shows that, once and for all, despite outwardly apperances, he really does care for the filly that's raised him as her own. Throw in some hilarity ensuing and you've got yourself a real dandy (in a good way.) Plus, Angel speaking in a Brooklyn accent. Need I say more?

Synopsis: Tragedy today as the First and National was attacked—assaulted by a group of masked madwomen in what’s being termed a ‘hurricane of murder and insanity.’ Dozens dead and even more wounded, with tens of thousands of dollars worth of collateral all that remains. The police are completely baffled, with no leads, no suspects—nothing but funeral after funeral and an unhappy government looking for anyone to blame and anyone to charge for this heinous crime. The biggest question on the minds of the citizens is: Why? Years of peace, broken and shattered, now lying in a crumpled, bloodied mess...and for what? Money? This anchor has never been so disgusted in his many years of news reporting.
Comments: Imagine Heat. Imagine Reservoir Dogs. Imagine any of the scores from GTA V. Then take that cinematic punch and flair and marry it to Friendship is Magic for a heist that, believe it or not, is going to a worthy cause. The writing is solid, and the action is great. The highlights in the characterization are illustrated throug the action and the dialogue is on point. And the last character anyone would expect to ends up sniping a chopper out of the sky. 10/10

When he accepts her challenge to create an artistic masterpiece, will he win her heart, or learn a terrible lesson in the nature of beauty and love? Warning: Dark.
Notes: This is a beautiful and tragic story about a pony's love for a mare and his growing obsession to win her heart. Fair warning, The ending is not happy and Rarity is slightly OOC, but still a very tastefully done story.

Balancing her studies and putting up with her hard-partying pegasus sister is enough to keep Luna up most nights with little or no social life to speak of. Which is just as well, because she keeps having the strangest dreams about a life she half-remembers; a life of long nights spent as Princess of the Moon and a terrible catastrophe that befell her kingdom. But those are just dreams...right? With the fate of Equestria resting on her shoulders, Luna must unite a group of unlikely allies to stop Tirek, save the world, and solve the riddle of her nightmares before they come to life.
Synopsis: It seemed like a simple problem, at first, but as dangerous foreigners begin to hunt for Twilight, and ancient godlike entities begin to stir as she and her friends search for a solution, a tiny growth-spurt in her horn suddenly doesn't seem so simple. Warning: GRIMDARK at times.

Yet the stakes are higher than anyone knows, for in her research Twilight Sparkle discovered a dark secret about the Elements, something that will shake the foundations of the world.
Comments: This fic is just fantastic. When it comes to canon characters, characterization is spot-on and faithful to the show. The OCs are, incredibly, as interesting and well-developed as the canon characters. The plot is incredibly entertaining and well-constructed, the pacing is excellent, the mysteries gripping. Prose, grammar, and the "mechanical" aspects of writing are near perfect. If you have the time, I recommend a reading binge. The author generally updates every two weeks, with occasional, relatively short hiatuses when busy with real life, and when Sharaloth does update, the updates range between 8000 and 20000 words.
Synopsis When Twilight and her friends are snowed into the library, they discover a book she doesn't recognize. It turns out, the story they find within hits much closer to home than they had expected.
Synopsis: It is the responsibility of a king to care for his people and maintain order in his kingdom. That shouldn’t be much trouble for a ruler as powerful as Discord, right? However, the ponies want nothing to do with their frightening new ruler, and the unamused Spirits of Equestria aim to drag the Spirit of Chaos away before he can cause any more harm. Warnings: major and minor character death, occasional violence
Synopsis: Princess Celestia struggles to distinguish reality from illusion as Discord begins to seep into her brain. But... isn't Discord still imprisoned in stone?
Comments: This very, very dark fic takes an interesting twist on the complex relationship between Discord and Celestia (in case you're wondering: no, they are not lovers in this one). The writing and the characterization are excellently done (it features some well-made O Cs as well), and instead of being a cheap gorefest, it relies heavily on psychological horror, managing to be genuinely scary. Be warned though: it's a darkfic, and an extremely sad one at that.
Synopsis: When eating their lunches, an interesting group of girls comes into the cafeteria and hypnotize the entire school with their siren song. It doesn't affect Rarity, but her attention is drawn towards something else about the lead singer. Her hips.

Synopsis: These are the final thoughts of a young soldier mortally wounded in action.
Comments: Kalash has done it again with this Tear Jerker of a fic. My Little Dashie doesn't hold a candle to this. And when it's not making you cry, it's world building, developing character, or just being really badass. One of the best war stories in the fandom. Absolute must read, and it's not terribly long either, making it a good quick read.
Synopsis: Luna finds the diary of a guard who loved her, even unto death. Now she has to deal with the sweet reality that she can both love and be loved, and with the bitter reality that she cannot truly be with anypony she loves.
Synposis: In the elite circles of Canterlot, cultured music is one of the essential luxuries for anypony with status. Octavia Philharmonica is one of the foremost classical musicians in Canterlot. Her music is at the very pinnacle of her profession, her performances highly sought after, and her talents attract a steady string of wealthy and influential patrons. Her talent, however, is not always enough on its own; occasionally, her job demands more. For the sake of pleasing one of her patrons, she must perform for a charity concert—a collaborative concert with her dubstep-loving friend Vinyl Scratch.
Comments: Yes, the story sets up the obvious antagonist and then has them briefly thinking each other is the saboteur long before they realize who, but you may well enjoy the ride, anyway.
Synopsis: The sequel to The Things we Leave Behind. After years of work, Rainbow Dash has finally achieved her lifelong goal of joining the Wonderbolts. Reluctantly, Dash and Fluttershy delve into a tale. A tale of a young Fluttershy's amazement at the world she had landed upon, and a filly Dash's desperate quest to save her from that most evil of places: THE GROUND.
Comments: A really sweet and funny fic examining the beginning of Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy's friendship. Can also be found on Equestria Daily. They've tagged it with "Silly Fillies". They're not wrong.
Synopsis: The mysterious country of Marecedonia prepares to wage war against Equestria and the Elements of Harmony are needed. Twilight Sparkle and her friends are tasked with stopping the oncoming war between the two countries. However, an old foe is well aware of the Elements and will stop at nothing to stop them.
Comments: An excellent fanfic from an new author. Everypony's characterization is spot-on with canon and the OC ponies mesh well without dominating the other characters. While it is dark, it does not cross into pure grimdarkness and manages to retain some of the show's light and innocence. A great addition to the MLP fanfiction library.

Comments: By far one of the most underrated fanfics out there, this roller coaster is one of the purest expressions of emotion in the fanbase. Well worth the read.
Synopsis: In need of work, Lyra and Bon Bon find employment in Ponyville's only cryobank; better known as a sperm bank. Under the supervision of Nurse Coldheart, the two mares apply themselves to the high calling of protecting the ponies of future generations...and cleaning up any spills.
Notes: I've chosen to embrace the Mature rating for this story. Most chapters are technically Teen rated, but there is one mature chapter, which is clearly marked. While the setting takes place in a cryobank, the story will follow Lyra and Bon Bon's perspective. The actual method for acquiring samples will only be alluded to; never described.
Synopsis: A collection of brief ficlets and light-hearted one-shots based around the Infinite Loops concept originally from TFF. Contains notable scenes such as the redemption of Diamond Tiara, a Metal Wolf Chaos crossover, Pinkie Pie replacing Slaanesh, and a ton of other things that only makes sense in context. Also contains a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming in chapter 6 when the Mane Six finally get in touch with the creators of MLP. Highly recommended.

But as she's about to learn, you can't run from your past forever, and sometimes even the bad experiences may help change you for the better. A look into what made Rainbow Dash the mare she is today, and an indirect sequel to That Warm Feeling. (Though, you don't have to have read it first to read this one.)
Comments: A well-written, heartwarming, tearjerking story with fantastic characterizations and character motivations. Thoroughly recommend.
Synopsis: When Scootaloo wonders why Rainbow Dash has been avoiding her, Dash decides to tell a story from her youth, about friendship gained, and friendship changed, in order to explain why seeing Scootaloo has been making her sad.

Can her friends stage an intervention before she humiliates herself (and them) at a prestigious literature recital? No. No, they cannot.
Comments: One of the best examples of cringe-humor I've ever seen. If only the human body can somehow produce tears of joy and pain at the same time, for this story would totally make it rain up in here. Also featured in Equestria Daily.
Synopsis: Tabloid reporter Ink Well arrives in Ponyville to do a story about the chaos at the Grand Galloping Gala. But now they're closing in on one of the favorite holidays of the fall season, Nightmare Night—- which Nyx has never heard of and knows absolutely nothing about....
Synopsis: The Elements of Harmony are defeated and Nightmare Moon stands on Equestria's throne as their new Queen. Is Equestria doomed to suffer through night time eternal or will they be... perfectly fine? Twilight finds her new job as slave or "personal assistant" to her new ruler to be a bit maddening. But is this evil sarcastic queen really as bad as she originally believed? And just how many others are diabolical enough to cash in on the change in staff? Can Nightmare truly run a peaceful Equestria? Only one way to find out.
Synopsis: Twilight Soulshard, Lich Queen of the Edeathstria, an alternate, spooky themed version of Equestria, grows tired of her monotonous life of leading her ghoulish kin in Nightmare Night festivities every year, and opts to journey to the 'real' Equestria in order to find out how mortals have fun. Little does she know this will kick off an incredible journey of self-discovery... when she opts to take the real Twilight's place. — A parody of The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Synopsis: Civil war broke out in Equestria a few months ago. This means that there's a whole new sector of the economy catering to soldiers and their needs. Factories are mass-producing weapons and armor, alcohol sales are up, and even the brothels are seeing increased profits. Browning Vineyard runs the Off-Duty Bar and Grill, a popular spot for the Joint Special Forces unit stationed at Fort Jack. He's seen a lot of beat-up soldiers walk through his doors, and he hasn't heard a lot of happy stories from them. Soldiers are becoming the rule rather than the exception. Which only makes tonight's visitor all the more confusing...
Synopsis: Equestria, formally neutral in a war between the Crystal Empire and the Darkwoods Confederation, is forced to enter upon the seemingly permanent poison-induced coma of Princess Celestia. However, the rest of the world may not be far behind...
Synopsis: When a harrowed Griffin crash-lands on Celestia's balcony, she appoints Twilight and her friends to be his protectors from the evil creature chasing him. But, when the beast appears, it claims itself to be a law-enforcer from another world, and the Griffin to be a dangerous dimension-hopping sorcerer in disguise. So, with the Griffin and the monster under the watch of Twilight Sparkle and Shining Armor respectively, the ponies must learn about their charges and discover the truth, whatever it may be.
Synopsis: What if Nightmare Moon had won? When a teleportation spell goes awry, Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow Dash are transported to a realm of eternal night, ruled by the cold, iron hoof of Nightmare Moon.
Synopsis: The Mane Five had a definite plan for revealing who was behind Mare Do Well: a surprise party! And just because Rainbow Dash forced the reveal a little early doesn't mean they can't all have cake!
Synopsis: For what is ostensibly the most terrifying time in her entire life, Octavia forgets how to play her beloved cello. Shenanigans ensue, and Lyra reluctantly helps to pick up the pieces, with the help of our favorite DJ, Vinyl Scratch!
Synopsis: After years of trying, Scootaloo finally discovers her special talent. It's the worst thing that ever happened to her. She'll have to leave Rainbow Dash and all her friends behind as she's forced to go off and learn about her new talent... and then it gets worse. (WARNING: It has a happy ending for Scootaloo, but there is Scootabuse.)
Synopsis: Lyra makes a big splash in Equestria when she gets her new animated series for children on the worlds No.1 network. The show in question: Only Human, which centers around a group of these mythical creatures called 'humans', straight from Lyra's imagination, who become friends as they overcome life's obstacles together.
Synopsis: The official sequel to Rainbow Factory. Set 20 years after the events of the original story, the Cloudsdale Weather Corporation has grown to nearly triple the size that it was in Rainbow Factory with the original factory room having been shut down after the events with Scootaloo. Despite that, two foals manage to avoid being processed and they find themselves trying to escape from the bowels of the factory while an even crazier Rainbow Dash and her workers try to re-capture them to keep the glory of The Flock.
Synopsis: The main character, Shady Blossom, is a thestral (bat pony) who is Babs Seed's stepmother. It starts off pretending to be a slice of life family fic, then hits you over the head with a frying pan. Shady's past turns out to be not only important, but different than what she thinks it is.
Synopsis: A parody fic: Twilight wanders through what has become a typical day for her...at least as far as fanfics are concerned. She blithely strolls through an absolute Cliché Storm, utterly unfazed by any of it at this point.
Synopsis: "A thousand years ago Princess Celestia sealed away Nightmare Moon using the Elements of Harmony. Now the Cutie Mark Crusaders will awaken a threat imprisoned for all that time, and all of Equestria will learn which is greater: The Elements of Harmony or the Elements of Discord."
Synopsis: In an unknown new world filled with mysterious and unexplored dangerous ruins, the story follows Sketch and Kickbolt, two explorers, as they slowly but surely uncover the history explaining what happened in this world. And more importantly, why the pony folk suddenly was brought to it just a little over a century ago.
Synopsis: The eccentric pink party pony, Pinkie Pie, plays detective with her lowly loyal assistant, Twilight Sparkle, solving crimes and having a good old time. From thieves, to missing ponies, stolen cutie marks, and insidious plots, there will be nothing Pinkie can't handle!
Synopsis: Pinkie Pie throws excellent parties. This is a fact of life, like Fluttershy being rather demure, or Rarity having a sense of style. But the fact is, Pinkie's parties cost bits, and her job at the bakery isn't supporting her passions anymore. So she dusts off her degree and opens a side business...
Comments: This fic deals with several more adultish themes, and yet manages to maintain a level of Original Flavor. Pinkie Pie as a psychologest (and yes, she deliberately misspells the word) is surprisingly effective. And entertaining, mustn't forget entertaining.
Synopsis: Midnight is a stallion who has long nursed a soft spot for Fluttershy. One night, Fluttershy invites him over to her place to talk. What follows is a wonderful night of passionate love.
Comments: Don't let the clop get you down. This is a Kalash 93 story. The characterization is wonderful, the story is heartmeltingly sweet, the sex is masterfully written, and there's even some world building and a bit of genuine real life sex advice. The sex is more intimate that lurid. May cause diabetes.
Synopsis: Exactly What It Says on the Tin, the ponies discover /co/, and end up being a bit upset/affected by what they see. To make matters worse, they have to go on a diplomatic mission, which quickly turns into the camping trip from hell, whilst they struggle with people's perceptions of them, and everything going wrong.
Synopsis: Enigma is a new arrival to Ponyville, but after she goes to sleep each day, she's forced to re-live that day all over again, and nopony can see her or interact with her in any way. After the day is re-lived, she wakes up where she'd been before she had to re-live her day, but as if she'd never been there.
Comments: While there are obvious if unintentional parallels with Background Pony, the specifics are sufficiently different that the story is interesting in its own right.
Synopsis: After the disaster of meeting Prince Blueblood, Rarity is done looking for the special pony to be her prince. So she decides to put her sewing skills to good use and make the perfect one of her own design.
Synopsis: Rainbow Dash is just awful at cooking, but the only thing worse than her cooking is the memories it conjures up.
Comments: Part of the Equestria Daily Speedfic Challenge on how Rainbow Dash can't cook. An incredibly well-written story. Also, be warned, unlike many of the other entries in this challenge, it is also very sad. As one commentator put it: "Wow. I'm not usually much for sad pony stories, but that was really, really well done. It's hard to believe it's the product of just two hours' work! EDITING: - (but read it anyway, it's seriously well-done)"
Synopsis: WANTED: The newly crowned Princess Twilight Sparkle has set up a bold new initiative to discover new magic, and is sending out an open call to the unicorns of Equestria to apply for her research team. No experience in magical theory or research necessary. Enthusiasm and out-of-the-box thinking a must. The Equestrian government is not responsible for any physical, emotional, or magical trauma experienced during the course of the project or the application process.
Note: Contains Twilight/Lyra shipping, and there is a Romance tag up, but not enough of a focus on it for the Shipping page just yet.
Synopsis: At the suggestion of one of her guards, Princess Celestia gets a cell phone to make contacting her easier. Needless to say, access to text messaging also leads to the phone being used for other things...
Synopsis: Twilight Sparkle has walked the wastelands for a very long time, but now, at last, he has reached the end of his journey. He only hopes now that the gods will listen to his prayers, and finally allow him a good place to die.
Comments: No that's not a mistake in the synopsis. An after the end fic done in a very Fi M manner.
Synopsis: A Choose Your Own Adventure starring Carrot Top. When Apple Bloom goes missing at the hands of a band of mischievous creatures, it's up to you to try and save her, along with the help of the other members of Ponyville if you so choose. Plenty of choices to make and 18 varying endings.
Synopsis: When Rainbow Dash is given the chance to impress one of her idols, she finds herself in the middle of a money problem. Can she count on her friends to help her make it in the big leagues? Will her friends still be able to count on her once she gets there?
Synopsis: When the Cutie Mark Crusaders find a book telling of an ancient artifact with the power to grant one's heart's desire, it leads them on their biggest adventure ever - and quite possibly their last!
Synopsis: "Make a wish." Rainbow Dash is granted an opportunity which seems false. But does that mean the wish was imagined? And whose wish is actually granted? "You cannot hope to beat me, dear Princess. Your Harmony lies broken!"
Comments: A wonderfully written fic. The author's descriptions and prose is just beautiful. The characters are excellently written and well within character. Also featured on Equestria Daily. Now, also at FIMFiction.net.
Synopsis: When a freak reading accident causes Twilight to be admitted to the Ponyville hospital, Rainbow Dash is right by her side. Compelled by a sense of duty and repayment, she takes it upon herself to cheer up her friend.
Comments: This story is one long Heartwarming Moment, with a good dose of funny as well. Rainbow Dash loyally repaying Twilight Sparkle for helping her learn the wonder of reading really fits her character. Also featured on Equestria Daily.
Synopsis: This is... my explanation of what REALLY happened. I mean, 1000 years before episode one, they had light and cities. Why wouldn't there have been plenty of ponies out in the dark? And why banish her for 1000 years? Doesn't that seem extreme? So many people say Celestia is a "troll" for this when in reality there was no other way. More than anything, I am doing this comic series to defend Celestia who is probably the greatest pony who has ever lived in Equestria and it breaks my heart the way people treat her sometimes. Now it's time to find out the REAL story behind the legend of the elements of harmony (I just hope I can do it justice with my current level of skill!)
Synopsis: Two lovers find time for each other to reaffirm their love. Better than it sounds.
Comments: If erotica could be an art form, then this would be a stellar example. The whole thing is thoroughly heartwarming and heavily atmospheric. It's a short piece, too, but it packs so much emotional content into its length. Must read!
Synopsis: Sometimes things happen that no one can control. When this happens to Equestria, Twilight and her friends sit alone on top of a hill on the outskirts of the burning city behind them, talking about the good times they've shared as friends, dwelling deeper into their friendship. With only so little time, only so few words can be mustered by the group except when they remember the good days.
Warning: You may need a box of tissues afterwards. This is a Tear Jerker.
Synopsis: All of Equestria is united in celebration for the return of their beloved Princess Nightmare Moon. But when Celestia and everypony else recieve her she's skeletally starved, filthy, and very nearly dead. It's up to everypony to do their part to help the dark alicorn, or Equestria may only have one Princess after all. 1,000 years is a long time to be alone on the moon. Alternate Universe, there never was a Luna
Comments: A very unique take on the return of Nightmare Moon.
Synopsis: My lord. For two thousands years you've waited, you've watched this world change in the depths of your prison; waiting for the day that you would returned to consume it. And now the world is at a crippled state. The eldest Alicorn sister rules over the land, unaware that her 'golden age' is what has kept this world off balance, and keeping your resurrection alive. But the one who had imprisoned you has sent forth the child of your first victims, to restore the world in its rightful path. But what can the Draconequus do, when the harmony he created turns against him? Concord is the spirit of order and balance. In a time when Equestria was ruled under chaos. Concord did a great deed for the ponies of the land. But in his ignorance and prideful state, he had unbalanced the world that he himself was sworn to protect. After a thousand years, Concord travels back to Equestria, determined to make things right again. However, it my be much more difficult than anticipated. If betraying friends, and destroying lives is what it'll take to balance the world, can he truly do it? Or will he embrace the dark side he never knew he had?
Alternate Synopsis: Many stories tell of a world that is in need of a hero. But what if the world needed a villain? Concord, the spirit of order and balance, must do the difficult job of becoming that villain.
Pairing(s): Celestia/OC onesided. (not a romance fic, but has some romantic elements)
Synopsis: It’s one misadventure after another for Pinkie Pie and Rarity as they hoof it home. They'll throw down with angry locals, empty stomachs, tourist traps, and the largest confection this side of Equestria. It's not just a question of can make it home. Can they do it together?
Comments: A hilarious little fic that picks up where "The Last Roundup" left off, with Rarity and Pinkie Pie lost in the middle of the desert trying to make their way back to Ponyville, and which pays homage to classic comedy duo films, like Crosby and Hope's Road movies.
Synopsis: The Cutie Mark Crusaders attempt some crusading when the Mane 6 leave on holiday. With about the level of success you're probably expecting. Don't worry, no character death takes place at all.
Synopsis: Working as a waiter at Canterlot's various social gatherings is a nice job. Especially since you began chatting with the cello player of the usual quartet, Octavia. You've gotten to know a lot about her, but one night there seems to be something on her mind. You offer her a drink to ease her nerves and you bring your glasses together in cheers. Next thing you know, you wake up in a strange hotel room in a town you've never been to next to a certain gray mare.
Synopsis: While Twilight, Rarity, and Fluttershy are at dinner together at a fancy resturaunt, they have an encounter with two mares that use to be Twilight's schoolmates at Celestia's School For Gifted Unicorns. Surprised and disturbed by Twilight's hostile reaction to them, Rarity delves into Twilight's past to find that the cheerful bookworm has more emotional pain in her past then one might think
Comment: A rather emotional trip for the reader that explores the very strong possibility that Twilight was bullied as a filly, this story reveals the pain of Twilight's past and shows her struggling with her issues in the present, with hope for the future. Bully victims will easily relate to Twilight here and find comfort in the role Twilight's friends play. As an added stroke, the author handles the punishment of the bullies very well with a good moral lesson to boot.
Synopsis: The autumn is coming, and our favorite bipedal unicorn, Lyra, is preparing for the big event of the season - the Running of the Leaves! But how is Bon-Bon going to take it? And can Lyra's body take the bipedal cross-country race? Only one way to find out!

Luna's School for Disadvantaged Youngsters will never be the same! Now has its own School Daze page.

Meanwhile, the Stallion Lickity Split is developing feelings for Pinkie's darker half, and the Royal Sisters do NOT like Pinkamina messing with fate.
Synopsis: "Her parents hadn’t come close to telling us what had happened. As I read her newest letter I couldn't believe what she was telling me. This kid hadn’t 'had an accident'… this kid, damn, this kid had been buckin' broken... she’d been broken…"
Comments: It is fantastic enough to merit its own entry on this page. Be warned, a bit of a Tear Jerker. Also featured at Equestria Daily.
Synopsis: With a magic exam coming up, Twilight has been staying up way too late and stressing herself too much. As a result, she starts casting spells in her sleep, causing all sorts of chaos. Spike, tired of being turned into random items and worried about his friend, tries to do something to help. Unfortunately, his attempts to help Twilight may end up causing more harm than ... good.

''Synopsis: War has broken out between zebras and ponies. A young pony soldier is standing guard at her post with a comrade when she is confronted with an impossible choice concerning a captured zebra fighter.
Comments: This story is DARK! It's one of the most frank, unflinching, war stories in the fandom. This is an awesome example of War Is Hell with a shocking Tear Jerker ending. Given who the author is, it should come as no surprise that the characterization and world building are excellent.
Synopsis: An ancient, storied evil arrives in Equestria, and joins Fluttershy's menagerie, as a baby dragon.
Will the Mane 6 Discover it in time?
Will they recognize the evil when they see it? Or can it avoid the temptation to succumb to his previous nature?
Will a brave knight challenge this evil with courage and the power of friendship? Helping him face the terror of the memories of his death? Crossover, but that would give it away. One Chapter one-shot.
Synopsis: "A lovestruck knight in Equestria's early days, unconvinced of his own worthiness, decides that he must prove himself to the mare he loves. With Princess Cadence as his guide, he is put on a quest by the Crown to go forth and right wrongs and ease sorrows associated with latent Chaos, all while learning of the Elements of Harmony from the ponies' companion races."
Comments: Written almost entirely in iambic pentameter. Yes really.
Synopsis: After the changelings' failed invasion of Canterlot, Twilight tries to soothe some of Ponyville's rampant paranoia by casting a spell to prove there are no imposters hiding in the town. But her spell leaves her in an alien body, facing a mob of angry ponies who just don't believe her when she says she is Twilight Sparkle. Or, at least, she was Twilight Sparkle.
Synopsis: One thousand years after her banishment, Princess Luna returns to a flooded world - with her sister nowhere to be found. Yet with the help of the Equestrian Remnant's valiant airship, the Nocturnal Thunder, and an alternate Mane Six, she may soon find answers at the edge of this strange, oceanic realm...
Comments: A charming epic in the make who's lead author, Silent Bob, is the same responsible for The Nightmare Before Nighmare Night.
Synopsis: When a fire breaks out in Everfree forest by unknown means, it's up to Zecora to warn Ponyville. But when she finds out that the Elements of Harmony that everypony tends to rely on are gone on vacation, can she rally the citizens of Ponyville to help put the fire out before the monsters of the forest overrun the city? Twilight Sparkle is overseeing preparations yet again, and has meticulously planned every last detail to ensure that everything is perfect for her mentor’s arrival. Nothing is going to wrong. Except when the big day comes, Twilight has gotten four hours of sleep and Fluttershy is nowhere to be found. Pinkie Pie sets off after her with nothing but a dark coat and the voice of a chain-smoking stallion, and the Apples and the Carrots are at each other’s throats while Rainbow Dash is attempting to fill in for Fluttershy. As her plans collapse around her and Ponyville descends into chaos, Twilight Sparkle must focus on obtaining the one thing that can make everything better: the all-powerful, awe-inspiring magic of caffeine.
Synopsis: A strange creature has wandered into town and ends up on Applejack's farm. AJ is not pleased but so many unanswered questions about him cause her to be curious. The dragon seems to have no family but the residents of Ponyville soon discover a link between the creature and the towns librarian.
Synopsis: A terse recounting of the thousand-year period between Luna's corruption and eventual return, in the form of relevant statistics. Thoroughly drives home Celestia's anguish, regret and suffering over what she was forced to do, and what she did to amend. Expect tears when reading.
Synopsis: Pinkie Pie has been acting super-extra Pinkie-like the last few days and it's really starting to bug Rainbow Dash. After Pinkie shows up in Rainbow's house while she's brushing her teeth Rainbow decides that enough is enough. Rainbow presses Pinkie for a straight answer until she gets one. And boy does she get one.
Synopsis: Princess Celestia is a living legend, but much of her life is shrouded in mystery. Records have long since been lost to the decay of time, and the tale of her triumph over Discord has become a fable. The Princess's memory of the event has long since faded... or has it? Before she was the Princess of the Sun, she was merely a stranger.
Synopsis: Sequel to Hiatus (above). Spurred on by her sister, Luna decides to open a summer camp dedicated to the arts and sciences in an attempt to become further involved with the daily lives of Equestria's citizens, hopefully improving her reputation in the process. The campers that sign up prove to be more than what the Princess of the Night was expecting, however. 'Camp Counselor' certainly wasn't supposed to be part of the royal duties.
Synopsis: Twilight Sparkle takes a moment from her studies at the School for Gifted Unicorns to get a late lunch. Finding herself in a strange part of the school grounds, an apple tree and its odd fruit tempts her appetite. Immediately after eating it, Twilight starts sneezing periodically, each time triggering various random effects that hinder her efforts to get back to her room unnoticed.
Comments: While not especially original, this well-written one-shot is funny while it lasts and portrays Twilight, Spike and Celestia quite accurately.
Synopsis: Bon-Bon is having trouble coming up with new candy flavors, something much more serious than it sounds like, and bringing a great deal of trouble both to her and her friend Lyra. Light-hearted.
Synopsis: Princess Celestia tires of constantly being surrounded by decorum, deference, and formality, and decides to take a day off from being Princess. But visiting Ponyville incognito is harder than she expects. Will she be able to fit in and make friends without blowing her cover?
Synopsis: Suri Polomare, disheartened by her failures in Manehattan, steals a time machine from Doctor Whooves and travels through time, taking credit for the lightbulb, the printing press and the universe.
Comments: Exactly what it says. It's a short but outrageous and hilarious story that still manages to have Suri lose at the end. Gold star.
Synopsis: Sometimes, bad things happen to good ponies. A year following a tragic incident, Twilight Sparkle returns to Ponyville to visit what she has been missing - her town, her memories, and most importantly, her friends. But will everything be as she remembers it?
Synopsis: Fan comic. Not long after the events of Hearth's Warming Eve, retired Royal Wizard Star Swirl the Bearded sets off to explore the newly-discovered land of Equestria. He doesn't get far before he finds, sleeping in the undergrowth, two little alicorns named Luna and Celestia.
Comments: Barely started, but shows a lot of potential.
Synopsis: Pinkie Pie has always served admirably as the Element of Laughter, and it's time for the princesses to show their appreciation. In fact, they have a special assignment for her, something they've never tried. It will be the best surprise she ever had.
Synopsis: On the show, we only get to see what happens through the Mane Cast's perspective. However, what about the background and secondary characters? Don't they get their shine in the spotlight as well? Well, now they do! Watch (or read) as scenes from the hit TV show is played in a whole different perspective as they are seen, through another's eyes.
Synopsis: A single changeling is blamed for the failed invasion of Canterlot, and literally kicked out of the hive. Fortunately he lands near a pony settlement, ripe for feeding. Now what's a lost and alone changeling, too starved to change his appearance and forced to rely on an old cloak for disguise, supposed to do to survive in a town where the dreaded Elements of Harmony walk the streets?
Synopsis: A magical accident transports Applejack to a strange version of Ponyville; one where earth ponies are oppressed and she's a wanted fugitive. AJ has to figure out how to survive a world that's both strange and familiar while searching for a way home.
Synopsis: What do you get when you combine a musical uncle and a curious colt? You get this brief, happy tale about music, memory, family, and self-discovery at the cusp of adolescence.
Short, sweet, and heartwarming in so many ways, with just a touch of comedy and world building. This touching piece reads like something from a memoir. As is often the case, there are subtle links to the author's other stories, if you can find them.
Synopsis: Pandinus Imperator (You can call him Pan, he won't mind) is knocked back in time during the Canterlot Invasion, and accidentally kills King Sombra on arrival. Instead of being executed, the changeling is surprised to find himself being hailed as a hero, and is promptly put on the throne as the new monarch, the Crystal Emperor. However, Pan now faces a great many problems, among them Celestia and Luna, who seem certain that the changeling is secretly up to no good, as well as several political factions secretly plotting to undermine his reign. There's also the tiny problem of the constant snowstorm that threatens to cut the city off from the outside world permanently. The Crystal Ponies need a hero now more than ever before. Why did they get a changeling instead?
Comments: A humorous fic about what would happen if a changeling accidently went back in time and accidently defeated King Sombra and was made ruler of the Crystal Empire out of gratitude.
Synopsis: Scootaloo has always been a filly with big dreams, but can they all come true? At the very least, she can always follow in the hoofsteps of her hero, right?
Comments: A fantastic story. A Tear Jerker, but still optimistic, the fic really captures the ponies' characterizations and fleshes out Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo's relationship. Inspired an author-endorsed follow-up/side-story Shine by The Descendant, which is also just as fantastic. Also featured at Equestria Daily.
Synopsis: Twilight Sparkle has come down with Horn Pox, a common illness among unicorns. However, while relatively harmless to children who normally recover and become immune, it's potentially fatal to older ones who have never had it before and Twilight's life is put in serious jeopardy. As Rainbow Dash rushes to find a herb that grows nearby which can cure her, she encounters an old enemy of the Mane Cast, the Great and Powerful Trixie. However, upon hearing of Twilight's plight, the showboating unicorn quickly offers her hep. Why does Trixie want to help? Why does she seem to know so much about the illness now threatening Twilight's life? And does she too carry an unusual connection to the group no one is aware of?
Synopsis: My name is Artemis, I was sworn in as Princess Celestia's personal guard quite some time ago. I've watched her for so many years and silently stood by her side during all the recent ups and downs of her reign. Now I'm going to tell her how I feel. I know it would never work, we're just too different. But sometimes, there are things in a stallion's life he just has to do, and things he has to get off his chest. What happens tonight will be anypony's guess, but one thing is for certain... it will be a night to remember.
Comments: One of the very few stories to get a perfect review score from Kalash93. It is incredible.
Synopsis: Derpy Hooves is taking a day off from Mail Service to celebrate her daughter's birthday. The only problem is, her birthday is in four months. Why would Derpy celebrate her daughter's birthday so early?
Synopsis: The glamorous unicorn Opalescence is haunted by bizarre recurring dreams of a world in which she and her friends are all animals. But as vivid as these dreams are, surely they're just dreams, right? There couldn't actually be a parallel universe somewhere where they're little more than pets ... right?
''Synopsis: "As i sit in my trench hole, I think to my wife, family, and friends; those who've I've lost and will never see again."
Comments: Exactly What It Says on the Tin. The fic is a sentimental piece about a soldier in an alternate universe Equestria going through something like World War One. It's a strong short piece; it'll only take a minute to read.
Synopsis: Years after the humiliation she suffered in Ponyville, Trixie has managed to scrape her way back to the top, even so far as managing to land a performance at the Grand Galloping Gala replaying the victory of the Elements' victory over Discord (their similar color scheme to those obnoxious hecklers and that upstaging brat is almost certainly just a coincidence). However, while she's studying Discord's statue, Discord enacts an escape plan by making Trixie go critical and uses the excess magic to break himself free. Though successful and knocking out Trixie in the process, it takes everything he's got and almost passes out from exhaustion. Desperate to avoid being re-imprisoned by a no doubt alerted Celestia, he possesses the unconscious Trixie. Unfortunately for him, he's pretty much out of power and is stuck connected to Trixie, something he tries to remedy by empowering her and siphoning off her excess magic. Celestia knows something is going on, and has her followed by the Elements of Harmony, something Discord quickly discovers and take whatever fun at their expense he can. Trixie for her part has no idea about the machinations going on around her, and is instead enjoying a resurgence in success, but familiar faces and unwanted memories start sticking their noses in where they are not welcome.
Synopsis: Trixie returns to Ponyville with a brand new performance, a retelling of Nightmare Moon's defeat by the Elements of Harmony. However, it's not very accurate. Is Trixie attempting to humiliate them, or does she have something else in mind?
Comments: Starts out very humorous as it becomes clear Trixie has only a cursory understanding of the protagonists' roles, with Rarity as a magic-winged weatherpony who destroys clouds with focused sunlight and Fluttershy as a loud, belligerent monster slayer who makes dragons explode by staring at them. Turns adventurous as the challenges they face in the forest becomes significantly more epic. Ends heartwarmingly as both the reader and the protagonists realizes that Trixie genuinely intended to honor them, and managed to capture the essence of the whole thing.
Synopsis: After finally hitting rock bottom and losing her last important possession, Trixie is issued a challenge by Princess Luna. Now, Trixie finds herself caught up in a fight against Luna's six ex-lovers for the right to claim the princess for her own, and she cannot afford to lose, even though she never agreed to this to begin with. What is Luna really up to? How does Celestia play into this? And why does Twilight Sparkle urge Trixie to win, when she's one of the challengers?
Comments: Despite what the title may imply, this story only shares a few similarities with Scott Pilgrim. It is also considerably less lighthearted and set in a very dark alternate version of Equestria, so you have been warned. That said, it is action-packed and highly recommended. Contains Trixie/Luna shipping.
Synopsis: Twilight reads a book about literature and, analysing her world, decides that everything she does is planned by someone other than her. She does not take it very well. Rated Everyone for adult humour.
Synopsis: An introspective piece centered on Twilight and her interactions with Celestia, Luna, and Trixie; Twilight Sparkle returns to Canterlot at Celestia's bequest and revisits some old memories. If you treat everyone extra nice, you'll find you can get out of any situation you find yourself in.
Synopsis: One dark and stormy night, Twilight Sparkle is visited by a strange pony. But this pony knows a lot about Twilight Sparkle; in fact, she might just be Twilight's number one fan. And that couldn't be a bad thing, right?
Synopsis: Twilight Sparkle. A name known to everpony in all of Equestria. She's saved Equestria multiple times now, and with her and her friends being the Elements of Harmony, as well as being Princess Celestia's "Most Faithful Student", she enjoys a great life. But what was before that? Follow her on her journey through foalhood, and her times as Celestia's Student.
Synopsis: Fluttershy now lives a lonely life, traveling East, away from Equestria. It wasn't too long ago that a thin layer of powdery snow blanketed the ground. Now it was nothing more than nourishment for the blossoming flowers sprouting up in its place. All she has keeping her company are the soothing thoughts of her old friends and the few keepsakes she could smuggle out of Ponyville. For guidance, she looks forward towards the sunrises laid out before her; the sunsets are there to remind her of shady memories and the cold embracement of night. She is far from her home in Ponyville now and the creatures here aren't as friendly as those she knew back home. It seems as if her one her one specialty, the sole thing she's retained has turned against her. Life may be hard without the guidance of her friends, but just as life will, she must continue on until she finds what she set out for. [This story was inspired by Austraeoh by Imploding Colon. It contains a few scenes of gore, but they are not frequent and don't represent Umbreka as a whole, read on with discretion.]
Synopsis: Another year has passed, and the Cutie Mark Crusaders are still without their cutie marks. Now well past the time when they should have discovered their special talents, it’s time for them to receive the only kind of assistance that can help a cutie mark appear, the understanding heart of another. The counselor who once helped Cheerilee when she got her cutie mark will certainly have his hooves full today!
Comments: The author has several good Cutie Mark Crusader fics, but this one in particular has an interesting premise in the idea of a counselor who specializes in helping ponies with their cutie marks both before (as in helping discover their true talents) and after (deciphering what the more abstract cutie marks can mean).
Synopsis: Twilight tests out a spell from a book written by Starswirl the Bearded, with no information as to its effects. It ends up sending her to an Alternate Universe, where she learns from Alternate!Spike that it was a highly unstable Universe Hopping Spell that Alternate!Twilight decided against testing a month earlier. Twilight now has no clear way to get back, but she can access any universe that she's already jumped to. Eventually, after making 63 of these jumps, Twilight comes face to face with Dusk Shine - and promptly gets stranded for several months, thanks to Prince Solaris overreacting to what he thinks is a potentially dangerous intruder.
Note: Recent chapters are shipping Twilight/Elusive, but it isn't enough of a focus for the Shipping page yet.
Synopsis for Breaking Point : Equestria is a land of magic and harmony, a peaceful realm ruled by immortal, benevolent monarchs. But at what cost is this possible? A fateful encounter leads Twilight Sparkle to find out exactly how.
Synopsis for Reckoning : Sequel to Breaking Point. The war rages on in Equestria as the Heartland (the Equestria from the show) is drawn in.
Synopsis: After Chrysalis failed to conquer Equestria, she was shamefully stripped of her title of "Queen of the Changelings". Their people now leaderless, the Changeling race now finds itself in a unique situation. In the struggle for power, one Changeling seizes the attention of his people. Can he overcome his nature, and the nature of his people, to lead them into a better future?
Comments: This story does a great job of expanding on the Changeling race, giving them a nation, capital city, and political system. It also focuses on showing them as perfectly normal, with Chrysalis being a tyrant in their eyes and her army just a rogue faction of the Changeling military. Of course, not all Changelings are good either, such as certain members of the Council (one of whom is the Big Bad) and a few hired assassins.
As for the protagonist and titular visionary, Aurus, the story also does a top notch job of making him likable. Now at first he may come off as a Gary Stu (people love him, he gets crazy powerful, and he's an excellent strategist), but somehow the author manages to prevent him from truly being one (giving him flaws helps, his friends are just as responsible for his success as he himself is, and when he begins to truly get powerful, the energy he absorbs not only almost kills him, but he has to spend six months constantly training to harness it), and simply just has him be a badass. He even gets shipped with Applejack for good measure, giving her some much needed character development. Be sure to give this one a go. It gets pretty epic.
Synposis: Everypony is her own worst critic, but few take it to the extreme that Derpy does. Still, where friendship and magic abound, a helping hoof is never far away, if only she'll reach out and take it.
Comments: If you have a friend like this or are like this, you will recognize the mind of Derpy as it constantly snipes at her.
Synopsis: How would things be different if Twilight had never made it to Ponyville? Twilight Sparkle finds out just how different things could be when she is forced to travel to her own past while chasing down a mystery; a plot to erase Princess Twilight Sparkle from history.
Landing in a time just weeks after the one thousandth Summer Sun Celebration, she finds a world shrouded in an eternal night, where the Elements of Harmony were never recovered. Can she fix the things that should have, but didn't happen? Or is this Equestria destined to head down a different path?
Synopsis: (from Equestria Daily) Mare Do Well has come and gone and Rainbow Dash has learned her lesson. Letter written, problem solved... right? Only lessons sometimes teach us more than we intend, as Twilight Sparkle learns.
Comments: This is essential reading after watching "The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well", as it goes deep into detail why humiliating Rainbow like that was a bad idea. It even reveals an interesting fact: This was all Twilight's idea, and that a good amount of the ponies involved felt that this was wrong.
Synopsis: Somepony had to create the Elements of Harmony. In the dark days of Discord's rule, Celestia called upon Vulcan, a minotaur blacksmith of legendary renown, to put harmony on his forge and hammer out a weapon with which she could defeat Discord. After Discord had been defeated, Celestia discovers he has also created a set of elements that oppose the Elements of Harmony. Vulcan ... is branded a traitor and is doomed to be imprisoned far, far away from Equestria. He has only one final request: to explain to the Princess why he created what he calls the True Elements of Harmony.
Synopsis: "Deep in Gryphona, frozen land of the griffins, a mysterious pony searches for the friend who has been running from her for a hundred years. What do you do, however, when the friend you once knew is not the same as he used to be? What do you do if he is now a danger to innocents? What should you do when it is all your fault?"
Comments: An Outside POV Oneshot that only gets darker the longer you think about it, and the longer it goes on the more you want to deny what's happening. Every time Twilight decided that she totally knew what she was doing with that one spell? Yeah. This happens.
Synopsis: "Equestria's Guard: the Bravest and the Best. Do you have what it takes?" So the advertisements say. When Rainbow Dash saves the life of Princess Luna, however, she quickly comes to learn that there's a lot more to the guard than what everypony knows. As she faces down threats to her friends, her Princesses, and her country, Rainbow will have to decide exactly who she is loyal to.
Comments: This fic is fantastic. The canon characters remain true to their portrayals in the show, the author's created characters are interesting, well-developed, and engaging. The story is engrossing. And Loyal Liar has somehow done the impossible: quality chapters delivered on a timely schedule of considerable size (each chapter is around 12000 words usually). If you have a few hours free, go on a reading binge. You won't be disappointed.
Synopsis: Fable, a snarky little mare, has a penchant for finding trouble. When she finds a secret too big to keep, the truth will force her on a journey across a world she was convinced was gone, and with only one word to guide her way: Equestria.
Comments: This fanfic also has its own wiki, which expands A LOT the canon, adding new races, places, history and ideas of how magic works. Link
Synopsis: Twilight Sparkle casts a spell in a foreign language, unfortunately, things don't go well and she ends stuck up in the White Void; an empty and endless white space, accompanied with Rainbow Dash.
However, questions start invading Rainbow's head. What were her friend's intentions to cast such a powerful spell? Will they get out of the Void or will they lose their sanity in it?
Inspired by the story Austraeoh (though it will differ enormely).
Synopsis: A letter from Celestia interrupts one of Pinkie's parties with disturbing news. Now friendships will be pushed to the limit as Twilight struggles to uncover which of her friends is not who, or even what, she appears to be.
Comments: A very gripping fic that presents what would happen when Twilight learns that one of her friends is a changeling spy. It delves into not only how Twilight and the other four ponies cope with knowing one of their friends has been lying to them for as long as they've known each other, but also the changeling's fears of being cornered by the ponies she allowed herself to become friends with, all without giving away her identity. Be warned that it does feature shipping between Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash.
Synopsis: When Diamond Tiara suddenly dies in a tragic accident, The Cutie Mark Crusaders must come to terms with her death. But how does one feel when suddenly your tormentor is gone?
Comments: This is a very thoughtful and well-written series exploring how the Crusaders sort through their thoughts and feelings regarding Diamond Tiara and her death. The author delves deep into the trio's individual reactions, showing the many ways people deal with the death of another.
Synopsis: A... minor accident at Sweet Apple Acres sends Big Macintosh to Ponyville in the middle of applebuck season. At first, things seem fine. But then some of the mares begin acting a little... oddly. Then very oddly. Turns out every other stallion skipped town for a very good reason.
Synopsis: After reading a book by Spitfire's personal trainer, Rainbow Dash decides that the best way to get closer to her ultimate goal of joining the Wonderbolts is to add strength training to her practices by having one of her friends ride her. However, when she decides that Twilight Sparkle is just the mare for the job, the pegasus gets a bit more than she bargained for.
Comments: This story is really well-written. The author absolutely nails Rainbow Dash and Twilight Sparkle's characterizations, and depicts their relationship skillfully. Note, this is not a shipping fic. The relationships in the fic are completely platonic, not withstanding some Not What It Looks Like moments. Also featured on Equestria Daily.
Synopsis: Little Rainbow Dash is loyal to one pony and one pony only: herself. It's a simple system, and it gets her through the days. But that all changes one stormy summer afternoon at flight camp, when another pegasus blunders into her life—a pegasus with whom she shares nothing in common.
Synopsis: A near death experience for Twilight has her questioning her place in life, and her worth to those she cares for. Unable to stand the nagging doubts that her friends don't truly love her, Twilight seeks out each of her friends for questioning to discover the truth, however painful it may be
Comment: Full of the kind of sweet fluff you'd expect from the show itself, this fic really hits close to home for anyone with self esteem issues. Rather then a generic "of course we love you!" from the rest of the Mane Six, the author takes the time to really deliver a different message with the same meaning from each personality.
Update: Rather unfortunately, the author has pulled all of his work off of his profile. Primalcorn1 feels that stories about ponies does not mesh with his reason of being a writer. Look up his profile for the specifics if you must.
Synopsis: It has been exactly one year since the defeat of Nightmare Moon and the return of Princess Luna. As preparations get underway for the Summer Sun Celebration once again, Luna is called upon to fulfill a promise she made to the very ponies who saved her from the Nightmare.
Synopsis: The Changeling hive needs the upcoming invasion of Canterlot to succeed. The preperations will soon be complete. All they need is intelligence to give them a way in. You are the one tasked with collecting it from an unlucky pony by any means necessary. This will not be over quicky. Neither of you will enjoy this.
Comments: A great pece of fiction. The torture feels very realistic and is amazingly well written. Prepare to squirm.
