* HeroesWantRedheads: Averted by Mahanon, who, when clarifying his actual relationship with the auburn-haired Victoria, assures Cassandra that "I prefer brunettes." Cullen plays it straight; Bull's appreciation for redheads from the game is also present.

* DoesNotLikeShoes: Solas, according to Varric in ''The Skyhold Runner's Guide to Survival''.

* InnocentCohabitation: At Haven, the Heralds are housed in the same building with a divider built between their beds, so that the healer can look after both at the same time. When they make the move to Skyhold, they request that the stonemasons put a similar divider between their beds in the tower so they can continue to do this, rather than try to find equally lavish dwellings for both Inquisitors. Victoria admits [[HatesBeingAlone she sleeps better knowing Mahanon is nearby]].

They Fight Crime is no longer a trope

* TheyFightCrime: Invoked by Felix when giving Dorian information about the Heralds of Andraste. "She's a human noble from Ostwick; he’s a Dalish elf from the Free Marches forests. They fight crime."

* TheyFightCrime: Varric jokingly invokes it in his opening NoteFromEd.
-->My esteemed human colleague here is a woman I call Scholar. Together, we fight crime.
-->No, wait, together we write history. Fighting crime is Aveline's job.

* FormulaBreakingEpisode:
** Chapter 19, in which Inquisition scout Jim has a variety of mishaps, is presented as being this. Most of the document claims to be "Adapted from the historical record" by the author, but the "editor's note" at the beginning of this chapter states that it was told to Varric directly by one of the scouts who was present at the time, and he felt it was "too good not to include."
** Later, chapter 27 is handled in a similar manner; Varric explains in another "editor's note" that the Chantry record contained very few details about what happened [[spoiler:in the Fade]], so he wheedled a few bits from both Victoria and Cole and pieced the chapter together from that.

Added DiffLines:

* PresentAbsence: For the few chapters during which [[spoiler:Mahanon is a prisoner of the Venatori]], his absence from the group is keenly felt.

Added DiffLines:

* OneSteveLimit: Lady Inquisitor Victoria and [[spoiler:Divine Victoria]] at the end of the first story. This was an accident when the character was created, as the game had just been released and the author didn't know anything about the second character's existence until she reached the epilogue.

Added DiffLines:

* RealLifeWritesThePlot:
** The series was/is being written as a gift for the author's "best friend and self-appointed bodyguard." The relationship between the Inquisitors is heavily inspired by the friendship between the players, although the age difference is reversed. This is likewise true of the Wardens in the prologue; Lady Norbert likes playing human noble swordswomen, while her best friend likes playing male elf rogues. (However, they both play Hawke the same way in ''VideoGame/DragonAgeII'', as a female rogue who romances Fenris, so the story has only one Hawke.)
** Another minor example: Briala's comment about Victoria being a LadyDrunk is something that actually happens in game, depending on where a Trevelyan Inquisitor first encounters the character; when the author played the game for the first time, she triggered the dialogue in question. For [[DarkAndTroubledPast personal reasons]], she was extremely angry about this and made a point of including it just so Mahanon could express that anger for her.

Added DiffLines:

* RetCon: A few details in ''All This Sh*t is Twice as Weird'' had to be changed or corrected after the chapters containing them were released, such as Hawke's age. After ''Across the Waking Sea'' was posted, a couple of chapters were slightly revamped to make their events line up more accurately with the letters which described them.

Added DiffLines:

* ShoutOut:
** To the multiplayer, where it's mentioned that Cullen "smells like elderflower and oakmoss." In chapter 29 of ''Twice as Weird'', Cassandra presents him with an herbal salve containing these exact ingredients; as noted on the Fridge Brilliance page for ''Inquisition,'' elderflower is a pain reliever when applied topically and oakmoss is a restorative, so Cass is hoping that the salve will help with his lyrium withdrawal symptoms.
** In one of his editor's notes in ''Doubling Down'', Varric makes a remark about the sand in the Hissing Wastes. "[[Film/StarWarsEpisodeIIAttackOfTheClones It's rough and coarse and irritating]]."
** ''The Skyhold Runner's Guide to Survival'' contains a number of shout-outs:
*** Varric describes Skyhold thus: "While this castle isn’t of the '[[Franchise/HarryPotter shifting floorplan and stairs that lead somewhere else on Friday]]' sort, it is very large and sometimes confusing."
*** In another part, he claims he can't remember the name of Skyhold's chief herbalist, and calls her "Elon Vi'musk or something like that" in reference to [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elon_Musk Elon Musk]]. (Her name is Elan Vem'al.)
*** The chapter about the members of the inner circle is titled "[[Literature/TheLordOfTheRings The Fellowship of the Thing]]," and Varric makes the comment that nine companions "[[{{Pun}} has a nice ring to it]]."
** ''If Non Can Learn to Do It'' is almost entirely a shout-out to the Broadway version of ''Theatre/{{Anastasia}}'', consisting mostly of a FilkSong based on "Learn to Do It." It also has a nod to Leliana's memetic love of shoes.

Added DiffLines:

* CallBack:
** Much like in the actual game, the narrative contains various call backs to the first and second games in the ''Dragon Age'' franchise. For example, Leliana explains how she knows about the secret passage leading into Redcliffe Castle, and has a silver symbol of Andraste which was a gift from Elissa Cousland; in the first game, this is one of the gifts which the player can present to her.
** Some of the background details, such as Brother Genitivi having been rescued from Haven via a boat on Lake Calenhad, are actually call backs to the author's earliest ''Dragon Age'' [[Fanfic/ShadowAndRose fan fiction]]. Many things mentioned in the prologue were initially planned to appear in a sequel to that story, which never got written.
** In ''The Skyhold Runner's Guide to Survival,'' Varric advises the prospective runners to let him know right away if anyone [[VideoGame/DragonAgeII ever asks them to help gather ingredients they don't recognize]].

* SecretKeeper: Victoria ultimately becomes this for Cullen regarding what he endured as a young Templar in the Fereldan circle, and how it made the ball in Halamshiral so difficult for him. The other Inquisition leaders know he was uncomfortable with the Orlesian attention, but she's the only one who knows ''why.'' (It's implied that [[TheEmpath Cole]] also knows, but he doesn't speak of it to anyone but her.)

to:

* SecondhandStorytelling: Some of the canonical events of the game are described through letters, reports, or conversation after the fact, rather than showing the events to the readers directly. For example, the reader doesn't 'go along' when Mahanon goes to recruit the Templars and Victoria does likewise with the mages; instead, when the characters reunite and give their reports to the council, the quests are described there.

Added DiffLines:

* OddFriendship: As in the first story, Mahanon and Victoria still have this. She ruminates on it shortly before they separate in the Frostback Basin, wondering how she ever came to be so close to someone with whom she has so little in common; yet despite their differences, she concludes that she knows him better than she knows herself.

* BuffySpeak: Somewhat invoked; Varric says that Sera was deliberately chosen as the point-of-view character for chapter four because the author (who is a history writer in real life) was starting to worry that she sounded too much like Brother Genitivi in her storytelling, and "Nobody in Thedas could ever possibly sound less like Brother Genitivi than Sera."

* LetsSplitUpGang: Not long after their arrival in the Frostback Basin, word comes regarding the dwarves' predicament in the Deep Roads. It's decided to divide the remaining companions into two teams in order to tackle both situations with as much haste as possible. Victoria remains in the Basin to deal with the Jaws of Hakkon, assisted by Varric, Cole, Blackwall, and [[spoiler:Bethany]]. Mahanon, meanwhile, leads the expedition below the Storm Coast, with Cassandra, Bull, Dorian, and Sera. The division is deliberately chosen to ensure that each team has two warriors, two rogues, and a mage.
