- Korekiyo, like Tenko in canon, pulls this off by accident. Sure, he meant to shield Tsumugi, Kaito, Angie, and Kokichi from Glitch, but he had no idea what would happen as a result. However, he doesn’t regret it one bit.
- Gonta performs a Tuck and Cover on Kokichi, shielding him from Rush.
- Tsumugi pulls a Draw Aggro on Figure, drawing it away from Kaito and Kokichi, who wouldn’t have made it otherwise.
- Heroic Second Wind: Played With. Kokichi seems to get one, but really he’s just pretending.
- General Failure: Kokichi sees himself as this, no matter what the others tell him.
- Go Out with a Smile: Korekiyo dies with a smile on his face. So does Gonta, later in the story.
- Guilt Complex: Kokichi seems to have developed one.
- Incurable Cough of Death: Kaito’s is still going strong.
- In the Back: Where Figure attacks Kokichi.
- More Hero than Thou: A brief dispute occurs between Kokichi and Gonta on which of them would be able to hide from Rush. In the end, neither get in the closet, but Gonta pulls a Tuck and Cover to protect Kokichi, getting him killed.
- Out-of-Character Moment: The whole fanfic is this for Kokichi. It also is for Tsumugi and Korekiyo, while they’re alive.
- Please Wake Up: Kokichi tends to do this whenever Kaito passes out. He also does this when Gonta dies.
- Redemption Equals Death: Tsumugi.
- To a lesser extent, Korekiyo.
- Ship Tease: So, so much between Kokichi and Kaito.
- Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Rantaro seems to feel this way about Tsumugi.
- Took a Level in Kindness: Kokichi, Korekiyo, and Tsumugi.
- Tragic Keepsake: Angie keeps Korekiyo’s hat after his death.
- Waxing Lyrical: The title is a lyric from Jagwar Twin’s ‘’Happy Face’’.
- We Hardly Knew Ye: Poor Tenko, with her ‘’two’’ lines of dialogue…
- What You Are in the Dark: Upon seeing the trope, one of the authors believed Tsumugi’s Heroic Sacrifice via Draw Aggro to be this. She easily could have left Kokichi and Kaito to be caught by Figure, and claimed to the others that they just weren’t fast enough. Yet, she still chose to draw its attention.
- Wounded Hero, Weaker Helper: Kaito spends about three-quarters of the fic on death’s door due to his illness, with Kokichi being essentially his main means of support.
