He would make a place in this world. He would create a homeland. And he would bring death to all who opposed him.
— The summary

The Tale of the Devourers is a Fantasy / Sci-Fi Fanfic by StaffSergeant, the same author of The Night Unfurls and The Good Hunter. Published on October 14, 2022, it is a crossover between Kenshi and Kuroinu: Kedakaki Seijo wa Hakudaku ni Somaru.

The Tale of the Devourers provides examples of:

  • BFS: The Topper is a nodachinote  with a top-heavy blade.
  • The Blacksmith: Among the Devourers, Kabuto is the armour smith, while Mempo is the weapon smith.
  • Every Japanese Sword is a Katana: Averted. Locust's blade, the Topper, is a nodachi, not a katana.
  • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: Averted. Locust wears full Samurai armor, helmet included, in battle. For a demonstration on the helmet's importance, Locust takes a hit to the head from a slaver's sword in Chapter 1. All he gets is a shallow notch to the helmet, instead of a lethal wound to the head.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Genderghast and his crossbowmen are capable of firing precise shots at a rate and accuracy no human archer can match.
  • The Leader: Locust is the headstrong leader of the Devourers. Under his leadership, the band withstood every threat his homeland (noted to be a savage land filled with petty wars) threw at it. At present, he is determined to create a community for his band.
  • The Medic: The sci-fi variant. Noita and Nitra are responsible for repair work.
  • No Indoor Voice: Beep speaks in all caps.
  • Number Two: Cricket is Locust's second in command.
  • Only in It for the Money: Pay is the top priority for Locust and his band. He also doesn't like being stiffed out of payment.
Locust: (to Alderman Jacob Evans) I don't work for free, human. So... like I said, how much are you gonna pay for protection?
  • Our Orcs Are Different: Orcs are strong, tough, green-skinned, muscle-packed humanoids, described by Evans as war bands who destroy for the sake of it. They are sometimes deployed to raid villages for slaves.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Cricket's P.O.V. describes Beep as "absolutely menacing in full plate despite his diminutive size". Fast, and strong enough to use a nodachi (a heavy, large Japanese sword akin to a greatsword), he is among the top fighters in the Devourers.
  • Start My Own: Locust is not fond of his homeland and its petty wars. Thus, his motivation is to create a community of his own, for the Devourers, his team. He takes his first steps by setting up his base of operations in the borderlands of the Empire of Negramstia (in the Kuroinu 'verse).
  • Third-Person Person: Beep refers to himself as "Beep", or "Cyber Beep".
  • Tin Tyrant: Inverted. The Protagonist Locust is neither a Black Knight nor an Evil Overlord, yet the leader of the Devourers is covered head to toe in Samurai armour, facial armour and helmet included, and is hated for his callous disregard of the people in the Kuroinu 'verse. Even his entire band are referred to as "metal men".
