The Scorpion and the Frog is a Naruto Self-Insert Fic where the main character finds that she's been reincarnated as the twin sister of Itachi Uchiha. She decides to just live life the way she wants to and does whatever she finds amusing. It is complete as of February 17, 2022.
The Scorpion and the Frog contains examples of:
- Adaptational Angst Downgrade: Unlike in canon, Sasuke has one family member left that he can rely on following the Uchiha Massacre.
- Adaptational Angst Upgrade:
- Itachi actually has it even worse than he did in canon. Thanks to Kaeru's actions, he's forced to remain in Konoha after the Uchiha Massacre, live in the same part of the village where he helped cut down his brethren, and lie to Sasuke about what happened so that his younger brother will eventually kill not only himself, like in canon, but Kaeru as well.
- Sasuke also has it worse here, as he has to go through the trauma of killing a sibling under false circumstances twice.
- Attack Reflector: Kaeru's Mangekyo Sharingan gives her the ability to do this with Kunitokotachi. When activated, it transfers the damage/attack done to her to a target of her choosing that is within her line of sight.
- Handicapped Badass: Both Itachi and Kaeru don't let the fact that they're dying of a genetic disease stop them from being complete badasses who can take on all but the strongest shinobi.
- Incurable Cough of Death: Kaeru suffers from this, as she has the same genetic disease that her twin Itachi does.
- In Spite of a Nail: Most of the story doesn't deviate from the canon.
- Internal Reveal: Right before his fight with Sasuke, Itachi tells the clan heads of Konoha the truth of the Uchiha Massacre.
- Not Me This Time: After Kaeru is brought back as a Reanimation and regains her free will via Kotoamatsukami she runs in to Sasuke. One of the things he asks her is how did she manage to kill Danzo. After getting some more details out of Sasuke, she explains that she had nothing to do with that and that the real culprit is her teammate Tatsuma.
- Point of Divergence: Itachi hides one of Shisui's eyes inside Sasuke instead of Naruto in order to protect his brother.
- Suicide by Cop: Both Kaeru and Itachi do this with Sasuke.
- Trauma Button: Kaeru regularly pushes this when fighting, making her opponents more susceptible to her genjutsu.
- In her fights with Kakashi, she makes him remember killing Rin by putting him in similar scenarios.
- In her fights with Sasuke, she constantly looks down on him while nonchalantly talking about their massacred clan.
- When fighting Naruto, she taunts Naruto about how Sasuke left the village and Naruto's inability to stop him.
- In her fight with Kabuto, she taunts him over the fact that his own mother tried to kill him and in the end didn't even recognize her son. This was so savage that it even caused Itachi and Sasuke to stop fighting for a moment and look at Kaeru in shock.
- Troll: Kaeru loves messing with people whenever possible, usually with jokes that only she finds amusing.
- True Companions: Kaeru's teammates are loyal to her no matter what. Not even being branded a criminal who killed almost her entire clan can shake the trust between them.
- The Un-Reveal: Chapter 5 has Kaeru think about how she was able to unlock the Mangekyo Sharingan, but even she doesn't remember how it happened.It's something she's often wondered. If there's two people in a car, and one of them's driving, but it's not the one who should be— is it the person who crashed, or the person who was sitting in the passenger's seat?
At this point, she doesn't even remember who was who. - Vengeance Denied: Sasuke is unable to exact his vengeance on Danzo for orchestrating the Uchiha Massacre due to Danzo being assassinated by Tatsuma.
