Go To

Kicked out by his parents when they find out his secret. Danny Fenton tries to figure out his future. Upon helping Wulf from Walker’s henchmen, he offers his use of his skill to give Danny a trip to another world. After thinking it over with Jazz, he accepts. This new world looks quite nice and interesting. Especially when eighty percent of its inhabitants have special powers. It is in this new place that Danny makes the choices that will lead him to a life he didn’t expect but will certainly make the most of it.

The Choice is a crossover fanfic between Danny Phantom and My Hero Academia written by RusEmp, the same author of The Ghost Who Got A Job. It can be read both in Fanfiction.net here and at Archive of Our Own here. It tells the tale of Danny in a world in which he may finally fit in, in skills and ideals.

Not to be mistaken for the 2016 film of the same name.

The Choice contains the following tropes.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Kirishima is introduced earlier due to him being the first future UA student that Danny meets.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Danny loathes electrocution or electric attacks, since this is the way he “died”. When he’s hit by Kaminari at the second trial of the Sport Festival, he’s naturally pissed off and gleefully pays him back.
    • Katsuki really hates it when Danny refers to him as Number Two. Naturally, this makes Danny keep doing it.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Tsukauchi and All Might half-theorize that, somehow, Danny is All for One’s progeny because of his looks, mannerisms and various powers in his ghost form. Even Kurogiri thinks about this at the attack at the USJ and explicitly asks All For One about it afterwards.
Kurogiri : Could you... by any chance... have sired a child all those years ago?
  • Fight Clubbing: Danny went into one in the first chapters (under the Pariah alias) in order to make money for his upgrades and keeps doing it after he’s taken in by Tsukauchi. This helps him figure out the League’s plans to attack the USJ and plan accordingly. It eventually bites him in the ass as the HPSC uses this information to force Danny to take his internship with them.
  • Haunted House: Subverted, since it’s only an abandoned house that Danny takes residence in. It had legends around it, all of them fake so it was never a haunted house to begin with. Then he uses his ghost powers to make it look like one in order to spook Kirishima and some other unnamed teens who barged inside as a dare.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Shigaraki ends up being hit by his own Nomu when Danny overshadows it at the USJ attack..
  • I Owe You My Life: One of the main reasons that Tsukauchi takes Danny in and becomes his legal guardian is that he saved his life.
  • Jack of All Trades: Danny quickly realizes he is this compared to his ghostly Rogues Gallery. He doesn’t grant wishes like Desiree or manipulates tech like Technus and doesn’t have something truly his (sans his Ghostly Wail, probably), but he polishes his myriad skills since it doesn’t make him as predictable as them.
  • Large Ham: Danny likes to be dramatic in and out of battle sometimes. This has the unfortunate side effect of drawing more accidental parallels between him and All For One.
  • Mugging the Monster: A group of thugs try to attack Danny for his money not too long after he arrives at the Quirkverse. He promptly puts them in their place with his superior power.
  • No-Sell: Danny is immune to Aizawa’s Quirk since his ghost powers are not a Quirk.
  • Parental Substitute: Tsukauchi becomes Danny’s legal guardian. They’re on quite friendly terms about it and Danny sees him as an improvement above his own biological parents. Upon meeting Makoto, she and Danny quickly hit it off.
  • Power Copying: If the energies are similar to his ectoplasm, Danny can assimilate and copy his opponent’s Quirk. Such as Kurogiri’s portals.
  • Scare Dare: Before applying for the UA Entrance Exam, Kirishima, along with three more teenagers, entered an abandoned house, unaware that someone had been living on the second floor for a while, with Danny being that someone. This tickles Danny’s mischievous side and uses his ghost powers to give them a big scare.
  • Secret-Keeper: Danny easily figures out that Aoyama is the League’s mole and confronts him about it, but he doesn’t divulge the secret. He only instructs Aoyama into telling him any new information the League may provide.
  • Shout-Out: Chapter 15, in the middle of the first trial of the Sport Festival
Danny: You cheeky dick-waffle. You ain't seen nothing yet!
  • Spanner in the Works: Because Danny figured them out in his Pariah persona, Danny is well prepared for the League of Villains when they attack at the USJ. Moreover, it’s him who confronts and defeats Nomu before All Might’s arrival.
  • Villain Takes an Interest:
    • All For One is amused by Danny’s actions, especially since All Might, Tsukauchi and even Kurogiri half-believe that Danny is his child.
    • The HPSC is also interested in Danny after the Sport Festival and is very eager to have him in their grasp. To the point of scaring off any internship offers to be handed to Danny and making it legally impossible for him to get out of Japan (to Makoto’s frustration). Only two agencies didn’t back down, one of them turning out to be Endeavor’s, much to Danny’s surprise.
  • You Remind Me of X:
    • Captain Celebrity reminds Danny too much of Dash for his liking.
    • Danny himself tends to remind Tsukauchi and All Might of All For One, to the point of actually wondering if Danny is All For One’s lost child. All Might explicitly tells Danny that (without telling him specifically who).
All Might: You know, you remind me of one person.
    Danny: Really?
  • Wham Line: Chapter 14
All For One: By the way, what about that wolf creature we found?
