Fanfic / Sword of the Jedi Trilogy

Go To

A fan novelization of the cancelled Sword of the Jedi trilogy written by Hand Of Thrawn 45, based on the cancelled trilogy which was supposed to be written by Christie Golden before the Star Wars Legends continuity was cancelled following the Disney purchase. As Jaina Solo and her husband Jagged journey to an old friend's wedding, Luke Skywalker sends his son Ben and Tahiri Veila on a secret mission to his homeworld of Tatooine. In the Unknown Regions, two mysterious fleets are clashing, and the new Wraith Squadron is sent to investigate. What they find will threaten to restart the worst war in galactic history.

The Trilogy spans three books, Remembrance, Revenge, and Redemption. The has author also written a followup trilogy (Jedi of the Future), and several additional spinoffs meant to tie up other loose ends in the Legends EU, which can be found here or on the author's page linked above.

This fanfic provides examples of the following tropes, which may include unmarked spoilers.

  • Back from the Dead: Jacen surprisingly comes back to life in the final book. He dies again, but not before redeeming himself.
  • Evil Counterpart: Jacen realizes during the final battle that he and Krayt have a great deal in common; both of them saw chaos and took it upon themselves to fix things at tremendous cost. The distance is that Jacen has known love and companionship, whereas Krayt's life since Order 66 has been one massive Trauma Conga Line. Jacen also ultimately realizes how foolhardy his actions were whereas Krayt doesn't.
  • Evil Former Friend: Darth Krayt is an interesting variation. He knew Anakin Skywalker, and both fell to the dark side, but Anakin fell first and Krayt fell decades later (after Anakin had redeemed himself).
  • Fatal Flaw: Jacen realizes that his was pride; he was so obsessed with being the hero that he shouldered everything alone and ultimately cracked under the pressure
  • Fix Fic: The author uses this story to fix some of the problems they had with the post-NJO EU. Vergere is revealed to have NOT been a Sith but someone who while somewhat misguided meant well (She admits that while she MET Lumiya she ultimately wrote her off as a sad individual blinded by her own pain). Jacen Solo is able to successfully redeem himself before dying a final time, while Luke Skywalker mellows out and realises that he became overly harsh in the years since the Dark Nest Crisis and Legacy of the Force.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Darth Krayt survives the Battle of Zonama Sekot. However, Jacen is assured that while Krayt will return, he will fall and this time it will be permanent.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Darth Krayt is this for the trilogy. He takes center stage in Redemption as the main antagonist.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Vestara gives her life to help Ben defeat Darth Wyrrlok. Jacen lets Krayt impale him to create an opening for Jaina to take him down. Hell, even SHIP sacrifices himself to save Ben because he wants Vestara to be happy and knows she'll only be happy with Ben.
  • The Juggernaut: Darth Krayt. During the final battle on Zonama Sekot Jaina considers him the most powerful opponent she's ever faced (more than even Jacen and Onimi) and Krayt more than lives up to this by effortlessly dominating both Jaina and Jacen. It takes Jacen letting Krayt impale him and using the opportunity to use his vong manipulating abilities on the armor for Jaina to get an opening to take him down.
  • Last-Second Chance: Anakin's ghost appears before Krayt after he's beaten, giving him a chance to turn away. Krayt refuses, saying that Anakin couldn't control the Dark Side because he was weak. Anakin can only say that while Krayt is right about Anakin being weak, Krayt is weak too.
  • The Lost Lenore: Jereveth Syne for A'Sharad Hett.
  • My Greatest Failure: Vergere considers A'Sharad one of them.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Krayt is an interesting variation. He's by no means stupid and he's definitely intelligent as well; at the same time it's clear that his core he's an angry child lashing out at the galaxy that hurt him.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Vestara dies saving Ben's life. Jacen also dies again ensuring Krayt's temporary defeat.
  • Retcon: Vergere's conversations with A'Sharad are portrayed differently than in the Legacy Comic. Rather than hinting at her Sith Allegiance she writes him off when she realizes just how bloodthirsty he is.
  • Spanner in the Works: Jacen's revival ends up being one for Darth Krayt, since his presence is what ultimately gives Jaina the opening to defeat him.
  • This Cannot Be!!: Wyyrlok is visibly stunned when Jacen appears alive and well.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Krayt is heavily implied to have undergone an even more brutal one than the Claws of the Dragon arc implied.
  • Villain Has a Point: Krayt tells Jacen that he was a mad dog who ultimately had to be put down by his sister. Jacen bitterly acknowledges that Krayt's entirely correct on that score.
