Fanfic / Red and Green in Blue

Go To

Red and Green in Blue is a Persona 4 one-shot by Theralion written in 2021.

It follows up on the events of the game. After the Amagi Inn closes, Yukiko Amagi, the former heiress, pivots to a career in law enforcement, working alongside her best friend Chie Satonaka. The fic chronicles their changing lives and friendship in the years to come.

The fic can be found here, and as a one shot, is complete.

The fic contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Deviation:
    • The Amagi Inn is still open in 2016 in canon, but here it closed in 2012.
    • Persona 5 strongly indicates that Rise is transitioning into an adult music career, but here she has outgrown her shelf life and been forced to retire.
  • All for Nothing: Yukiko worked so hard to inherit the Amagi Inn, only for it to close before she even made it out of high school.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Yukiko and Rise were in love with Yu, who rejected them and got together with another girl, while it's implied Chie has feelings for Yukiko.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Yukiko is as polite and courteous as in canon, but can be rather scary when she wants to be, often to intimidate suspects into cooperating.
  • Boring, but Practical: Yukiko's short hair is less conventionally feminine than the long hair she wears in the game, but is easier to take care of and meets the grooming standards for police officers. Chie finds she actually likes it better.
  • Brains and Brawn: Yukiko is intelligent but less physically fit than Chie, while Chie is in good shape but struggles with written exams. The two help each other overcome their respective weaknesses.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: It's portrayed as a sad fact of life, but the Investigation Team drifts apart as they enter adulthood. Yu, Yosuke, and Teddie have all left Inaba, Naoto isn't even mentioned, and while the remaining members are still polite and friendly, they aren't as close as they were in high school (with the sole exception of Chie and Yukiko).
  • Bus Crash: Muku (or Chosokabe, as Yukiko calls him) passes away while Chie and Yukiko are in the police academy.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: It's indicated that Yu's girlfriend, whose name is never revealed, dislikes Yukiko due to feeling threatened by her.
  • Graceful Loser: Both Yukiko and Rise gracefully accept Yu's rejection, and Chie does the same with Yukiko.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Chie and Yukiko continue their relationship as close but platonic friends a decade after the events of the game, and end the game with Yukiko reaffirming to Chie that she still wants to be friends with her.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Rise teases Yukiko and Chie about being bad at cooking, but Yukiko reminds her that she's never made anything as spicy as Rise's omelet.
  • Important Haircut: Yukiko cuts her hair short to meet the police's grooming regulations, and actually likes it better this way. She ends up inspiring a rumor that someone broke up with her.
  • Last-Name Basis: The fic, being based more off how the characters address each other in the Japanese version of Persona 4 has this more common.
    • The Investigation Team members, having drifted apart, generally use surnames on each other.
    • Even Yukiko and Chie end up calling the other "Satonaka-san" and "Amagi-san" while on duty to keep things professional. Chie finds this a bit awkward, but over time, gradually embraces this.
    • Nanako goes from caling Chie and Yukiko by their first names with the "onee-chan" suffix" to their last names and the "-san" suffix.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Rise still teases Yukiko and Chie about their Lethal Chef tendencies years later, although the two have since become competent cooks.
  • Riches to Rags: As a result of the Amagi Inn going out of business, Yukiko's family is forced to sell their business and live in a small apartment.
  • Second Love:
    • Rise, having gotten over her love for Yu, gets together with a different boyfriend.
    • Yukiko suggests that some of those who pursued the Amagi Challenge by asking her out are married by now, and pities the women who married boys who consider them their second choice after a high school crush.
  • Theme Naming: Nanako and her new friends have given names from characters in Dear Brother and surnames from the student council first-years in Bloom Into You.
