This work contains examples of:

  • Abled in the Adaptation: All Might doesn’t seem to have his canon crippling injuries or time limit.
  • Adaptational Job Change: Hisashi now works as UA Day Dorm Manager.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Hisashi is a more constant and positive presence in his son’s life.
    • Izuku decides that he and Bakugo are no longer friends early on after getting his sword.
    • Itsuka is closer to Izuku and Ochako due to befriending them during the entrance exam.
    • Class 1A is now composed of Camie, Pony, Momo, Itsuka, Tōru, Ochako, Asui, Mina, Jirō, Sero, Kirishima, Iida, Bakugō, Tokoyami, Aoyama, Shinsō, Kaminari, Shōto, Shōji, & Izuku. Aizawa also specifies that Class 1A & 1B are only divided for teaching regular school subjects effectively & that during Swordmaster Training that they are all comrades. May develop differently in the future.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: It's mentioned that Mirio & Tamaki are dating during the UA staff talk while there is no indication of this relationship beyond friendship in canon.
  • Alternate Universe: In this universe, instead of people developing quirks until 80% of all people gained one, people gained spirit swords in their sleep and make up 10% of the total population.
  • By the Power of Grayskull! / Calling Your Attacks: Shikai releases & Techniques
    • Aizawa - Ubae (Deprive), Hakudatsu no Hikari (Light of Deprivation)
    • Recovery Girl - Chūnyū suru (Inject)
    • All Might - Shin'en kara tachiagare (Rise from the Abyss), Suiryū Sensatsugiri. (Water Dragon, Thousand Flying Needles Cut.)
  • Cape Busters: The Guilds train sword masters to destroy Mask Spirits, but the most notable is the UN’s Mask Elimination Unit for the most dangerous or elusive targets.
  • Color Motif: Each person has a unique reiatsu color. Bakugo (red brown), Izuku (green white)
  • Cool Old Guy: Izuku’s Zanpakuto appears in a white cloak with this kind of voice as well as red eyes and white gauntlets.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Hisashi’s workplace is shown to be filled with these once they’re put under investigation for poor working conditions. These types of Black Companies are considered breeding grounds for Mask Spirits.
  • Custom Uniform: Apparently killing 500 Mask Spirits & Rogues earns the right for a Swordmaster to customize their uniform.
  • Cutting the Knot: During Aizawa’s Shikai Test, Izuku simply knocks the staff out of his hand to end the effect when Jinzen doesn’t work.
  • Die or Fly: Battle Awoken are people who awaken their Spirit Swords when in life threatening danger like All Might and Izuku. It’s so rare that it only occurs in 1% of all cases, the last time in Japan was over 30 years prior and it's more common in underdeveloped countries.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Bakugo wouldn’t break the law by pulling his sword against other people even if he wanted to.
    • Aizawa is a hardass on his students but even he is disgusted by Zuiun.
    • Shikai use in the school is prohibited without explicit supervision even when training at UA to prevent accidents.
  • Foreshadowing: All Might and Nedzu notices how a Mask Spirit is much more dangerous than it should have been and consider whether someone with a unique sword could have done it in spite of losing his hands.
    • Izuku’s Zanpakuto has a name with 8 characters, and he mentions Bakugo’s sword having 5 characters.
    • During the entrance exam Itsuka momentarily hears some kind of incomplete soundless song.
  • Functional Magic: Spiritual Formations which involve inscribing scripture on an object & charging with reiryoku to enforce rules in a designated area.
  • Giant Medical Syringe: Recovery Girl’s Zanpakuto Jihi no Otome (Maiden of Mercy) allows her to inject spirit energy into others to heal them.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Kan to Aizawa when training the students
  • Good Parents: Hisashi is willing to quit his job once he hears his son nearly died. Also Inko as in canon.
  • Immoral Journalist: All Might warns Izuku about these type of people who want to trick Sword Masters into revealing details about their abilities or Inner World which could be used to psychoanalyze them.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Bakugo’s power goes to his head and becomes a total dick to everyone especially Izuku.
    • All Might still ends up saving Izuku at the underpass from a sludge monster and ends up training him.
    • All Might inflicted crippling if not life threatening injuries on his arch nemesis.
    • Izuku still accepts Ochako calling him Deku by giving it a good meaning.
  • In the Blood: Sword Masters who have a lineage are called Legacies.
  • Large Ham: Mirio’s entrance is to drop down from the ceiling while screaming ‘POWER’
  • Making a Splash: All Might’s Zanpakuto Ryūjinmaru (Dragon Man Circle) has this ability and can erode anything hit over time.
  • Meditation Powerup: Jinzen serves as this with variations of sitting or exercise while blocking out the world.
  • Me's a Crowd: Ectoplasm’s Zanpakuto Bunshin allows him to create copies of himself and anyone he’s encountered making them identical even in spirit senses.
  • Mythology Gag: A young boy who gains a magic sword that appears as an old man in a cloak. Think Ichigo and Zangetsu would get along with them?
    • Unintentional, but the C-S ranking system can actually be compared to the grading system in Bleach Soul Ignition/Resurreccion (blue green red gold).
  • Noodle Incident: There was apparently a large-scale civil war between 2 different classes of a Swordmaster School that resulted in it shutting down.
    • While Swordmasters & Guilds are considered part of the JSDF the latter don’t have real control over them due to a cock up 150 years ago.
  • Now What?: After defeating his arch-enemy All Might really doesn’t know what to do with his life even with the help of others until he decides to train Izuku.
  • Power Levels: Swordmasters and Mask Spirits have 4 ranks.
    • C rank Basic (weak or basic spirit energy reserves), B Intermediate (large reserves and Shikai), A Advanced (overwhelming reserves and Bankai), S Master (hasn’t been specified but are clearly on another level). The rankings mostly indicate potential that they could reach and it is possible to reach a higher rank over time. It is also meant to organize types of techniques that can be effectively learned based on cost & necessary control to work. UA’s standards & curriculum needs Swordmasters at least Rank B or higher to effectively learn techniques.
    • Class 1 (newly formed, can usually be dispatched by a single C graduate while an older one could take a team of 10 C or 1 B rank), 2 (more intellect, abilities, and power, usually takes 2-3 B ranks to beat or a single skilled B-A rank), 3 (nightmare able to destroy cities in rampage, requires entire guilds to hold off for evacuation and gathering as many A ranks as possible), 4 (living natural disaster able to destroy nations requiring intervention of global A and S ranks). They grow stronger and evolve by devouring large amounts of normal people or swords masters, though it’s unknown how a class 4 is formed.
  • Power Nullifier: Aizawa’s Zanpakuto Chidama Sango (Blood Coral Crystal) is a long staff of dark orange coral with a red crystal orb with a spiky darker red coral within that can do this with Hakudatsu no Hikari (Light of Deprivation)
  • Rule of Symbolism: Spirit Swords and Inner Worlds are deeply personal to their wielder & represent important things to them.
    • Izuku’s Inner World is a valley of mountains with each peak representing his relationships and the weather his emotions. When he finally accepts that Bakugo is no longer his friend, the hollow mountain finally collapses into a grave like structure of rubble.
    • Mask Spirits are Spirit Swords that were rejected by their wielder and embody their negative emotions. It’s mentioned how some swords don’t appear due to bullying or being unable to change something in their life. Izuku’s sword only came out when he was willing to fight for his life.
    • The kendogi worn by senior Swordmasters have a red stripe to symbolize having taken the lives of Mask Spirits & Rogue Swordmasters.
  • Sadist: Zuiun Seiran is this to rookie prodigies and a Hope Crusher.
  • Secret Test of Character/Hidden Purpose Test: Aizawa seems fond of these, with the Shikai test being meant to have people think outside of relying on their Shikai. He also plans to have Izuku & Bakugo fight sooner after noticing their animosity & feels it better to have it done now in a controlled environment & get insight into how far they’ll go or react in a fight.
  • Shout-Out: Mask Spirits are the Spirit Sword that the wielder has rejected due to being unable to accept part of their mentalit-, wait is this a Persona turned Shadow?
  • Sizeshifter: Takeyama Yū’s sword Kyojinhei (Giant Soldier) has her ability to grow super large from canon and seemingly grants the Required Secondary Powers of super strength or ignoring weight.
  • Strong and Skilled: UA’s training methods are intended to give their students solid skill in swordsmanship compared to Ketsubetsu and Shiketsu who focus on getting Shikai first.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Bakugo has made a less than positive impact on his class combined with what Izuku mentions about him. Even Aizawa notices this.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Crossing over with Bring It. Izuku gives a pointed one to Bakugo at how he doesn’t know what it means to be a real Swordsmaster due to everybody kissing up to him & challenges him to try at UA.
  • Troll: Hisashi enjoys messing with people when he knows things they don’t.
    • Nedzu to Aizawa by forcing him to attend orientation & stealing his sleeping bags.
