More than Meets the Eye is a Pokémon: The Series fanfiction written by FoxBlueReaver
. It can be read here and here. Has two sequels, Feelings and Desires (WARNING: NSFW) and Sacrifices for Love.
This fic contains examples of:
- Author Appeal: Ash and Misty end up together at the end of Chapter 3. This fic being written by someone who was an anime fan since the beginning, it comes as no surprise.
- Awful Truth: Upon realizing Ash's suspicions of Chris being a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing are correct, Misty enters a Heroic BSoD.
- Batman Gambit: In Chapter 3, Ash suspected Chris will try to get back at Misty for calling off their engagement during the Whirl Cup, so he lend her his Greninja. He also knew Chris would accuse Misty of cheating, so he made sure he lend Greninja via trading.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Chris first appears to be a Nice Guy and a lover of Water Type Pokemon. However, it’s revealed he’s actually a Gold Digger that wants to take over the Cerulean Gym.
- Bitch Slap: When she breaks up with Chris, Misty gives him one for kicking Pikachu.
- Cassandra Truth: The first time Ash tries to tell Misty Chris may be a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, she doesn't believe him. Unlike most examples, though, she did realize Ash was right before it was too late.
- Cheaters Never Prosper: Defied. In order to make sure him lending Misty his Greninja won’t be counted as cheating, Ash traded Greninja for Misty’s Psyduck.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Brock implies Lucy is this. That, or he’s now ashamed of his past as a Casanova Wannabe.Brock, when Ash asks him about his list of celebrity crushes: “Shhh, not so loud! If Lucy finds that one out I’m a dead man!”
- Comic-Book Time: Averted. Ash and co. are older in this fic. The first two chapters are stated to take place at least three years after the anime’s Kalos saga, the third chapter takes place two years after the first two, and Ash mentions Lana in it, showing the Alola saga took place before the third chapter, and Feelings and Desires takes place a year after the third chapter, with the events of Sacrifices for Love taking place in that last year. The fic has Misty about to be married, so they have to be at least eighteen as to avoid
Unfortunate Implications. However, it is unknown whether the anime’s Alola saga took place before or after the first two chapters. - Evil-Detecting Dog: More like Evil Detecting Electric Mouse, but still, when Ash suspects that Misty’s fiancé Chris is the guy he overheard in the café that wants to take over the Cerulean Gym, he turns to Pikachu, who also saw the guy, for confirmation, and Pikachu confirms it to be the case.
- Gold Digger: Chris wants to take over the Cerulean Gym so he could have the gym’s income. He also was only dating his previous two girlfriends for their money.
- Hit Me, Dammit!: Non-hit example. After realizing Ash was right being suspicious on Chris, Misty asks Ash to tell him "I told you so".
- Humiliation Conga: Ash puts Chris through one, twice. The first time, he records their conversation, which reveals Chris as a Bitch In Sheep’s Clothing, and “accidentally” posted it all over the internet. The second time, two years later, Ash trades his Greninja for Misty’s Psyduck for the Whirl Cup in order for Misty so Misty could get some catharsis after how Chris toyed with her heart, and when Chris accuses Misty of cheating by using a Pokemon that’s not hers, Ash humiliates Chris even further by explaining it’s not cheating if she got that Outsider Pokemon via trade.
- I Am Not Weasel: Chris calls Pikachu an “accursed rat with hepatitis” when the latter bites the former’s hand. Pikachu is known as “The Electric Mouse Pokemon”, so while mice and rats are related species, calling a mouse, and by extension Pikachu, a rat is incorrect. And last time Ash checked, Pikachu does not have hepatitis.
- I Hate Past Me: A possible interpretation of Brock stating that he’s a dead man if Lucy finds his list of celebrity crushes is that, now that he finally settled down to someone, he doesn’t like his stint as a Cassanova Wannabe.
- I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: Deconstructed. Ash let Misty down three years before the fic because he didn’t want to ruin their friendship. However, that broke Misty and allowed Chris to toy with her heart.
- Innocently Insensitive: After Misty breaks up with Chris, Ash admits he should have chosen his words more carefully when he tried to warn her about Chris. Misty states that she would have believed Ash or at least given him the benefit of doubt if Ash told her from the get-go that the families of Chris's ex-girlfriends tried to sue him.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy:
- Deconstructed with Ash letting down Misty. Ash didn’t want his and Misty’s feelings for each other to ruin their friendship. This led to the main conflict of the fic, and Ash and Misty never stopped loving each other.
- Serena plays the trope straight, as she knows Ash loves Misty and lets go of her feelings.
- I Warned You: Invoked; once Chris's true colors are revealed to Misty, she tells Ash to tell him "I told you so".
- Kick the Dog: Chris stomps on a special lure Misty made for him when Ash finds him out.
- An almost literal example (it’s an Electric Mouse that’s kicked instead of a dog) is when Chris kicks Pikachu for biting his hand.
- The Dog Bites Back: And then Ash breaks Chris’s nose, Pikachu bites Chris’s hand, and Misty, having seen the whole thing and realized Ash was right about Chris being a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, calls off the wedding.
- Let's Wait a While: After Misty broke up with Chris, Ash decided to wait a while before he starts dating Misty so he won’t feel like he’s taking advantage of her while she’s vulnerable, like Chris did. Once Misty felt she left Chris far away behind enough (it helped that she humiliated him at the Whirl Cup), she and Ash have a Relationship Upgrade.
- Relationship Upgrade: At the end of the main fic, Ash and Misty become a couple.
- Sacred First Kiss: Despite Misty getting along with Serena, they still argue which one of them was the one who got Ash’s first kiss. While Misty did kiss Ash while giving him CPR, Serena was the first to kiss him on the lips with romantic intent (Melody and Latias did kiss Ash with romantic intent, but on the cheeks).
- Their First Time: Ash and Misty have sex for the fist time in Feelings and Desires.
