Contains examples of...

  • Adaptational Heroism: Akoya Seishu is much nicer to Hiyama Shunka, whom he has married, and is a lot less Ax-Crazy than canon. However, he still retains his obsessive dedication to justice, dedicating large amounts of time to investigating Niko's past and immediately questioning his wife if Izuku has any signs of abuse so he can investigate the Tokita household.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed; Izuku is overall more aggressive and cocky from his upbringing under Tokita Niko but he still retains his noble qualities and social awkwardness from canon.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Cosmo Imai possesses snake-related abilities under his Quirk Serpent, including great flexibility, wall-climbing, and the ability to shed his skin.
    • Ichiro Nakata's Razor's Edge is changed from a self-taught skill derived from his grip strength into a Quirk of its own.
    • Baki's Hanma family abilities manifest themselves as a bloodline Quirk while he himself has the ability to alter the size of his muscles.
  • Badass Normal: The overall goal for Izuku's training revolves around making him this by making him a master at the Niko Style of martial arts. It proves remarkably successful when he enters UA.
  • Berserk Button:
    • For Tokita Niko, anything that is related to his former brother is sure to piss him off, with Shunka just mentioning it causing Niko to smash the wall of the room they were in.
    • Mitsuyo Kureshi is none too pleased to learn that some of his students have been using the skills they learned from him to bully those weaker than them since he founded his dojo with the intent of giving those unable to fight back a safe space for them to grow and get stronger in.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Niko shows up during the USJ attack after Tenya manages to notify him of what's going on
  • Death by Adaptation: Hizashi and Inko are killed in a Villain attack while they take Izuku out on a shopping trip to the mall to lift his spirits.
  • Dirty Business: Niko hates the Inside with every fiber of his being and is reluctant to leave Izuku there for an entire year, but he knows that only by giving Izuku his trial by fire can he have a chance to get strong enough to take care of himself.
  • Fantastic Ableism: The prejudice that the Quirkless face is nuanced, zig-zagging this trope. Izuku fled into the streets and fended for himself for a year, and when Niko went to formally adopt him, the caretaker brings up Izuku's Quirklessness as a reason not to adopt him. Akoya's reaction to learning that Izuku is Quirkless is to ask more fervently if he had any signs of abuse from Niko, implying that Quirkless children are more likely to be abused. However, he also notes that there are Quirkless officers on the force, implying that the Quirkless can still find honest work.
  • Happily Adopted: Izuku is adopted by Tokita Niko after a year on the streets.
  • Happily Married: Akoya and Shunka are both in a loving, stable marriage that is a far cry from the toxic, unhealthy devotion Shunka had towards Akoya from canon.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Baki warns Karla that she's in for a bad time if she so much as looks at his girlfriend (who is all but implied to be Kozue Matsumoto) funny after their first day of class at UA.
  • Lethal Chef: Karla's lunch from home is an inedible mess that she created when she decided to mix natto, frozen fried rice, frozen chicken, and sausages together. It's bad enough for Izuku to offer her his own lunch just so she doesn't have to fill herself with that horrible combination.
  • Papa Wolf: No one messes with Tokita Niko's loved ones unless they have a death wish.
  • Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: Defied; Niko explicitly tells Izuku that he needs an education and has a friend act as Izuku's tutor so Izuku can study and continue dedicating large amounts of time to training.
  • Seen It All: By the time Bakugo tries accosting Izuku when they reunite, Izuku is merely unimpressed with Bakugo's attempts to come off as tough since he himself had seen far worse during the year he spent within the Inside.
  • Ship Tease: Plenty between Nemuri Kayama and Tokita Niko.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Mitsuyo Kureshi tears his students a new one after he learns that they have been using his teachings to bully others weaker than them, especially Quirkless people like Izuku.
    • Izuku verbally dissects Bakugo when the explosive teen tries accosting him, calling him out on his entitled, arrogant behavior and telling him that he's not putting up with his stupidity anymore.
  • Would Hurt a Child: A gang of teenage bullies beat up Izuku when he is five. Some are more reluctant than others.
