Harry Potter had always led a miserable life. That was before his best friend and godfather had their souls sucked out by demons right in front of him. As if things weren’t bad enough, he suddenly finds himself in the year 1942. Things only become more complicated when, among others, an enigmatic prodigy fixes her unwavering attention upon him.

This fic provides examples of:

  • Accidental Murder: Harry accidentally kills Antonin Dolohov by using a powerful lightning spell which results in an explosion and the ceiling collapsing on the latter.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: In canon Harry's grandparents are Fleamont and Euphemia Potter, whereas here they are Charlus Potter and Dorea Black.
  • The Ageless: The epilogue reveals that Harry hasn't physically aged a day ever since the Battle of Hogwarts. He still looks 15 despite being 52. Whether this is due to being in possession of all the Deathly Hallows or something else entirely, we don't know.
  • Alternate Universe / Time Travel: The main premise of the story is that Harry gets sent to an alternate reality, which is pretty much the same as his original reality with a few minor changes. Though instead of being sent to an alternate 1994, he instead gets sent back to an alternate 1942.
  • Asshole Victim: Abraxas Malfoy, Nero Macnair, Aiden Burke, Antonin Dolohov, Edward Nott, and Gellert Grindelwald.
  • Back Story: Harry and Slughorn create a new one for the former in order for him to fit into the new world he's found himself in (though even Slughorn doesn't know that Harry comes from another reality). He was a European-born wizard who had spent much of his youth in America, where he attended Ilvermorny. His two half-blood parents were initially British — hence his accent — but had raised him in America. In the last year, they had moved to Scandinavia for work, but both of them had died during a raid in Helsinki orchestrated by Grindelwald and his forces, after which Harry finds himself back in Britain.
  • Child Prodigy: Both Harry and Emily fit this category.
  • Continuity Nod: In Chapter 11, Harry and Emily are introduced to European duelling champion, Wilbert Slinkhard, by Slughorn during a Slug Club party. He is the author of the book that Dolores Umbridge uses to teach her DADA class in canon Book 5: The Order of the Phoenix.
  • Death by Adaptation: Rubeus Hagrid.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Frustrated at being unable to beat Harry in a duel, Antonin Dolohov attempts to hit him with the Entrail Expelling Curse... in front of the professor overseeing the duel. He ends up with a full years worth of detentions.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • In canon, Abraxas Malfoy dies as an old man, married, with a son and grandson. In this story he gets killed by Cerastes the basilisk under the orders of Emily Riddle whilst a 7th year Hogwarts student.
    • In canon, an already dying Albus Dumbledore gets killed by Severus Snape so that the latter can prove his loyalty to Voldemort. In this story he gets killed by Gellert Grindelwald during a fight at Hogsmeade in 1943.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Antonin Dolohov spends over a year wanting to kill Harry before eventually attempting to do so, all for simply beating him in a classroom duel.
  • Distant Finale: The epilogue takes place 37 years after the previous chapter.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": On the advice of Horace Slughorn, Harry changes his first name to Hadrian due to him thinking Harry sounds too "muggle". Despite this, Harry still insists on being called Harry, as he isn't too keen on his new name.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Gellert Grindelwald: the current Dark Lord at large.
    • Emily Riddle, to everyone she doesn't have wrapped around her little finger.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Abraxas Malfoy reaches the conclusion that Emily Riddle is a powerful, yet ultimately harmless mudblood who doesn't have what it takes to be ruthless. On the other hand, he thinks that Hadrian Pavonis (Harry Potter) is going to end up as the biggest threat to Britain since Emeric the Evil. He changes his tune in the very last moments of his life, when Emily breaks past the wards to the boys dorm room, puts Abraxas under the imperius curse, and orders him to go to the second floor girl's bathroom and look into the eyes of a basilisk.
  • Fate Worse than Death: In the original reality that Harry comes from, both Sirius and Hermione have their souls sucked out by the Dementors. This leaves them in a permanent vegetative state.
  • Gender Flip: In the new reality Harry gets sent to, Tom Riddle is a woman called Emily Riddle.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: Harry gets his eyesight fixed at the insistance of Slughorn. The procedure is done by American alchemist, Reginald Edward Gress.
  • Happily Adopted: Harry gets taken in by the Fawley family, and is treated much better by them than he ever was with the Dursleys.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite all the various changes that took place in the story, we find out in the epilogue that Charlus and Dorea still got married, had James, who then went on to marry Lily and have a son called Harry together.
  • Internal Reveal: In Chapter 60, Charlus finds out that Harry is his grandson from an alternate future.
  • Loophole Abuse: When Harry sent himself back in time to before he was even born, he should have been wiped out of existence. Instead when the universe tried to kill Harry for meddling with time, the horcrux in his scar acted as a shield, and it was destroyed instead of Harry. Due to this Harry is then given a choice to either die and move on, or be sent to an alternate reality. He chooses the latter.
  • Mad Scientist: Reginald Edward Gress.
  • Meaningful Rename: Harry Potter changes his name to Hadrian Pavonis. He chooses that surname to honor his godfather, Sirius Black, since the Black family often name their children after stars or constellations.
  • Mentor Archetype:
    • Emily Riddle helps catch Harry up on Ancient Runes, due to him being a full year behind when enrolling at Hogwarts in 1942.
    • After noticing Harry's talent for his subject, Transfiguration professor, Albus Dumbledore, offers to give him private lessons on the subject, with the goal to get him to a NEWT standard by the end of his 4th year at Hogwarts.
  • Not So Stoic: The normally composed Emily Riddle breaks down after realising she can't gain access to Salazar Slytherin's statue in the Chamber of Secrets.
  • Number Two: Cassiopeia Black is this to Emily in their group of Slytherins.
  • Original Character: There are many of them, due to there not being many canon characters from the 1940s, which is when this story is set.
  • Patricide: Emily Riddle kills her father, Tom Riddle, who she blames for abandoning her before she was even born.
  • Ret-Gone: With the deaths of Abraxas Malfoy, Edward Nott, Romulus Lestrange, Nero Macnair, and Cole Flint, that means Lucius Malfoy, Draco Malfoy, Theodore Nott, Rodolphus Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange, Walden Macnair, and Marcus Flint are never going to be born.
  • Scars Are Forever: Despite the horcrux in him being destroyed before travelling to the alternate reality, Harry still keeps his signature lightning bolt scar.
  • Secret Identity:
    • Harry takes the name Hadrian Pavonis due to being unable to go by Harry Potter anymore. Though he still insists everyone calls him Harry.
    • Reginald Edward Gress is actually Nicolas Flamel.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Myrtle Warren.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Both Emily Riddle and Hadrian Pavonis (Harry Potter) can speak parseltongue.
  • Strong Family Resemblance:
    • Whilst on the Hogwarts express, Harry instantly recognises some of the students from their strong resemblance to students from his time. For example, he recognises Abraxas Malfoy, Edward Nott, and the various members of the Black family from their resemblance to Draco Malfoy, Theodore Nott, and Sirius Black respectively.
    • Harry thinks this about himself after seeing his grandfather, Charlus Potter, at Hogwarts.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Chapter 3 ends with Harry meeting Emily Riddle.
    • Chapter 12 reveals that Harry went down to the Chamber of Secrets before Emily got the chance and claimed both the title Heir of Slytherin and control of the basilisk, Cerastes, for himself.
    • Chapter 22 ends with Emily publicly revealing herself as a parselmouth to the entire Slytherin common room after getting into a confrontation with Malfoy, Nott, Parkinson, and Travers, and then wandlessly banishing the former two into a wall.
    • Chapter 32 ends with Harry finding the dead body of Abraxas Malfoy in the second floor girl's bathroom.
    • Chapter 33 reveals that Cerastes has been working with both Harry and Emily without the other knowing, all for the benefit of them both. The chapter ends with Emily telling Harry of her plan to have Abraxas framed as the Heir of Slytherin, who she killed in self-defence.
    • Chapter 35 ends with Emily killing off the entire Riddle family. She then attempts to made a horcrux using the death of her father, but fails due to caring too much about Harry and therefore not meeting the specific requirements needed to create a horcrux.
    • Chapter 45 has Harry, Emily, and Charlus facing off against Grindelwald in Hogsmeade and being terribly outmatched. The chapter ends with Dumbledore joining the fight, and dying to Grindelwald's fiendfyre.
    • Chapter 46 ends with Emily kissing Harry for the first time.
    • Chapter 50 ends with Harry accidentally killing someone (Dolohov) for the first time.
  • Word of God: The author has confirmed that the pairing is going to be Harry Potter/Emily Riddle. The real mystery is how they end up together.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In 1981, Harry sacrifices the one year old version of himself in a ritual to resurrect Emily.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Harry's reaction to finding out he's been sent to a reality/time with a female Tom Riddle, and then a few chapters later when he realises he's going to be stuck in Slytherin with her for a few years.
