Disparate Pieces is a Star Wars fanfic written by space_trash_princess.

Kylo Ren finds Rey eight weeks after she lands on Ach-to, not long after killing Emperor Snoke and declaring himself Emperor. Kylo has a proposal for Rey: He will allow the resistance to keep Hoth and all other remaining Republic territories, declare a permanent ceasefire, and return all prisoners currently being housed by the First Order back to their friends and families.

In exchange, Rey will stay with Kylo and become his apprentice... and companion.

The fic can be read here.

Disparate Pieces provides the following tropes:

  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • Rey's childhood (before and on Jakku) is explored in more detail, as is Ben Solo's to a lesser extent.
    • The fate of Rey’s parents is explored more thoroughly.
    • Darth Vader's castle on Mustafar is built on the ancient remains of a Sith temple.
    • Hux’s father was involved with Stormtrooper training during the old Empire.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Rey's surname in this fic is Andara rather than Palpatine or Skywalker.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head:
    • Vassik (the doctor who delivers Lyris) gives Lyris a pat on the head while saying his goodbyes to Ben and Rey.
    • Chewie pats Lyris on the head after she attempts to speak Shyriiwook.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Rey often addresses Lyris as "Starlight".
  • An Arm and a Leg: Kylo Ren loses his right arm (already damaged by Rey from their fight on Starkiller base) to a blaster bolt, necessitating its amputation.
  • Artificial Limbs: After his right arm is amputated, Kylo gains an artificial arm. He later loses said arm.
  • Assassination Attempt / Villainous Rescue: A stormtrooper attempts to murder Rey with a blaster, only for Kylo to save her at the last second.
  • The Atoner: Sev (a former Stormtrooper on Coruscant) escapes and joins the Resistance as penance for his years of service.
  • Baby's First Words: Lyris's first word is "Pa".
  • Bear Hug: Chewie gives one to Ben after he tells him that he's proud of him.
  • Bite of Affection: Rey bites Ben on his shoulder as part of their lovemaking after arriving on Kashyyyk.
  • Blindfolded Trip: A variation occurs when Kylo gets a cloth bag over his head while en route to a holding cell at the Resistance base.
  • Blood Transfusion Plot: Kylo serves as Rey's blood donor when Rey goes into premature labor due to a placental abruption.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Hux's dropped code cylinder is picked up by Rey and later used to gain access to an Imperial facility.
  • Child by Rape: Lyris, as she was conceived in circumstances of Questionable Consent.
  • The Coup: Hux stages one against Kylo.
  • Credit Chip: Kylo has an untraceable one that’s used to purchase things on Cendril and later used to help fund the Resistance.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Rey wears a black dress with black gems upon arriving on Coruscant.
  • Deer in the Headlights: Finn becomes paralyzed with shock and fear when he encounters Ben on Kashyyyk.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In canon, Leia dies when she uses her force powers to keep her son alive long enough to help Rey defeat Palpatine. Here she's killed at the base on Hoth when Hux orders it to be bombarded.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Part of a nightmare Rey has shortly before giving birth to Lyris involves her daughter being carried out of flames by an unknown male figure. Towards the end of the fic, this part of her dreams comes true.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: A few Resistance members preparing for a raid on an Imperial facility wear stolen imperial uniforms.
  • The Emperor: Kylo becomes the new Emperor after killing Emperor Snoke, only for Hux to claim the title of Emperor in a coup. By the end of the fic, the title of Emperor has been returned to Ben Solo.
  • Flower Motifs: The Lyris flower crops up a couple times as a metaphor for good and strong things coming out of a bad situation.
  • Freakiness Shame: Downplayed with Kylo, who grew his hair out as a child to cover up his ears.
  • Friend to All Children: Children (and credits) are among the few things that Vassik cares for.
  • Frontier Doctor: Vassik works as a doctor on Cendril, a moon in the Outer Rim.
  • Gem-Encrusted: The outfits that Rey and Kylo wear when arriving on Coruscant are encrusted with black gems.
  • Gilded Cage: Rey regards her stay at the Imperial Palace on Coruscant as such.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It's implied that Kylo is jealous of Rey's friendship with Finn.
  • Healing Spring: Kylo and Rey bathe in one. Justified, since the heat and minerals promote muscle regeneration and improve blood flow.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Kylo undergoes one after finding out that Rey is pregnant and after the death of his mother.
  • Holding Hands: Rey holds Kylo's hands after he confesses that he regrets killing his father.
  • Intimate Hair Brushing: A variant occurs between Malla and Waroo, as the former grooms and pulls out burrs and twigs from the latter’s fur.
  • King Incognito: Rey (The Emperor's mistress) leaves the palace on Coruscant to experience the greater city without wearing makeup or fancy dresses and goes unrecognized by the general populace.

  • Light Is Not Good: Hux is the fic's main antagonist and wears white as Emperor.
  • Meaningful Name: Lyris's name is chosen in reference to the Lyris flowers that were present at the hot spring where she was likely conceived, as well as being a good thing that came out of a bad situation (like the Lyris growing in the bowels of a Sith castle).
  • Meaningful Rename: Kylo Ren goes back to using his original name of Ben Solo after Lyris is born.
  • Metaphorical Marriage: Ben "marries" Rey with the Japor snippet that Anakin carved for Padmé.
  • Never Recycle a Building: The Resistance uses the old Rebel base on Hoth as their base of operations.
  • Orbital Bombardment: Gentry fires the super weapon of a mothership down on Coruscant with the intent of killing both Ben and Hux. A large part of the palace is destroyed, and Hux is killed when the ceiling collapses.

  • Patchwork Kids: Lyris has Rey's eyes and Ben’s hair.
  • Pet the Dog: Even before his proper Heel–Face Turn, Kylo decides to dissolve the Stormtrooper program with the intent of making reparations to those personally affected by the program.
  • Physical Therapy Plot: Finn needs to undergo physical therapy after fighting with Kylo on Starkiller base.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Of the dresses described, one is encrusted with black gems and has a gauzy skirt while the other garments are described as being “beaded”.

  • Shrine to the Fallen: Kylo has one consisting of items significant to Darth Vader, such as his helmet and Anakin's lightsaber.

  • Slasher Smile: The enforcer smiles morbidly before interrogating Poe.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:

    • In The Rise of Skywalker, Kylo Ren dies while fighting Palpatine. Here he survives through the end of the story.
  • Spiteful Spit: Poe spits blood on the enforcer's boots in response to being asked where the Resistance’s base is and who sent him.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Rey is so absorbed in looking for clothing that she fails to notice Kylo until his artificial arm joins hers in a basket of clothes.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: Averted, Rey falls in love with Ben after their deal is called off.

  • Surprise Pregnancy: Rey discovers that she’s pregnant with Lyris five months into her pregnancy.
