Fanfic / Danganronpa The PARALLEL

Go To

Danganronpa The PARALLEL is a series of fanfics written by Archive of Our Own user Lycoris_Aurea. It is a Role Swap AU where Class 78 becomes the remnants of despair rather than Class 77. There is currently only one story, Danganronpa: Parallel Island, going over the alternate version of The Killing School Trip.

May contain spoilers for the franchise, including Trigger Happy Havoc, Goodbye Despair, The End of Hope's Peak Academy, and Danganronpa Zero.

Danganronpa The PARALLEL as a whole provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Heroism: Most of Class 77, seeing as they do not become remnants of despair.
  • Adaptational Villainy: The majority of Class 78, by extension.
  • Role Swap AU: With a twist. In here, Class 78 is forced to participate in the Killing School Trip. In addition to the initial class switch, four characters from Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School have been included as participants, consisting of Koichi Kizakura, Kyosuke Munakata, Ruruka Ando, and Ryota Mitarai.
    • Unusually for this kind of role swap fic, aside from Usami/Monomi, Chiaki is the only character besides Izuru occasionally popping in via monologues from the second cast to stay, serving as the protagonist alongside Mukuro.
  • Third-Person Person: Ruruka, as was the case in the original Japanese.

Tropes in Danganronpa: Parallel Island include:

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed with Chiaki. While she still retains some elements of being the Nice Girl she usually is, she also comes across as having some Deadpan Snarker tendencies, often quipping about certain situations. In addition to that, she is also shown to be significantly less tolerant with her companions' antics compared to her canon self. This is best exemplified in the case of the petty rivalry between Celeste and Ruruka and later on, the initial rivalry between Mondo and Taka.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Mukuro in canon is an accomplice to the mastermind. In here, she's one of the protagonists who in fact, opposes the killing game this time around.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In contrast with his Knight Templar self in Future Arc, Kyosuke is a far more Reasonable Authority Figure who genuinely looks out for the students.
  • Adults Are Useless: Downplayed example. While it's clear that Kyosuke and Koichi are powerless against Big Bad Monokuma, nevertheless they still try to maintain order and prevent trouble as best they can.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: As in canon, the executions are nasty.
  • Death by Adaptation: Kyoko winds up becoming the first victim of the killing game, and Hiro is the culprit.
  • Declaration of Protection: Mondo makes one towards Chiaki.
Mondo: Tell you what, I’ll keep you safe if you ever get stuck in danger. It’s a promise as a man!
  • Freak Out: Koichi does not take Kyoko’s death well. Considering the promise he made with Jin to protect her, it's not hard to see why.
  • Not His Sled: Although Sayaka does try to frame Leon like she did in Trigger Happy Havoc, she is talked out of it in the end by Mukuro, preventing her from becoming the first victim. By extension, Leon does not end up becoming the first culprit because of that.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Taka accuses Kyoko, and a couple of sentences later on, Ryota as well, of having this trope in effect, due to their relations with Jin Kirigri (the current headmaster) and Kazuo Tengan (the former headmaster), respectively. Koichi clears up to him that this is most certainly not the case, though it doesn't convince Taka that much.
  • Stalker with a Crush: As per canon, Toko is this to Byakuya.
    • Implied with Izuru to Chiaki, judging by their monologues at the beginning of each in-game chapter, and the way they always end it with little variations of "You are mine. And I am yours."
