Averting The End
is a Star vs. the Forces of Evil Fix Fic created by LockAndKey989.
In an alternate timeline, the Magic High Commission discover the events of the canon series. Specifically, they are horrified to learn that whatever happened results in the Age of Magic coming to an end. This wouldn't be too bad — alternate timeline and all that — if it wasn't for the fact that their reality is 99% match for the one, meaning if they don't do something quick, their story will end in precisely the same way. Thankfully, Star hasn't even gone to Earth yet, so all they need to do is... get all the major players together at Marco's house to watch the events of the show in DVD form? Eh, as long as they avert the end.
Unlike most "watching the show" fics, the author only summarizes events from the episodes rather than insert scenes from the actual episode.
Tropes in the story:
- 0% Approval Rating: The Magic High Commission as a whole slowly gains this over the course of the viewing, thanks to their pigheaded and racist behavior. Hekapoo and Lekmet get this to a lesser extent since the former actually has a Heel Realization in both timelines, and Lekmet it's clarified opposed the more radical acts in the first place. As a result, the end of the viewing has them fired from their positions and forced into retirement.
- The Alliance: The timeskip at the end of the fic shows that the various nations, Earth included, have come together to form a new era of enlightenment, with various representatives present for Star's coronation. The Kingdom of Mewni now exists as two kingdoms, one of Mewmans formerly ruled by Moon & River then later Star & Marco, and one of Monsters ruled by Eclipsa and Globgor. The new Magic High Commission, consisting of elected representatives, now consists of Janna acting as forger of the Dimensional Scissors, and Alfonzo & Ferguson as co-enforcers of Order. Other notable Mewman and Monster lords include King Tom of the Underworld, Queen Ponyhead, Lady Penelope and Lord Slime of the Spiderbites, Yvgeny/Buff Frog, and Ludo & Dennis Avarius. Years later, the monarchy as a whole would give way to a more democratic form of government at Star's direction.
- Everyone Has Standards: Brittany Wong is a mean, selfish, snobby, vain, spoiled brat who seeks to create her own wand so she can upstage Star, but even she is disgusted with the Commission when they find out they crystalized Eclipsa just for falling inlove with a monster.
- Heel Realization: Watching the impacts of their actions and getting called out on it causes the High Commission and Moon to realize their views on monsters were wrong.
- Moon apologizes to Star for considering sending her to Saint Olga’s after seeing what it’s really like.
- Star gets over her Fantastic Racism towards monsters after seeing her canon self do it.
- "Let's Watch Our Show" Plot: The Butterfly Family, The High Commission, the Diaz’s and Echo Creek (minus Oscar) watch the cannon series.
- Mythology Gag: Several of the answers Glossaryck gives to the viewers at the end are quoted verbatim from the post series Reddit AMA.
- Not Quite the Right Thing: Star realizes destroying magic, though necessary in the other timeline due to the Solarian warriors and the realm being corrupted by the nameless spell, isn’t a good way of dealing with the issues of magic in her timeline. She also realizes giving Eclipsa the throne is this due to her blatant favorism of monsters. So instead Eclipsa is given her own wand and named queen of the Monsters while Moon gets to stay queen of the Mewmans.
- Official Couple: Star and Marco, Tom and Janna.
- Retired Monster: Unlike Hekapoo, Omnitraxus and Rhombulus show no definitive signs of having a Heel Realization, so their forced retirement comes off as this, with Omnitraxus now being Reynaldo's assistant, and Rhombulus acting as Lekmet's caretaker fulltime.
- Spared By Adaptation: At the end, magic isn’t destroyed because the main characters took steps to avoid the Solarian Crisis from happening, including depowering Mina with the Severing Stone. This means the Magic High Commission and Glossaryck are still alive, with Hekapoo retiring completely, Omnitraxus becoming Reynaldo's assistant, Rhombulus acting as Lekmet's caretaker full time, and Glossaryck deciding to fade away until another future Queen needs him one day. Toffee and Gemini are also still alive, with Gemini as the warden and Toffee as a prisoner of the reinvented Saint Olga’s Asylum.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Everyone calls out Moon when her screen self is revealed to be working with Mina and created the Solarian Warriors.
