Crosswicking new trope.

* TemporaryPartyMemberToVillain: Two of the {{Guest Star Party Member}}s available in the origin stories can be later encountered as antagonists:
** Jowan, from the Mage Origin, is revealed to be a blood mage at the end of said origin, and is encountered later as inadvertently helping cause a ZombieApocalypse at Redcliffe; his fate is left up to the player.
** Tamlen, from the Dalish Elf Origin, disappears after he and the player discover a tainted eluvian, and later appears as a ghoul who attacks the party camp with a bunch of darkspawn.

He is not named Bereskarn. He takes the *form* of a Bereskarn. His *name* is Sloth

* SleepyEnemy: In the quest, "The Harrowing", a [[PlayerCharacter Warden]] who picked the Circle Mage origin is tested in the [[EldritchLocation Fade]] with resisting the temptations of the spirits and demons that call the Fade home. Aided by a companion named Mouse, one such creature they encounter is a MiniBoss[=/=]EliteMook Sloth Demon named Bereskarn, who complains about being woken up by the two of them, and constantly yawns whenever the Warden speaks with him. He eventually agrees to teach Mouse how to shapeshift into a bear if the Warden correctly answers his riddles or defeats him in combat (and will automatically engage the two in combat if the Warden incorrectly guesses any of the riddles), and once the Warden has done so, he teaches Mouse how to assume his bear form, and then goes right back to sleep.

* UniversallyBelovedLeader:
** Party-wise, it is very possible to max out everyone's approval ratings through picking the right dialogue options in conversations, making the right decisions story-wise and giving the right gifts.
** The new king and/or queen of Ferelden can achieve this. If [[spoiler:a hardened Alistair]] marries Anora, for example, the people eventually consider the chaos of the civil war and Landsmeet worth it for delivering such beloved monarchs. If [[spoiler:a female Noble Warden marries Alistair]], they are wildly popular among their people; and if a [[spoiler:male Noble Warden]] marries Anora, Ferelden will enter what could become a new golden age.

* WasJustLeaving: The Warden's BadassBoast scares the leader of the Crimson Oars so much that he orders the Oars to retreat back to the docks after a stuttered use of this trope.
-->'''Warden''': Hundreds have died in my wake. You're just a number to me.\\
'''Crimson Oars Leader''': I, um... We... We were just leaving. Yes, Oars, we go to the docks!

* SappingTheShapeshifter: The mission "Lost In Dreams" ends with a massive boss battle with the Sloth Demon that trapped you in the Fade, during which Sloth assumes a different form every time you reduce his health to zero: an ogre, a rage demon, an abomination, a shade, and an arcane horror. Given the dream-specific shapeshifting powers you've unlocked here, it's entirely possible to play this as a ShapeshifterShowdown, but if you've gone to the trouble of rescuing your companions from their nightmares, it can be a simple matter of laboriously chiseling away at Sloth's health and shapes until he finally goes down.

* RankScalesWithAsskicking:
** Most of the Fereldan and Dwarven nobility. The Fereldan nobles are mostly descendants of barbarian warlords, so combat training is traditional, whereas a Dwarven noble needs to be skilled to defend against the assassins that are commonly employed in dwarven politics.
** Inverted by the Grey Wardens, as their most respected get creamed, while the cadets have to save the world.
** Averted by most of Ferelden, actually. The King and lords in charge bite the dust rather early, and the bad guys achieve their coup by deceit and cowardice. When the player does get a chance to face them, said villains aren't particularly challenging.

* SubterraneanSanityFailure:
** During your voyage through the [[TunnelNetwork Deep Roads]], you can stumble upon Ruck, a dwarven scavenger that's been left a paranoid, territorial wreck after weeks spent stranded in the underground ruins. Quite apart from spending most of that time alone, he's been surviving by eating the Darkspawn dead, becoming [[TheCorruption Tainted]] in the process.
** Hespith, one of the last surviving members of Branka's doomed expedition through the [[CreepyCave Dead Trenches]], can be found insanely chanting a [[IronicNurseryTune twisted nursery rhyme]]. Part of her apparent insanity is due to a strange illness that's left her delirious, but also due to trauma experienced down in the lowest reaches of the Deep Roads, for the poem is being used in a failing attempt to cope with the things she's had to endure - including being forced to eat several of her comrades. [[spoiler: She's actually being transformed into a Darkspawn [[MotherOfAThousandYoung Broodmother]], and she knows it; her friend, Laryn, has already completed her transformation and become an insane monstrosity - hence why Hespith [[BetterToDieThanBeKilled opts to kill herself rather than meet the same fate]].]]

* TerminalTransformation: Women infected with the [[TheVirus Darkspawn taint]] aren't transformed into [[OurGhoulsAreCreepier ghouls]] like most victims, but instead suffer hideous mutations that eventually transform them into [[MotherOfAThousandYoung Broodmothers]]. However, lore notes indicate that many would-be-Broodmothers end up dying of their mutations before they reach the final stage, hence why the Darkspawn are careful to keep the survivors out of harm's way despite their impressive strength. It's also why [[spoiler: only two women out of Branka's House have survived being converted by the Darkspawn: Hespith, who is beginning to transform, and Laryn, who is a full-fledged Broodmother.]]

* UnEntendre:
** A gem of banter between Alistair and Oghren where Oghren advises Alistair to relieve his stress by [[ADateWithRosiePalms "Polishing the old weapon, eh."]] Alistair is disgusted, but as the conversation goes on, it turns out Oghren ''is'' talking about polishing a weapon. Maybe.
** And between Oghren and Wynne, about Alistair's pike-twirling hobby. Mind you, it is exactly what it sounds like -- twirling a pike of the sort used to stick charging horses and such. Though, where Alistair ''found'' a pike...
** "Ever lick a lamppost in the winter?" Alistair is [[SarcasmMode surprised when the alternative meaning is pointed out.]]

* ThunderboltIron: A random encounter shows a meteor crater, where a couple of farmers find a [[{{Superman}} baby boy]] and adopt him. The player can take the remains of the meteor and give it to the blacksmith at [[spoiler:Soldier's Peak]] to be made into the most powerful sword in the main game (either a longsword or a greatsword) -- Starfang. The weapon has an exotic look and appears to glow.

* ScrewTheMoneyThisIsPersonal: The [[MultipleGameOpenings City Elf Origin]] lets you play this trope straight or subvert it when, at the end of your OriginsArc, you confront Bann Vaughn about raping your BestFriend Shianni and he offers you a substantial bribe to just walk away. Since this is a RolePlayingGame, the choice of whether you kill the man who violated your friend (as well as many other women he abducted from your home district) or take the money and [[VideoGameCrueltyPotential leave her in his clutches]] is up to you.

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome:
** The epilogue shows that a number of side quests and decisions can have unintended consequences.
*** If the Dalish Elves are recruited, they will be given lands to settle as thanks for their aid. However, tensions quickly arise with an independent elven state suddenly forming in the middle of human lands. Things deteriorate even faster if the Warden allies with the werewolves, who are given those lands instead.
*** If the traditionalist Lord Harrowmont is made king of Orzammar, he does nothing to combat the decline of dwarven society, maintaining the status quo. Prince Bhelen, who seems like an obvious case of AmbitionIsEvil meanwhile, makes numerous progressive changes, angering the nobility but greatly improving dwarven society as a whole.
*** Helping the dwarven priest establish a Chantry in Orzammar ends with its destruction and his death as citizens are outraged by him spreading foreign beliefs. The incident catches the larger Chantry's attention leading them to consider a holy war against the city.
** Non-ending wise, your party members are not blind followers who accept what you do with no issue. Each one has their own beliefs and values that shape how they feel about each action you do. There is no way to make everyone happy unless you use gameplay mechanics to constantly make them like you. Certain choices will effect the party members drastically, and some will even leave and fight you if you piss them off in ways that are offensive to them greatly. Most notably, Alistair, who is unquestionably the most loyal person in the group beyond your Mabari hound, will leave the party for good if you [[spoiler: spare Loghain, the man who was responsible for the deaths of the Wardens at Ostagar]].
** The Warden can't simply overthrow Loghain by just rallying an army to overthrow him, they have to defeat him politically as well. Not only is Loghain in control of most of the lands army, but there are many who still ally with him or trust him. Furthermore, fighting each other in open war will result in the Darkspawn finding it easier to overwhelm whoever is left. To defeat him, the Warden has to gather allies in the Landsmeet and gain their support, or else it turns into a bloodbath between all involved. Also, during the Landsmeet, the Warden has to call out Loghain on things that are deemed actually important; calling him out on things like the treatment of the elves might seem heroic, but the Landsmeet is not all that interested in that issue compared to dealing with the betrayal of the king at Ostagar.
