Hello, kind sir... I'm so glad you never met me.
  • Abusive Parents: Ardyn's parents were physically, emotionally and sexually abusive to him and his younger brother, Somnus, who in this setting he has forgotten.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Ardyn is primarily attracted to men... Through whatever shape that takes, through the lens of his troubled and broken sexuality. But sometimes he seems fonder of individual women than you would think is platonic.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Was given one by Bahamut as a very young man when he was granted the position of the Sage, which allowed him to heal the sick. What made it so impossible to refuse is that this offer meant a permanent escape from his horrific childhood home.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Ardyn got exactly what he wanted: the end of the Line of Lucis, his own death, and an unavoidable middle finger to the Astrals... But then he woke up in the theatre of Crescent Lake, and he has to figure out what his existence now means. He's not doing a fantastic job of this so far.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Ardyn is amicable and pleasant on the surface, but he's constantly scheming behind the backs of everyone - even his own party - and has no qualms acting against the best interest of the party to fulfill his own agenda.
  • Con Man: It's safe to assume that if Ardyn is speaking to you, there are about fifty things - plans, included - on his mind that he's not telling you about.
  • Cosmic Plaything: Ardyn was this in his source material, and clearly has some hard feelings about it. Trauma, even, referring to the Astrals' treatment of him as a sort of symbolic rape, and being visibly shaken while explaining some of his past situation to the party. Being a survivor of all sorts of abuse in his childhood, he's speaking from experience.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Above all else, Ardyn despises being treated like a victim, and he can't stand it when other people encourage him to let down his walls.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: In several senses.
    • Whenever anyone else in the party suggests the most morally good path forward, Ardyn rarely agrees. Not simply because he's a caricature of evil, but because he has conditioned himself to be evil so skillfully that he doesn't believe it's possible to do the right thing at all.
    • After all this time, he can't understand Mercy's feelings of affection for him, and seems to believe instead that Mercy feels entitled to him, or that Mercy expects something to him. Yet, on a deeper level, he feels some level of concern for him, in is own way. He may be onto something, though, when he worries aloud that Mercy is a codependent idiot who isn't taking care of himself.
  • Faux Affably Evil: At first, he came off to the party and the world around him as harmlessly menacing, but it became clear after his attempted assassination of King that he means business.
  • I Love You Because I Can't Control You: A platonic(?) instance of this is Ardyn's affection for Lenna.
  • The Sociopath: Both Ardyn's traumatic backstory and his own conditioning of himself has led him to lose all capacity for compassion or empathy for other people. That's not possible, dumbass. He's just terrified, after all this time, hiding behind walls he's built around himself from the very concept of understanding and being understood by another person.
  • Throwing Your Scythe Always Works: Ardyn's first thought during a fight is usually to close the distance between him and his enemy by warp-striking with his scythe.
  • Treachery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Being a victim of this from the Astrals, betrayal is a delicate art, meant to inflict the utmost emotional pain onto its victims, to Ardyn. His attempted assassination of King, for example, was so shocking and traumatic to King that it visibly shook the smug and self-assured master of Crescent Lake. Later, in non-canon material, King was depicted nearly having a teary-eyed mental breakdown over it due to the deep pain Ardyn had caused him.
    • "You stabbed me!"
  • Villain Has a Point: Ardyn hasn't become what he's become today through senseless adherence to evil. There's usually a healthy helping of truth and logic in most things he thinks and feels.
