"Peace demands sacrifices. I will do my part, I am counting on you to do yours."
Mileria, princess of Angleon

The 5 Lands is a political intrigue set in a Low Fantasy world of fully anthropomorphised animals, written by Lewelyn and drawn by Jérôme Lereculey.

The story begins in the city of Angleon, capital city of the cat kingdom. The king Cyrus the Subtle will die soon, and the heir he chose is dead-set on reclaiming through a great war the influence Angleon has slowly lost. But the king is not dead yet, and much could change over the next few days...

This comic book provides examples of:

  • Big Brother Instinct: The only redeeming quality that Hirus and Moron seem to have in common is their love for their little brother Mederion. It is also one of the causes of their death.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: Kiril prefers to start by killing a few of his targets from afar with his crossbow so that he can engage with less opponents once he draws his blades. Even when he fights one on one, he'd rather surprise his enemy with a bolt before attacking him.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Hirus never minces words with anyone, but he is particularly angry with is uncle:
Hirus: In matters of using one's family to consolidate one's power, you are indeed, dear uncle, an unsurpassable model.
    Cyrus: Little...
Hirus: Keep quiet. And keep your advice for yourself. You designated me not because you esteem me, but because you have no one else to put in my place. You are nothing but the last memory of an old battle that has served you far too much. Give my regards to my father once you have joined him.
  • Dented Iron: After becoming Two-Faced, losing one of his eyes and most of the fingers of his hand, as well as a number of smaller injuries, Kiril is forced to retire.
  • Dual Wielding:
    • Kiril tends to fight with a curved shortsword in one hand and a dagger in the other.
    • While he is just as deadly with just his rapier, This sometimes uses a dagger as well.
    • Most members of the gangs of Lys fight with a knife in each hand.
  • Feeling Their Age: When she tries to retake her place as a prize fighter after several years of inactivity, Thori has to contend with the fact that she is older than any of her opponents and that she will never be as fast she once was. Eventually, she is forced to abandon that path when her coach finds out she has been cheating to keep up with the new generation.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Mileria sees herself as the responsible sibling and Astrelia as the foolish, and she is initially right, though her sister is more naive than outright foolish. However, after Mileria's death, Astrelia rapidly realizes the danger of her situation and manages a relatively successful escape from the city, only being found by professional manhunters after several months.
  • Gayngster: Iniki, of the Sistre clan, has a mistress, and is completely accepted by the family, as Lysians are open to almost any monogamous relationship.
  • Implacable Man: Nothing will stop Kiril from accomplishing his missions, no matter how far he has to go or what he must endure. Deconstructed in the end of the first cycle, as all the injuries he sustained to bring Astrelia back have left him incapable of fighting as he used to and force him to find another line of work.
  • Insult Backfire: The Daughters of the Coucal scoff at those who would criticize their underhanded methods during the gang war:
Djen: What kind of clan manipulates and sacrifices its members ? You are...
Hisa: The Coucal.
Isako: The strongest.
Yun: The smartest.
Kelisande: The future.
  • Interspecies Romance: Despite being deeply frowned upon in Angleon, some do happen:
    • Astrelia, a tiger, is in a relationship with Lereas, a lion.
    • Keona, an ape, and Eren, a deer, quickly fall in love during their forced stay in the capital.
  • Master Swordsman: Of all the fighters of the series, This, a young fencer of small stature, is the one who relies the most on pure skill, when most others use mainly their strength or their shrewdness to survive.
  • Matriarchy: Lys is the only major land to be one; males are still accepted in some positions of power, but most organisations are led by female apes, they make up the majority of the magistracy and police, and all professional sports shown are only for women. Men are also more often than not the ones to take care of the kids.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Alissa inflicts one on a woman who insulted her in a bar, dueling her and beating her to death in the street. Immediately after the end of her fight, she recieves one herself, as the Daughters of the Coucal take advantage of her tiredness and the fact that she is alone and unarmed to beat her into inconciousness with their staffs.
  • Red Baron: Alissa "the chain" Kolire, known for the brutal efficiency with which she uses her chain whip.
  • The Slacker: Moron has been seen as one by his older brother for many years. His sudden show of willingness to make himself useful changes nothing, as Hirus is smart enough to see that his sibling just wants the quick and easy situation (and money) the new heir of Angleon could grant him.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Kiril kills one of the lizards that tried to ambush him by throwing his shortsword.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Being a tough Lysian criminal, Alissa doesn't hit men if she can avoid it.
