Star Wars: The High Republic is a 2022 comic series written by Cavan Scott and published by Marvel Comics, as part of the multimedia project of the same name.

Vildar Mac is a Jedi who has recurring nightmares of his past. In the time before the Great Disaster, he's been sent to the world of Jedha, once a stronghold of Jedi teachings, where a convocation of Force users is being held. But when Vildar arrives, he finds there's worse to expect than unfriendly welcomes from the locals.

Tropes in this comic include:

  • Bottle Episode: Unlike the Phase I comic run, which had multiple arcs across different worlds and covered most of the Phase's story progression, the Phase II run takes place entirely on Jedha, only covering up to the end of the Battle of Jedha. This comic and its characters would get a story sequel in Path of Vengeance (which was also written by Cavan Scott).
  • Canon Immigrant:
    • Bfpaash, a world first mentioned in the Thrawn Trilogy, is mentioned in the first issue.
    • Tey swears "by Arcan", the name of a world that appeared in the original Marvel Star Wars
    • Jedi Master Leebon is a Selonian, a species that was made famous by The Corellian Trilogy.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • After his quarry escapes him, Vildar lets out a quiet "Dank".
    • A Sorcerer of Tund is among those attending the Convocation on Jedha. This isn't the first time a Star Wars story written by Cavan Scott has featured them.
    • Tey (supposedly) wields morichro, a Dangerous Forbidden Technique of the Force that can reputedly kill people on touch, previously only mentioned in the Character Encyclopedia, and itself a Canon Immigrant from the original expanded universe.
  • Culture Clash: The various Force faiths on Jedha are in a fragile peace at best, many of them don't take a liking to Jedi, and some of the Congregation members are incredibly hostile to faiths that even used to practice the Dark Side. And that's without mentioning that the Path of the Open Hand has come to Jedha and is peddling anti-Jedi sentiment.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When Vildar was four, a psychotic Dark Side wielder killed everyone in his village. He still has recurring nightmares about it.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Subverted. Vildar seems to be built up as the lead character of the comic, only to apparently be killed by having his heart stopped by Tey Sirrek at the end of the first issue. The second issue begins with him almost immediately recovering.
  • ...In That Order: Kradon will not tolerate two things in Enlightenment; violence and theological debate. Breaking this rule will result in offenders being barred and decapitated. Not necessarily in that order.
  • Mistaken for Murderer: Vildar and Matty find Tey, who Vildar had previously chased for thieving, standing over a corpse, with a crossbow in hand, and come to the immediate conclusion he's responsible. In issue 2, he reveals he wasn't, and that person actually came to him for help.
  • Motormouth: Matthea "Matty" Cathley, Jedi Padawan is a bundle of talkative nerves. And she's very aware of it.
  • Noodle Incident: Matty did something at Enlightenment which made her promise to Master Leebon she wouldn't go back. Then she went back and did another something.
  • Police Are Useless: In Issue 3, it's revealed that Tey Sirrek used to be a Guardian of the Whills, but left them when he realized they were little more than glorified security guards for the Kyber Temple and tend to be rather apathetic regarding injustices in the holy city. In the present, they not only turn a blind to some of the more dangerous Force cults (like the Path of the Open Hand, which is actively peddling anti-Jedi sentiment), someone manages to sneak into the Kyber Temple without them noticing, stealing an artifact, and planting a bomb.
  • Psychometry: Vildar can use the Force like this, though the visions are usually incredibly indistinct, with a nine out of ten failure rate.
  • Rodents of Unusual Size: Issue 8 shows that there are ginormous, six-eyed rats living in Jedha City's sewers called dune scratchers.
  • Simultaneous Arcs: This comic overlaps with The Battle of Jedha.
  • Touch of Death: Tey Sirrek uses a move that is supposedly Morichro — also known as the trope name itself — against Vildar in the first issue, seemingly killing him in the first issue by stopping his heart. However, the second issue shows that not only Vildar is still alive, what Tey actually used was just a strong Sephi pheromone and not an ancient Force technique.
  • Trauma Button: Seeing a Sorcerer of Tund hits Vildar's, and he nearly draws his lightsaber on him in public.
  • Verbal Backspace: Matty tells Vildar that while some locals aren't friendly, it's not like they get spat on. Well, not usually. And it hasn't happened to her for weeks. Not counting yesterday.
