What would you do with One Month to Live?

One Month to Live, also known as 1 Month 2 Live, is a 2010 five-issue limited comic book series published by Marvel Comics as part of the Heroic Age initiative. The series is written by Rick Remender with art by Andrea Mutti.

The series follows Dennis Sykes, a banker who gains superpowers and an untreatable cancer following an accident with toxic waste. With a life expectancy of barely a month, Sykes launches himself on a brief career as a superhero, in an attempt to make a difference in the world while he still can.

The first issue was published September 1, 2010. The fifth issue was published September 29, 2010.


One Month to Live provides examples of:

  • Big Damn Heroes: The Thing comes upon the robbery and scares off the robbers at the last minute, saving Dennis.
  • Blessed with Suck: Dennis has cancer so badly he only has a few weeks left to live which is a very raw deal, even with the fact the accident giving him superpowers.
  • The Everyman: This is what Dennis was prior to the accident, just a normal man living day-to-day.
  • Extremely Short Timespan: The comic takes place over one month, with each issue covering one week. The s
  • Force Feeding: Some robbers decide to do this to Dennis with medical waste after he tries to help the man they're robbing. This takes a tragic turn as this causes him to develop Cancer with a life expectancy of one month. However, he also gains superpowers from the ordeal and decides to use the time he has left to become a superhero.
  • Good Samaritan: Dennis tries to help a man being robbed, only to be forcefed medical waste and nearly killed.
  • The Hero Dies: Dennis succumbs to his Cancer after one month.
  • Honorary True Companion: Dennis is made an honory member of the The Avengers and the Fantastic Four on his deathbed.
  • Power Degeneration: Dennis' condition gets worse whenever he uses his powers.
  • Real Time: The series was published in the span of one month to coincide with Dennis' life expectancy of one month.
  • Super Doc: Mister Fantastic functions as this to Dennis, being the one to discover the Cancer.
  • The Topic of Cancer: Dennis develops Cancer after being forcefed medical waste. However, according to Mister Fantastic, he was already showing early signs of it before the accident. However, the accident mutated it to where it's in multiple organ systems and he has a month to live, with not even Mr. Fantastic unable to help him. The only upside is that it gave him he ability to reshape matter.
  • Transmutation: Dennis's main ability is being able to manipulate matter to a powerful degree. This includes repairing broken objects, melting walls, creating sculptures from materials present or from water molecules in the air.He can even manipulate matter in living beings, enabling him to expel foreign bodies and transform living tissue into other substances.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Dennis is diagnosed with one month left to live. After discovering he also gained superpowers, he decides to spend his days helping people as a superhero.
