The Sagako Busters

    Eikichi Hyodo

Eikichi Hyodo

First Appearance: Zombie Land Saga Gaiden Ch 01

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zombie_land_saga_gaiden_6.jpg
The protagonist of Gaiden, and the newest, as well as only male, member of the Sagako Busters. He joins after being picked to substitute for his twin sister, Yuko.—-
  • Affectionate Nickname: Hanako and Anna start calling him "little brother" due to his relation to Yuko.
  • Badass Normal: He takes on a Sagako with nothing more than a baseball bat. His exorcism abilities are all done through tools handed down by his sister, though he slowly starts to tap into her supernatural abilities as well.
  • Butt-Monkey: It wouldn't be Zombie Land Saga without this. He's subject to some grueling punishments and exercises thanks to Tae which get him thrown around a lot.
  • Career-Ending Injury: He has to quit playing baseball due to a shoulder injury.
  • Character Development: In his first encounter with a sagako, he begins to understand how much his sister was risking trying to protect him and their family, almost being killed fighting sagako. He decides it's his turn to step up and fight as well, defeating the sagako in a complete turnabout (although he lets it escape by accident).
"This time... I'm the one who does the protecting!"
  • Follow in My Footsteps: He inhereits the onion farm, which he seems to be somewhat ok with.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: He thinks Tae, who had been completely silent and stern the whole time she's introduced, to possibly be the more sensible of the Busters. He's quickly proven wrong when she sternly belittles him.
  • I Know Madden Kombat: His fighting style revolves around his baseball skills, particularly swinging his bat around and chucking exorcism devices like baseballs.
  • Informed Attribute: His shoulder injury doesn't come up outside of a brief backstory segment, as he's shown to perfectly capable of using a bat afterwards.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: The Busters basically drag him into their hideout and demand that he become their resident exorcist in place of Yuko. He doesn't take kindly to this.
  • The One Guy: The only male Sagako Buster.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: How he views himself, not believing he has any significant talents or abilities, and feeling overshadowed by his sister.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: He feels he doesn't match up to Yuko in either skill or likeability.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Compared to the cheery Yuko who devotes herself to protecting Saga, Eikichi is a glum, awkward, and directionless kid who doesn't know what to do with his life.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: His general distrust of the Busters, and feeling like he's got nothing to contribute to their hunt, beckons him to ditch his first mission to hang out in a bathhouse. Of course, it's not long until he has to fend off a demon.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Subverted. He tries to take up smoking after quitting baseball but can barely stomach his first cigarette. His sister doesn't let him live this down.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: The Hyodo twins share very similar facial shapes, something the Busters note upon meeting Eikichi.
  • Supernatural Sealing: The Hyodo twins have access to this ability, being able to seal away the sagako using special wards made from onions. Eikichi has to gradually learn to use this ability when first joining.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He goes from an aimless and depressed school kid to a fully-fledged demon hunter. He also begins to tune in to the same supernatural abilities as his sister.
  • Training from Hell: In order to prepare him for working alongside them, the Busters arrange a strenuous list of exercises from ordinary routines like pushups to showering in a waterfall, withstanding intense heat, and... doing their chores.

    Yuko Hyodo

Yuko Hyodo

First Appearance: Zombie Land Saga Gaiden Ch 01

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kata_hyodo.png
Eikichi's twin sister, and the "Legendary Exorcist". She's fatally injured in a battle with a Sagako at the beginning of the story and has to be substituted by her brother.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Her soul is being contained inside an onion, but it's implied she can still be restored to normal somehow. Thankfully she can, though not without some small side effects...
    • Her Sagako/human ratio after being freed from the onion is also unknown.
  • Artificial Hybrid: Of sorts. The time spent along with the sealed Sagako turned her into one, or at least some kind of hybrid, getting horns after getting unsealed. They fall quickly though, so it's unknown how much of her is a Sagako now.
  • Apologetic Attacker: She apologizes to a Sagako she's about to exorcise, telling it the exorcism might hurt. Sadly this gives the demon a chance to almost kill her.
  • Babies Ever After: After the Time Skip, she's gotten married and is waiting a child.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Subverted Trope. This was her excuse to Eikichi whenever she returned home with injuries. The truth is that she had sustained them through her battles with the Sagako.
  • Fusion Dance: An unintentional case. Getting sealed in the same onion as the deer Sagako was fused them.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She risks her life to seal a Sagako, causing her soul to have to be sealed away to survive.
  • Living a Double Life: Her brother had no idea she was actually an exorcist, assuming she was just an Ordinary High-School Student like him.
  • Nice Girl: A very kind girl who endeared herself to many. Her brother and the Sagako Busters all think highly of her.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Compared to the glum Eikichi who doesn't know what to do with himself, Yuko is cheery, confident, popular, and devotes herself to protecting Saga from demons.
  • Soul Jar: After being fatally injured by a Sagako, her soul is confined to an Onion by her fellow Busters.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: The Hyodo twins share very similar facial shapes, something the Busters note upon meeting Eikichi.
  • Supernatural Sealing: The Hyodo twins have access to this ability, being able to seal away the sagako using special wards made from onions. Yuko specialized in this during her time as a Sagako Buster.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: In the first chapter, she's mortally wounded and has to be sealed in an onion to be kept alive.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Onions. She and Eikichi farm them for a living, and they're also a key material in her exorcisms. She'll gladly eat them raw like apples.

Hanako Hakase

First Appearance: Zombie Land Saga Gaiden Ch 01

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hakase_hanako.png
The "Legendary Scientist", and the Sagako Busters' chief engineer..
  • Ditzy Genius: She's bubbly, awkward, and has a hard time catching on to Tae's frustrations, but she's nonetheless a brilliant inventor. [[Years later, she even gets international prizes for her inventions.]]
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She designs the Buster's equipment for fighting the Sagako, including thier communications system and a device that can measure the Busters' purification prowess.
  • Large Ham: Her introduction of the Busters to Eikichi is incredibly flamboyant and showy, complete with legendary titles for everyone.
  • Nice Girl: The friendliest of the Busters towards Eikihci, almost the complete opposite of Tae's stern behavior.
  • The Smart Guy: A lively, young inventor, and the Buster's chief engineer.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Anna's tomboy. She's very cheery, cutesy, and prefers more of a support role for the Busters.

Anna Shuri

First Appearance: Zombie Land Saga Gaiden Ch 01

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/annajuri.jpg
The "Legendary Part-Timer", and the Sagako Busters' go-to muscle.
  • Almighty Janitor: What her title implies. She's in charge of the Buster's day-to-day needs like cleaning and other house chores. But she's also a monstrously powerful fighter in her own right. She even ends up as a police officer on Tokyo.
  • Badass Normal: She doesn't seem to have exorcism abilities like Yuko, instead relying on her raw strength and fighting prowess.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: She takes on demons with nothing but her bare hands.
  • The Big Gal: One of the Buster's chief combatants, and a very sparse conversationalist.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She keeps her hair much shorter than the others, emphasizing her toughness.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Hanako sets up Eikichi to do the Busters' chores for them like laundry and cleaning. But then he bumps into Anna who states that doing cleanup work is her job, and she wonders why he's doing it considering it won't actually benefit his training, calling him stupid because of it.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: When she was younger, she belonged to a family of thieves, but decided she had enough and left so she could find a "normal life".
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Seeing a group of happy couples at the beach causes her to lament not having a boyfriend.
  • Terse Talker: Has had the fewest lines out of all the Busters. Even her introduction has to be done by Hanako instead.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Hanako's girly girl. She's much more reserved, physically-oriented, and very blunt when talking to others.

A Sagako the Busters encounter lurking in a retirement home's bathhouse.

  • Maniac Monkeys: A semi-liquid demon resembling a large monkey. The first thing it tries to do is kill Eikichi and Tae.

Eikichi and Yuko's mother.
