The Brimhats

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/brimhat_witches.png

  • The Antagonist: The main "villains" of the series given the trouble and conflicts they create for the main characters.
  • Eye-Obscuring Hat: Invoked by the Brimhats, a group of criminal witches that are known to use hats to hide their faces, specially their eyes.
  • Stealth Mentor: The Brimhats seems to be this for Coco, placing challenges in front of her and providing her with tools she normally wouldn't have.

    Iguin

Iguin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iguin_color.png

"My name is Iguin, Sight of the World, The Lidless Eye. Fear not, savior. I had never intended to cause you pain."

A strange Brimhat with an eye covering his face. He was the one to give Coco her magic book and seems interested in her.

  • Affably Evil: He's very cordial to Coco and can be downright caring and friendly to her, while trying to get her to embrace forbidden magic.
  • Blood Magic: He uses his own blood to write glyphs, which makes it much more powerful than the normal magic ink. He forces Coco to use it.
  • The Chooser of the One: He chose Coco as the "savior" of the Brimhats by giving her the forbidden magic book that would later turn Coco's mother into stone and give Coco her motivation to learn magic.
  • The Corrupter: During the Second Test Arc, he actively tries to force a situation in which Coco needs his help so he can teach her forbidden magic. It's implied his end goal is to turn Coco into a Brimhat too.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Qifrey. While Qifrey wants to teach Coco how to use magic to help others, Iguin yearns for the position of Evil Mentor of her and wants her to become the savior just for the Brimhats.
  • The Heavy: He is the main cause of all the problems so far in the series, but it's not clear whether he's the head of Brimhats or even a particularly important one, he is just the one in charge of attempting to bring Coco to the dark side.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: He yearns to make Coco his apprentice and calls her a "savior," even promising to Coco that he'd teach her everything that Qifrey wouldn't once she was ready and that the Dragon he forced them to face was a test for her.

    Sasaran

Sasaran

Click here to see his true face

"Three kinds of people lurk in the darkness: guilt-stricken sinners, pain-averse cowards and prey-stalking hunters tracking their quarry... which one are you?"

A Brimhat witch who makes his first appearance during the second test, taking the form of a floating hat and cape. It would seem Sasaran has no apparent physical form, and thus can't be countered or attacked — unless his appearance is another Brimhat trick...

  • Admiring the Abomination: He's fascinated by the mutations he inflicted on Eunie, and even stops his attack briefly to study the boy.
  • Animated Armor: He appears to be this, having sacrificed his flesh to inhabit a witch's hat and robe. This turns out to be a deception, making it something similar to a puppet while he hid his real body.
  • Arc Villain: He's a major antagonist during the Second Test Arc, being the one who invaded the test and trying to harm Coco's friends to force her into using forbidden magic.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When introduced, Iguin describes him as a living example of the consequences of forbidden magic, seemingly in reference to the fact that he’s nothing more than a disembodied hat and cloak. But that’s just a decoy — Iguin is referring to the fact that Sasaran magically combined himself with an animal.
  • Forced Transformation: He left his true body to be a hybrid with a beast. The beast apparently was his pet cat when he was younger. This seems to be a specialty of his, if what he did to Eunie is any indication.
  • Furry Reminder: When Iguin grabs him by the collar, he brings his paws to his front as if he was a cat.
  • Mad Scientist: Downplayed, but he truly is devoted to research in order to find again forbidden magic that was long lost. He at one point stops to observe the recently transformed Eunie to study how the magic he used worked on the boy.

    Ininia (Spoilers)

Ininia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ininia_color.jpg

"There are ways to help, but the methods have been suppressed. The ones who won't help are the bad witches."

A mysterious young witch and the apparent apprentice of "Lord Restis," Ininia uses time magic to heal Dagda after he and Coustas are attacked by bandits. Though she initially appears with a pointed hat, she openly declares that those who refuse to use their magic to heal others are "imposters," and that "only those who wear the cap of old" are true witches.

  • Badass Adorable: Don't let her cute appearance fool you. Although Ininia is an apprentice witch like Coco, she is far more experienced in forbidden magic which makes her incredibly dangerous. She has also no qualms in using other witches magic against them. Just ask Garuga who found out the hard way.
  • Black-and-White Morality: To Ininia, those who help are considered as Ininia's friends, those who don't are not.
  • Creepy Child: Ininia is very emotionless for a girl around the same age as Coco and Coustas; often speaking in third person with a piercing gaze to boot.
  • Cute Oversized Sleeves: Her outfit has long, flowing sleeves that cover her hands, highlighting her cute appearance and adding to her overall Cute Witch motif.
  • Cute Witch: Ininia is very, very pretty looking with her free-flowing ribbons and uniform.
  • The Dark Arts: Ininia uses time magic to resurrect Dagda from the brink of death (which is expressly forbidden by the Witches Auditorium) and offers to cure Coustas' injuries (also forbidden). The magic itself isn't "evil" or "dark" per se, but its use for healing the human body is outlawed in witch society and punishable with extreme measures. Later chapters reveal that the time reversal glyph she used to "heal" Dagda only lasts a day with each application (forcing Dagda to relive the moment he received his fatal wounds when the glyph's power fades, which prompts Coustas to reapply the glyph lest Dagda's death become permanent) and that the magic she used to "heal" Coustas involved permanently grafting root-like prosthetics to his legs (that can just as easily be used as weapons as they can mobility aids). Neither of those magics are inherently evil, but their applications wind up causing as much suffering as they healed.
  • Devilish Hair Horns: Her hair is styled into short, curving horns that poke out from under the edge of her pointed hat (and are decorated with cute bows). They hint at the darker side of her powers and her allegiance to a mysterious figure who opposes the Witches Auditorium.
  • Emotionless Girl: Ininia is really, really calm. She barely raises a voice and is usually soft-spoken and quiet.
  • Ham and Deadpan Duo: Ininia is very much aloof and emotionless while Coustas is prone to emotional outbursts.
  • Irony: Chapter 65 reveals that Garuga, the very witch that Ininia mindwiped, coincidentally saved her before she was crushed by the giant mutated leech created from Engendill's escape.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Gave a brutal one to Garuga who, after being wounded and incapacitated by Coustas' surprise attack, was left helpless as Ininia literally wiped his memory clean with his own spellpad. Suffice to say, some fans considered it as a fate worse than death.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition: Depending on how you define 'light and darkness' in WHA. But Ininia's relationship with Coustas can be seen as dichotomous to that of Coco and Tartah, both in role, gender and goals.
    • Ininia is an apprentice witch teaching Coustas on the new world of magic. Like Tartah and Coco, Ininia is invested in using magic to heal people. Unlike Tartah who is still contemplating on this or Coco who is traumatised by forbidden magic, Ininia is trained to use forbidden magic and saved Dagdah's life because of it.
    • Coustas is an Unknowing who, due to circumstances being out of his control, was thrust into the world of witchcraft. Both Coustas and Coco had their paternal/maternal figures affected by forbidden magic. But whereas Coustas eventually wants to upend the current world order due to his resentment from being kept out of the loop on magic by friends he considered close as well as his upbringing, Coco wants to find a way to bring back her mother without causing societal chaos.
    • Tartah is from the world of witches but is unable to become one due to his visual disability. Unlike Coustas' disability which cost him his career, Tartah's situation is more manageable and stable and, like Ininia, is trying to find a way to use forbidden magic, specifically healing magic.
    • Coco like Ininia, wants to use magic to help people, whether it is by healing them or aiding them. Unlike Ininia who was already trained in forbidden magic and is more conditioned at the risks of forbidden magic, Coco is filled with doubt and trauma on that prospect from what she did to her mother.
  • Magic Staff: The staff Ininia carries looks magical — she seems to draw power from it before she casts a spell that revives Dagda and she can fly with it like a classical witch's broomstick.
  • Male Might, Female Finesse: Coustas just attacks head-on first like a wild animal, whilst screaming in choleric anger. Compared to him, Ininia avoids any open conflict and often fly around on her staff like an elegant Victorian lady. She spends more time teaching Coustas and 'healing' people than actually outright being hostile. But if she does, she will do it via coersion and subtlety, like putting a cursed band on both Coco and Tartah whilst they were distracted by Coustas, or mindwiping an incapacitated Garuga.
  • Master-Apprentice Chain: Coustas is Ininia's apprentice, despite Ininia herself being an apprentice under Lord Restis. Ininia is very much aloof when it comes to Coustas' emotional outbursts, although she does care for him.
  • Match Cut: Ininia's use of time magic to "rewind" Dagda's injuries in the forest is paired with illustrations of a broken ink bottle in Quifrey's atelier enchanted with time magic to "rewind" the spilled ink and shattered glass back to an unbroken state.
  • Not So Stoic: Chapter 65 reveals that Ininia isn't 100% cold as an icepick, as she showcased a rare instance of frustration due to Engendill's machinations completely disrupting her planned visit to King Deanreldea.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: According to Ininia's perspective, the Pointed-Hat Witches policy of mind-wiping innocent bystanders just by accidentally gaining some magical knowledge is pointlessly cruel. No surprise that she puts Garuga, a Knight Moralis, on the receiving end without any sympathy.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The calm and collected Blue to Coustas' emotionally unstable Red.
  • Signature Headgear: Ribbons form both Ininia's hat and her hairdo. It also magically moves around as if it was alive.
  • Supernatural Phone: Chapter 65 reveals that her staff also works as a makeshift phone directly connecting her to Lord Restis.
  • Third-Person Person: She refers herself by third-person.
  • Time Master: Although 'master' may be stretching it a bit, but Ininia is trained in time magic on a local scale. Reversing the wound and saving Dagdah's life in the process.
  • Tricked-Out Gloves: Her gloves have magic sigils drawn on the palms.
  • White Mage: She uses her magic to "rewind time" around Dagda after he is stabbed by bandits, and offers to cure Coustas' crippled legs. Both of these instances of curative magic are considered The Dark Arts by the Witches Auditorium.
  • Women Are Wiser: Compared to Coustas who is completely ignorant of magic and prone to emotional outbursts, Ininia is a witch (albeit not a fully-fledged one) who often advise Coustas on what to do and is far more experienced in magic.

    Lord Restis (Spoilers)

Lord Restis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lord_restis_01.JPG

"Saving people is our duty, after all!"

A mysterious figure who communicates with their apprentice Ininia through a magic staff. Though Lord Restis claims that witches have a duty to save people, the methods they teach go against every law of the Witches Auditorium. It is unknown if or how Lord Restis is connected to the Brimhat witches, but they espouse a similar ideology and permit Ininia to use forbidden magic.

  • Femme Fatalons: The only character to appear with nails that are long and painted.
  • Makeup Is Evil: Lord Restis' hands have manicured, dark-painted nails. No other character has been seen with painted nails, and Restis is positioned as a figure who opposes the Witches Auditorium.
  • Unreveal Angle:
    • As of their introduction in Chapter 45 Lord Restis is only seen from the nose down, with the rest of their face hidden in shadow.
    • Another unreveal panel appears in Chapter 56, showing Lord Restis offering a brimmed hat to Coustas. The tall point and wide brim of the hat hide most of Lord Restis' face and upper torso from view, with a single eye revealed.
