    J. Robert Oppenheimer

J. Robert Oppenheimer

He is not alone in this photograph.

"The stakes are too high for you to stay home."
—Chris Schenkel, "Daisy"

J. Robert Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist who was the head of the Los Alamos Laboratory, and a leading figure in the Trinity Desk Project. After the corpses of two children were discovered in the project's namesake, he and many of the other Los Alamos researchers came under scrutiny for possible foul play.

  • Doppelgänger: In the image of Oppenheimer, an identical duplicate can be seen standing behind him. Except they are invisible, and where Robert is frowning, the doppelganger is smiling. The Other Oppenheimer would reveal the doppelganger to be the Croatoan. OtherOppenheimer would in turn reveal him to be Oppenheimer's "son" conceived through the Trinity atomic bomb test.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Briefly appears in the first ever episode among the other Los Alamos researchers, before getting a proper introduction in Footage of Transparent Cat.
  • Mad Scientist: If he really is involved in the deaths of the children found in the Trinity Desk, then he and by extension, the rest of the researchers are not very sane people.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Both photographs seen of him thus far have him with a frowning expression. Appropriately enough, his doppelganger is shown smiling while Oppenheimer himself is frowning.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Clearly never intended for the Trinity Desk Project to cause the deaths of two children and other horrible tragedies in the future.
  • Would Hurt a Child: According to the parents of the dead children found in the Trinity Desk anyway, they suspect that Oppenheimer and the rest of the Los Alamos researchers had a hand in their deaths.

    Front Row Seaters

"It closes too!"

"Hi NASA! I'm very excited to RSVP to the Front Row!"
—A Front Row Seater

Front Row Seaters were Ivy League College valedictorians who were invited by NASA to sit in the first row seats for watching the launch of a NASA spacecraft. They are completely unaware of just how close "first row" is.

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: One of the Seaters can be heard screaming as the rocket burns them all alive. It shows that death was not instantaneous, nor painless.
    • Though the heat of the rocket would likely have caused instantaneous death, and Two Invisible Men implies that something even more sinister is at play behind the scenes.
  • Exact Words: When NASA says front row, they mean front row.
  • The Faceless: They are barely visible in the picture we see of the front row. The footage sent by a front row seater to NASA has her face blurred out.
  • Persecuted Intellectuals: NASA explicitly targeted some of the brightest and best students America has to offer and executed them through a spacecraft.
  • Reduced to Dust: Unsurprisingly, the NASA rocket burns them alive and leaves ashes as their only remains. NASA then proceeds to sell them to the Front Row Seaters' grieving families.
  • Refuge in Audacity: NASA has the gall to sell cremation urns to the families of the students they just executed.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Smart enough to be Ivy League valedictorians, not smart enough to realize that when NASA showed them how close "first row" was on launch day, being seated so close to where the rocket was going to launch wasn't a good idea and pretty shady on NASA's part.
  • Weaponized Exhaust: The Front Row Seaters are placed right next to the rocket thruster, causing them to be vaporized when it launches.

    Rudolph Valentino

Rudolph Valentino

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/valentino_6.png
"Imagine... An immigrant in New York, no friends, no family, no English."
"In rain, the Statue of Liberty was almost invisible. This was America's welcome. America's cold breath."
—Rudolph Valentino

Rudolph Valentino was an Italian-born actor who immigrated to the United States, arriving at Ellis Island on December 23rd, 1913. Coming to America full of dreams and optimism, the mood quickly darkens in the cold, rainy weather of New York... and learning why the Statue of Liberty is closed on Christmas Day.

  • Broken Pedestal: Quite literally as well. The warmth of the interior of his ship is contrasted with the cold of America's weather, its "welcome". Only two days into his arrival, he bears witness to the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of the Land of Opportunity, fall off its pedestal and give way to some... thing that's huge and breathing.
  • Immigrant Patriotism: Subverted. He doesn't exactly like his home of Taranto, and he's shown as wanting to emigrate to America, but arriving all alone in America, the cold weather that greeted him upon his arrival, and his witnessing of the Liberty Lung end up souring his view on America.
  • Irony: Valentino bore witness to the Liberty Lung, and would later die to a diease that developed in his left Lung.
  • Medieval Stasis: According to him, his hometown of Taranto was "frozen in time" and was very much separated from the rest of the world. This is why he chose to immigrate to America.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Originally saw America as a land of opportunity where he could escape his hardships in Italy, but the heavy rain that greeted him and the sight of the Lubery Lung emerging from a symbol of freedom made him much more cynical about his new home.

    George Hopkins

George Hopkins

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/george_hopkins.png
A look-alike was hired for the press.
"Rescuers did not find George Hopkins"

George Hopkins was a parachutist that parachuted on Devils Tower in 1941 as part of a publicity stunt. However, he would end up being stranded on Devils Tower, and when rescuers finally came to save him, they could not find him.

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: If the end of DEVILSTOWERTEETH is any indication, then poor George Hopkins was crushed to death by the second Devils Tower.
  • Replacement Goldfish: A lookalike of George was used in his place for meeting the press, pretending as though the disappearance never happened.

    DOCtors

DOCtors

"It is our duty to keep the Organic Curtain closed."
DOCtors, or Defenders of the Organic Curtain, is an American organization whose stated objective is to keep closed the Organic Curtain separating the Truth (capitalization intended) from the public. The Truth being America's True Self.
  • Ambiguously Evil: It's unclear whether withholding America's True Self is a good or bad thing.
  • The Conspiracy: By their own admission, the DOCtors are trying to keep the American people from learnimg of America's "True Self". To this end, they've gone so far as to suspend a great canvas over the "upper" Devils Tower to hide its true nature, among other things.
  • Open Secret: They're apparently fine describing their function as The Conspiracy to those who almost find out too much, as rather than silence Laney Earhart they give her a brief description of their organization's function. They are understandably cagey about what they're hiding, however.

    Laney J. Earhart

Laney J. Earhart

"Over the course of a year, videographer Laney J. Earhart illegally accessed the White House grounds fifteen times."
A videographer who managed to sneak onto the White House's property several times to capture footage of the White House Heart.
  • Awesomeness-Induced Amnesia: Managed to somehow sneak onto government property fifteen times over the course of year, and lost all memory of doing so after bearing witness to the White House Heart.

Anomalies

    The Trinity Desk

The Trinity Desk/The Resolute Desk

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/trinity_03.png
THEY HID IN THE DESK AND THE DESK HID THEM
"WHO IS TO BLAME FOR THE DEAD CHILDREN IN THE TRINITY DESK?"

The titular Trinity Desk is the flagship product of the project of the same name, being one of the first objects the project was able to make invisible. If you look closely, the Trinity Desk is none other than the presidential Resolute Desk.

  • Death of a Child: A group of children playing hide-and-seek hid inside the Trinity Desk, where they would die and be found as bones. Their parents suspect that there was foul play.
  • Gone Horribly Right: At some point, children playing hide-and-seek went into the Trinity Desk, where they ended up dying, never to be found until it was too late.
  • Invisibility: The Manhattan Project managed to make this normal desk invisible. Notably, the desk chosen for this project is the Resolute Desk.

    The Invisible Men

The Invisible Men

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/invisible_men.png
Smile
"In the background of each clip... the woman could see distortions in the air... like heat waves running along the tree line."
—Narrator of Two Invisible Men

An unknown group of entities which were active since the time of the Trinity Desk Project. Since then, they have become active in the 21st century, becoming involved in the incident with the Front Row Seaters at NASA.

  • And Your Little Dog, Too!: Abducts the dog of a woman after it keeps barking at them while the woman discovers their involvement with the Front Row Seaters.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Abducted a woman's pet Husky and dragged it into the woods because it kept barking at them and detected their presence.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Invisible men can be detected by dogs, including objects they directly tampered with.
  • Invisibility: As the name implies, the men are invisible.
  • Government Conspiracy: The Invisible Men had a hand in the NASA incident with the Front Row Seaters, observing them prior to the event and likely covering it up by literally burying the evidence.
  • Nuclear Mutant: Invisibility is achieved through radiation exposure to an atomic bomb explosion. A natural fission reaction, like the one at Olko, Gabon or Roanoke Colony, may also suffice.
  • Stalker without a Crush: A few of them were following and observing a Front Row Seater, likely under orders from NASA.
  • Would Hurt a Child: They were directly involved with at least one of the Front Row Seaters prior to their deaths, and may have had a hand in the deaths of the two children in the Trinity Desk.

    Natural Nuclear Reactors

Natural Nuclear Reactors

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nnr.png
The Roanoke Colony was found abandoned in 1590
"This... was a natural...nuclear reactor."
—David Ruzic

Natural nuclear reactors are an extremely rare subterranean phenomenon in which a uranium deposit is able to achieve a self-sustaining nuclear reaction. In Trinity Desk Project, however, they and other forms of nuclear reactions have the added property of rendering living beings invisible through exposure to its radiation. Two natural nuclear reactors have been demonstrated so far. The one at Oklo, Gabon, and the one at Roanoke Colony.

  • Artistic License – Geology: While they do exist in real life, the Gabon natural nuclear reactor is the only one known to ever exist, and it was only active 1.7 billion years ago for a few hundred thousand years, meaning it could not produce the radiation needed to render a human invisible.
  • Invisibility: The reactors' most desirable trait is their ability to turn human beings invisible.

    The Other Oppenheimer (Spoilers Ahead)

The Croatoan / The Other Oppenheimer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/croatoan.png
"Thank... you..." (Click)
"Do you see him?"

The Croatoan is a long-lived invisible man who has existed since the 16th century. He was present at the Roanoke Colony at the time of disappearance, where the word "Croatoan" is the only clue as to what happened to them. As it turned out, the colony was built above a natural fission reactor, exposing the settlers to radiation that rendered them invisible. The Croatoan would reappear at Los Alamos Laboratory 355 years later, where it is discovered that he bears a striking resemblance to J. Robert Oppenheimer.

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear whether the Croatoan is another victim caught up in the Roanoke Colony's disappearance, or an instigator.
  • Calling Card: Carves the word "Croatoan" wherever it has been present, hence his name. First at Roanoke Colony on a tree, then the dead children of the Trinity Desk on their wrists.
  • Criminal Doppelgänger: Somewhat incidental as no one had seen him, but a man near-identical to Oppenheimer may be the true culprit of the Trinity Desk deaths, leaving Oppenheimer to end up a suspect in his stead.
  • Extra Parent Conception: The Trinity nuclear test, which was attended by J. Robert Oppenheimer, his wife Katherine "Kitty," and his brother Frank, ended up causing the creation of the Other Oppenheimer.
  • Humanoid Abomination: His invisibility doesn't just make him unseen to the human eye, it makes him unseen to the laws of the universe, meaning the normal rules of existence don't apply to him.
  • Identical Stranger: What features can be seen on the Croatoan strongly resembles that of J. Robert Oppenheimer. It's because he is Oppenheimer's son.
  • Nuclear Mutant: The Roanoke Colonists attained their invisibility through exposure to a natural nuclear fission reactor beneath Roanoke Colony. Whether the Croatoan is among them or a separate entity is unclear.
  • Reality Warper: Invisibility is not his only ability. It's true function is to render him invisible to the laws of nature, and thus something akin to a god.
  • Really 700 Years Old: The Croatoan is implied to have been around since Roanoke Colony, making them at least 355 years old by the time of the Trinity Desk Project. However, him being "born" as a result of the Trinity Desk Project adds some confusion.
  • Retroactive Preparation: The Other Oppenheimer had been conceived at the Trinity nuclear bomb test, but somehow managed to influence events 355 years in the past.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He is most likely responsible for the deaths of the two children hidden within the Trinity Desk, seeing as the boy and girl have the word "Croatoan" carved into their wrists.

    Liberty Lung

Liberty Lung

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_10_21_at_71826_pm.png
On Christmas Day, they let Liberty breathe.
"The Statue of Liberty should not be visited on Christmas."
—Rudolph Valentino

The Liberty Lung is a strange organ that sprouts out of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty every December 25th, Christmas Day. Whether it's attached to a greater organism or why it needs to "breathe" is presently unknown.

  • Alliterative Name: The Liberty Lung.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Unlike the Liberty Lurker, whose eating of humans is made clear in its first appearance, the Liberty Lung is not explicitly stated to be harmful, but Valentino discourages people from visiting the Lung on Christmas Day.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: It's a giant lung that pops out of Lady Liberty's pedestal on Christmas Day.
  • Expy: The location and alliteration in its name make it very apparent that the Liberty Lung is this universe's version of the Liberty Lurker. As it turns out, it's even a body part of the Horned Serpent, just like the Lurker.
  • Twisted Christmas: This disturbing lung-like organ sprouts out Lady Liberty every Christmas Day.

    Devils Tower Teeth

Devils Tower Teeth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/devils_tower.png
Parachuting gear continues to fall from the Black Hills.
Click here to see the true Devils Tower
"It's a silly story, but what a lovely place to put Mussolini and Hitler after the war. They could stay up there forever, telling each other whose fault it was."
—Gaumont British News

Devils Tower is a butte located in Black Hills mountain range of Crook County, Wyoming, and was designated the United State's first national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. However, the butte appears to be more than just a rock formation, and there may be some truth to the Native Americans' legends of the tower.

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear if the teeth are literally part of a larger organism, or simply called that by how they look when they converge. Furthermore, WhiteHouseHeart indicates that the upper tower is actually either covered by canvas suspended by airships to hide its existence, or that the upper tower is itself the canvas being held up to hide something even more terrifying.
  • Eldritch Location: Something happens at the top of the butte that causes people to disappear. Then there's the recording of a second Devils Tower hanging upside down right above the original, like "teeth" coming together.

    White House Heart
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/heart_1.png
SIGHTING 1 (Rest Frequency)

The White House Heart is a heart-shaped anomaly that manifests in and around the White House. It appears to hold more functions to it than merely pumping blood, and it's not just because it's disembodied.

  • Hell Is That Noise: The White House Heart emits cacophonous frequencies that sound nothing like a heart should. Some of them had to be muted out "for your safety".
  • Schmuck Bait: The sounds it makes appear to act as lures to draw victims in before abducting them.
