• Parental Favoritism: Paulina is his favourite, despite her not being his biological daughter. It is later on revealed he knew she wasn't his all along, and still prefered her over his other children.
• Secret Other Family: Roberta and their daughter Michaela are this to Ernesto, particularly when you find out that Michaela wasn't the result of a contraception slip-up—they did expensive fertility treatments to have her.

Paulina

Elena is Virginia's eldest child.

• Ambiguously Bi: Unlike her brother Julián, Paulina never comes out, but she does get back together with her ex-husband after she's transitioned to be a woman. She's quite happy referring to said ex-husband as her wife, is physically attracted to her after the transition, and viciously spurns homophobia in season 2 and especially the funeral special more than enough to sound personal.
• New Old Flame: Paulina and Maria Jose got married, had a son, and eventually—thanks to Paulina's habit of treating everything like a big problem which she alone has to solve—their relationship fell apart. In Maria Jose's words, that was "the reason we were over long before I got a sex change." When Maria Jose comes back into Paulina's life, she urges her to deal with her problems in a different way, and when Paulina try that, that is enough to give the two of them a second try.
• Parental Favoritism: She is her father's favorite amongst her siblings, and in a very touching scene, he tells her he always knew she wasn't biologically his daughter, and yet she was his favorite child anyway.
• Secret-Keeper: Knew all along about her father's second family and even helped him.
• Team Mom: Everything in her family is her self-assigned responsibility.
  Paulina: You don't get it. I'm the one who handles everything. I'm the fixer, the one who takes care of everyone.

• Insistent Terminology: Julian is bisexual, and corrects anyone who refers to him as gay.

• Sobriquet Sex Switch: Born José María, after coming out as a trans woman she flipped it around, making it María José.
