YMMV / The House of Flowers

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The soundtrack is full of rather well tunes and songs, especially the show's opening theme, mixing a sense of wit of the family but also sensing the immense tense atmosphere behind that wit.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Reviews generally credit Cecilia Suarez (Paulina) and/or Paco Leon (Maria Jose) with this, though Suarez becomes the main character for season 2 anyway. Their characters' relationship definitely became this, though, as Leon was only supposed to be a minor role that León described as "a cameo of only fifteen minutes;" by the time León confirmed that he was appearing in season 3, he joked that it was becoming the "longest cameo ever".
  • Fridge Horror: Less fridge, more remembering-details - in season 1, Paulina says the safe code is "20-04-10, Micaela's birthday". In season 2, Roberta's grave is shown, giving her death date as 21 April 2018. No wonder Micaela was so excited to get a surprise from her mom in s1 e1, it was her birthday. Roberta hung herself, having invited her children to come find her body, the day after her eight-year-old's birthday.
  • Macekre: The English dub is considered to be truly horrendous, to the point that several reviews suggested watching the show in its original Spanish, with subtitles if necessary.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: The show's focus on family and identity, offering of melodrama and treatment of queer issues, led many reviewers to state that the show is the closest one could ever get to Pedro Almodóvar doing a TV series, with creator Manolo Caro saying that he is a "shameless admirer" of him, and Paco León, when asked what he thinks is the reason for the show's success, saying that "it's like all of a sudden Almodóvar had made a television series."
