Main Characters

    Jiazin

Jiazin

A young noblewoman and firebender whose father is the governor of Long Du Shi (formerly known as Ba Sing Se).

  • Ancestral Weapon: Jiazin's sword has been passed down at least three generations.
  • Flaming Sword: Can wreath her sword in blue flames and can burn a man from the inside out.
  • For Want Of A Nail: In-universe, Jiazin notes that she could have easily become a Chosen had her parents had another child.
  • Legacy Character: Qing Xi trained her to become Azula when the Fire Empress died... or so he was meant to believe.
  • Playing with Fire: Jiazin is a firebender.

    Kanoda

Kanoda

A nonbender from the Southern Water Tribe.

    Tong

Tong

An earthbending slave who escapes his captors.

Fire Empire

    Fire Empress Azula

Fire Empress Azula

The Dragon Empress

Ruler of the Fire Empire, succeeding her father Fire Lord Ozai.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Big time. Canon Azula was a Tragic Villain. This Azula, on the other hand, is as sadistic and omnicidal as Ozai.
  • Big Bad: The central antagonist of the story.
  • Black Widow: Azula has had several husbands over the decades but none survived for very long.
  • Dragon Ascendant: Succeeded her father as ruler of the Fire Nation, now the Fire Empire.
  • Evil Old Folks: Azula is more than a century old by the time the story takes place, and intends to burn the whole world down.
  • The Faceless: Azula never shows her face, primarily to not show weakness through age. She even electrocutes people who look at her face and sleeps with a face covering.
  • Kinslaying Is a Special Kind of Evil: Caused the deaths of three of her family members one way or another. She caused Zuko's death through unknown means, poisoned Iroh so her father could finish him off, and smothered Ozai himself out of mercy when old age and dementia set in.
  • Last of His Kind: The only remaining member of the Fire Nation royal family by the time the story takes place.
  • Long-Range Fighter: Subverted. When Jiazin fights Azula, she attempts to gain an advantage by closing the distance and forcing Azula to fight hand-to-hand. This doesn't work because Azula is surprisingly strong for her age and can bend an opponent's chi.
  • Old Master: Despite being more than a century old, Azula still trains for fighting as if she were much younger and demolishes younger opponents even when ganged up on. She even invented a couple new techniques.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Intends to drag most of civilization down with her when she dies.

    High Minister Qing Xi

High Minister Qing Xi

Azula's chancellor and the leading bureaucrat throughout the Fire Empire.

  • Evil Chancellor: Zigzagged; Qing Xi would be an Evil Chancellor given that he's a schemer who serves a tyrannical regime, but Azula is far worse than he is.
  • Expy: The author has said that Qing Xi is one of Long Feng from the original series, albeit one who has been forced to adjust his strategies to compensate for a leader stronger than he is.
  • Graceful Loser: Jiazin forces him into retirement at the end of the main story. After an initial outburst of anger, Qing Xi accepts his loss with an admonition that he will be needed one day.
  • The Spymaster: Qing Xi is the head of the Fire Empire's secret police, the Hidden Flame.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Poisons the Mistress of the Chosen once he can get her alone after Azula departs for Long Du Shi.

    High General Xia

High General Xia

The supreme commander of the Fire Empire's armies.

  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Started out as a low-ranking aristocrat at the bottom of the military chain before working his way Up Through the Ranks to become general.
  • Noble Demon: Tries to be as good a man as he can be while serving the Fire Empire. Eventually, he decides Azula has gone too far and defects to the rebels.
  • Uriah Gambit: When Xia is sent to crush the rebels after they take back Long Du Shi, Azula declares his forces traitors and follows after him with her own army before he'd even arrived at Long Du Shi; she'd been looking to kill him for years as she believed him weak.

    High Admiral Yuan

High Admiral Yuan

The commander of the Fire Empire's navy. Yuan is also a grandson of Admiral Zhao.

  • Glory Hound: Yuan's goal in life is to eclipse the deeds of his grandfather Admiral Zhao.
  • Identical Grandson: Essentially identical to his grandfather to the point that Yue has a hard time differentiating the two.
  • Inheritance Murder: It's mentioned that Yuan got several of his relatives killed so he could become heir to his grandfather Zhao's holdings.
  • Smug Snake: Like his grandfather, his ego eclipses his actual competence.

The Chosen

An order of female warriors raised to serve Azula.

  • Badass Normal: None of them are able to bend the elements (and are conditioned to repress the ability if they can) but all are trained to fight toe-to-toe with powerful benders. Even Jiazin, herself trained with the sword and as a firebender, is left at a standstill against them.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Zhi is a member of the Chosen who is Azula's bodyguard, attendant, and sparring partner. Also qualifies as Battle Butler.
  • Cult: An order of female warriors who worship Azula as a god. Even Shiyan says the word is accurate to describe them.
  • Dark Action Girl: All of them are ruthless warriors, even the Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain Cheng.
  • Evil Counterpart: A meta one to the Warriors of Kyoshi, as Azula used the Kyoshi Warriors as an inspiration when she created the Order. Really the only thing they don't share is the fans.
  • Evil Wears Black: All of them wear black armor.
  • Former Regime Personnel: Several of them choose to follow Jiazin as Fire Lord, seemingly happy to be doing something and being of use.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Their existence can be traced back to Azula's disposal of Prince Zuko. Mai discovered that Azula caused Zuko's death and killed everyone in her path to reach Azula, with Azula killing Mai while Ty Lee fled from Azula. From there, Azula decided that no one would care about her and created the Chosen as a means of creating loyal followers.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Use katanas as their main weapons.
  • Undying Loyalty: Conditioned to revere Azula as a living god.

    The Mistress of the Chosen

The leader of Azula's bodyguard.

  • Black Cloak: Wears a black cloak with gold trim at all times.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Her entire identity has been surrendered to Azula.
  • High Priest: Also leads the cult that worships Azula.
  • Taking You with Me: Subverted; when Qing Xi reveals he poisoned her she tries to kill him, but he chose a fast-acting poison so she would be too ill to do anything before she succumbed.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Qing Xi has her tea poisoned once he's able to get her alone.
  • Your Makeup Is Running: As she starts to succumb to the poison, the sweat on her forehead causes her facepaint to run.

    Shiyan

Shiyan

A young Chosen who tails Kanoda throughout his journey.

    Cheng

Cheng

A Chosen trainee under Shiyan's guidance.

Earth Kingdom Resistance

A group of freedom fighters operating in the area around Long Du Shi. They were founded by Toph Beifong.

  • Irony: Their current base is Lake Laogai, the facility originally used by the Secret Police the Dai Li.
  • Trick Arrow: Their signature weapons are arrows with stone tips; the resistance uses them to augment their distance and stopping power.

Other Characters

    Gian

Gian

A mercenary employed by the Fire Nation to capture runaway slaves.
