The male protagonist of the story. Tamahiko is the second child of the rich and infamous Shima family. He was involved in a car accident that took away his mother and the ability to use his dominant right hand. Deemed worthless by his father, he was shunned and sent to live away from the public eye.- Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The Brooding Boy to Yuzuki's Gentle Girl.
- Cool Teacher: All the kids he ends up teaching like him.
- Death Seeker: At first, his only wish was to die since he loathed himself for being so incapable.
- Friendless Background: Because of his family's reputation among the public, Tamahiko never had any friends growing up.
- Missing Mom: His mother died in a car accident which he survived.
- One Head Taller: He towers over the short Yuzuki.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Yuzuki's Red Oni.
- Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Yuzu's presence has this effect on him, erasing all the gloominess he felt.
- Took a Level in Idealism: He blatantly describes himself as a pessimist in the very first minute of the series because he has nothing to look forward to in life. Yuzu changed that.
Yuzuki Tachibana

The female protagonist of the story. Yuzuki is a 14 years old girl who originally went to a girls' school before her family sold her to the Shima family to repay their debt. In exchange, she'll be Tamahiko's caretaker and eventually, future wife.- Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The Gentle Girl to Tamahiko's Brooding Boy.
- The Caretaker: Her assigned role is to look after Tamahiko.
- Perpetual Smiler: She almost always has a smile on her face.
- Plucky Girl: Yuzu is always optimistic and cheerfully determined.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to Tamahiko's Blue Oni.
Tamako Shima

Tamahiko's younger sister and the youngest of the Shima children. She is bratty and domineering thanks to her luxurious upbringing.- Annoying Younger Sibling: To her brother Tamahiko when she stays at his place unexpectedly.
- Jerkass: Initially, she's just plain rude to her brother and Yuzu.
- Took a Level in Kindness: She's become a lot nicer ever since Yuzuki bonded with her.
- Younger than She Looks: Tamako is 12 but looks older than Yuzuki, who's 14.
Ryo Atsumi

A delinquent girl living with three younger brothers, she picks pockets to provide for them and shields them from their abusive father. She meets Tamahiko while robbing his estate, but they become friendlier when he begins tutoring her brothers.- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Looks to be a condescending thief at first glance, but she loves her siblings dearly and forms a friendship with Tamahiko and Yuzuki.
- The Tease: She loves teasing Tamahiko romantically, even in front of Yuzuki.
Kotori Shiratori

A famous singer, whom Yuzuki and Tamako, and later Tamahiko, are fans of. She eventually befriends the two while looking for inspiration for her new song about love.- Nice Girl: She always was a sweetheart, even after gaining fame as a singer.

Kotori's twin brother. He used to be a musician like his sister but gave up after battling an illness for three years in childhood. He becomes acquainted with Tamahiko when they're both transferred to school at the same time.- New Transfer Student: How he's introduced. He ends up in the same class as Tamahiko.

Father of Tamahiko, Tamako, Tamaki, Tamayo and Tamao. A ruthless man, he is indifferent towards his family and sees money and privilege as the ultimate success. His cruelty is such that he cast Tamahiko off for his disability and had him declared dead, he allows Tamayo to torture her siblings, and he shows no concern for his children's well being if it doesn't benefit him.- Abusive Dad: Of the verbal variety. If any of his children fall short of his expectations, he will ruthlessly belittle them.
- Big Bad: The closest character to being the main antagonist. He's certainly behind a lot of the cast's problems.
- Hate Sink: Nothing about him is likable.
- Knight of Cerebus: Once he shows up, you know it's getting serious.
- Lack of Empathy: Has no concern for anyone, including his own children.
- Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Most of the time, the story is relatively lighthearted. This evaporates when Tamayoshi shows up.

Tamahiko's paternal uncle who works as a doctor.- Cool Uncle: Unlike his brother, he's very considerate towards Tamahiko.

Yuzuki's best friend from her all girls school before she was sold. The two kept in touch by exchanging letters. Yuzuki visits her in Tokyo when Midori writes she is getting married due to her pregnancy.- Best Friend: Midori is Yuzuki's best friend.
- Nice Girl: She's a very sweet and supportive girl.
- Imperiled in Pregnancy: Her pregnancy takes a toll on her when the earthquake hits Tokyo.
- It's All My Fault: Blames herself when Yuzu goes missing in Tokyo while visiting her due to the earthquake.
