The Solar Defenders:

     David Lopez
The narrator, David is writing out his story so that people will know the truth, just in case they all get wiped out. Became Defender Jupiter after picking up the former Jupiter's Fundament crystal.

  • Amazon Chaser: He has a big crush on Kawena.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: David's fondest wish is to simply graduate and go off to college, to get out of Michael's Landing alive. Being a superhero is the last thing he ever wanted, and being the leader of the team doubly so, but to his credit he doesn't back down from it.
  • Rookie Red Ranger: His color is orange rather than red, but David otherwise fits this trope to a T.
  • Secret Chaser: Despite both Aderan and Kawena advising against it, he's trying to figure out who the previous Defenders were.
  • The Leader: Whether he wants to be or not.

     Kawena Kapule
The local "hot Hawaiian babe," David's secret crush, and Defender Venus.

  • Aerith and Bob: The only person on the team to not have a typical American/English name. Instead, it seems her family prefers traditional Hawaiian names.
  • Amazonian Beauty: She's tall, one of the best fighters around, and (according to David at least) the hottest girl in school.
  • Dirty Coward: Her reputation at school.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Her weapon.
  • My Greatest Failure: Chapter 10 implies that she did something wrong that got her sister killed back when she was new to the team.
  • The Ace / Broken Ace: She's the most skilled and most experienced fighter on the team, and the second-best karate student in the school, but her time on the Defenders has left her cynical and scarred, and David worries that she's close to her breaking point.
  • The Heart: Given the mythology the team is themed around, this appears to be her designated role. She'd prefer not to talk about it.
  • This Is Reality: She's fond of pointing out that real monster-fighting bears little resemblance to the way it's portrayed on TV.

     Josh Hunter
David's best friend, and the biggest Solar Defenders fanboy around. He takes to being Defender Mars with glee and excitement.

     Jenny Morris
David's other best friend, a half-Native American girl who's always hanging out with him and Josh. She becomes the new Defender Neptune alongside the other two.

  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Where Josh is a Fiery Redhead, Jenny is more quiet, calm, and empathetic.
  • The Heavy: Neptune's role on the team, specializing in powerful combat magic.
    • The Heart: Jenny's personality leans more towards this; she seems to be the most social and empathy-driven person on the team.

     Eden Christiansen
The other veteran on the team, though not by much. She wears the silver armor of Defender Mercury. A scrawny nerd who's one of the last people David would ever suspect of being a Defender, she has her own fighting style based on magic-enhanced hit-and-run tactics.

Abe Lincoln High:

     Scott Underwood
The musclebound older brother of the Underwoods, Scott is a linebacker and a bully who torments David and other kids at school. He gets away with it because his dad is rich and powerful.

     Blake Underwood
The slender younger brother of the Underwoods, Blake is the top karate student at Abe Lincoln High, and his brother's partner and constant companion in shoving around those weaker than him.

  • Expy: Of Skull, if he were an actual cruel high school bully rather than a buffoon.
  • Pet the Dog: In the attack on the school, he follows his brother's example and teams up with Mars to fight golems. He also wins the karate meet in chapter 3 for Abe Lincoln High after a rival from another school beat both David and Kawena. None of this improves David's opinion of him; he's still a thug in David's eyes regardless of his skills.
  • The Bully: Naturally.

     Sensei Billingsley
The karate teacher at Abe Lincoln High.

  • Failure Knight: He lost a son to a monster attack, and he blames himself for not having trained him and his friends to be competent enough to survive it. He's since dedicated himself to training every student at Abe Lincoln High in martial arts, so that they'll at least have a chance if they get attacked.
  • The Mentor: Makes sure to train all the students in karate, just to make sure that the ones who become Defenders will know what they're doing. He offers the actual Defenders special training.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: The Underwoods back down under his watchful eye, and he sees through their lie about the bullying being nothing more than an accident. He also does his best to support the students who become Defenders both with martial arts training and helpful advice.
  • Secret-Keeper: He knows who (most of) the Defenders are, and actively keeps their secret identities safe because he understands better than most people what's on the line.

Aliens:

     Aderan
A benevolent but aged alien sorcerer who brought the power-granting Fundaments to Earth to give humans a chance to fight against the monsters.

  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Rachael claims that, being an alien, he has a fundamentally different psychology and can't relate to humans particularly well. One thing's for sure: he has no problem with employing teenagers as front-line troops, but is still not treated as a horrible person for doing so.
  • Expy: Of Zordon, he's an aged sorcerer from another planet who gives out Sentai powers to teenagers, has a deep voice, and acts as their guide and mentor.
  • The Mentor: The keeper of the secret base that acts as a headquarters for the team. He gives out advice and useful information to the Defenders.

     The Masters
The people behind the monster attacks. Little is known of them other than that they're malevolent, conquering aliens; the way they don't appear in the story directly is perhaps the biggest departure of the story from the Power Rangers formula.

  • Alien Invasion: They're the ones behind it.
  • The Ghost: So far they have never shown up personally in the story; they are only interacted with by way of the monsters they regularly send to attack Michael's Landing.

Other:

     Rachael Ling
The original Defender Neptune, she grew up, went to college to become a psychiatrist, and returned to Michael's Landing to help out.

  • All Therapists Are Muggles: Her role in the story is to avert this trope. As a former Defender herself, she understands what they're going through and is in on The Masquerade, and she has an arrangement with the various team members to provide her counseling services to them as needed, free of charge.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: She has the quotation framed in her office.

     Ramón Lopez
Dave's little brother, who looks up to him.

  • Children Are Innocent: And Dave wants to make certain he stays that way! He charges Cinthia very strictly not to say a word about him being a Defender to Ramón.

     Cinthia Lopez
Dave's little sister, who finds the Fundament of Defender Sol.

  • Bratty Half-Pint: How Dave sees her.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Non-romantic example. Dave objects strenuously to the idea of her being a part of the team, eventually convincing both her and Aderan that she should be De Powered for her own safety and that of the entire team.
