"Kautta likaisten varpaitteni!"note

The main hero and a member of a troll-like species who (depending on the setting) lives in a small wooden cabin in the middle of "Rölli Forest" and tries to live up to his people's bad reputation, only to fall short due to his good heart and clumsiness.

  • A Dog Named "Dog": He's a member of the Rölli species and called that by everyone. Millie asks in Quest for a Heart why this is so, and Rölli replies that he has no special feature/role that'd distinguish him from the others.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's cranky, mischievous and often thoughtless as well as trying to act like a bad guy, but his heart's in the right place.
  • Older and Wiser: Rölli and the Golden Key and Rölli and the Secret of All Time portray him as an old man who, while still true to his normal clumsy portrayal, is in his own way a wise intergenerational friend to the young Juniper girl.
  • Older Sidekick: Rölli and the Secret of All Time focuses on Juniper's quest to find out her origins, while the elderly Rölli tags along to make sure the young girl won't land herself in trouble.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He doesn't look that old, though he claims himself to be under several centuries old in the original series.

    Milli Menninkäinen (Millie the Elf)

Portrayed by: Maria Järvenhelmi (Rollo and the Spirit of the Woods), Alina Tomnikov (Rölli and the Golden Key, Rölli and the Secret of All Time), Helka Suomäki (as a child in Rölli and the Golden Key)
Voiced by: Saija Lentonen (Quest for a Heart, Finnish), Lisa Stansfield (Quest for a Heart, English)
Appearances: Rollo and the Spirit of the Woods, Quest for a Heart, Rölli and the Golden Key, Rölli and the Secret of All Time

A kind elf girl and Rölli's love interest since her first appearance in the movies.

    Iso/Suuri Rölli (Big Rölli)

Portrayed by: Jussi Lampi (Rölli, Rolli – Amazing Tales, Rollo and the Spirit of the Woods), Jari Kotilainen (Rölli and the Golden Key, Rölli and the Secret of All Time)
Voiced by: Pekka Lehtosaari (Quest for a Heart, Finnish)
Appearances: Rölli, Rolli – Amazing Tales, Rollo and the Spirit of the Woods, Quest for a Heart, Rölli and the Golden Key, Rölli and the Secret of All Time

The biggest and strongest rölli who's also the stupidest.

  • Accidental Hero: In the climax of the first movie, he enters the Trashers' lair when Rölli and the Forest Fairy are bound and all the other forest inhabitants converted into Trashers. He doesn't much understand what's going on, yet he semi-accidentally ends up causing the destruction of the Great Trash and the lair when the broom he has ends up down the the Great Trash's throat.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Starting from the third movie, he's a downright Gentle Giant in contrast to the TV series and the first two movies where he altered between an antagonistic figure and an ally.
  • Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti: In the third movie, Big Rölli is the Abominable Snowman. Though he acts scary at first, he quickly turns out to be a Gentle Giant and is allowed to become a member of the Rölli village since he looks like a gigantic Rölli.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's the largest and strongest Rölli, yet he's very little on brains.
  • Friend to All Children: He's implied to be this in the second movie, as he's several times shown spending time with rölli children in the background.
  • Hidden Depths: In the second movie, he's a snarling Dumb Muscle who rarely utters a full word to the point that he's hit by stage fright when he's supposed to make a speech. However, when Cacophony starts playing his flute in order to alleviate Big's tension, Big uses a deep voice to sing eloquently about tender feelings hidden under the Röllis' rowdy shells.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In the second movie, he's a growling, ill-mannered and intimidating brute, and he even wants to eat Millie at one point. Aside from that, some of his misdeeds can be attributed to his stupidity and gullibility. He takes it surprisingly well when Rölli knocks him out and replaces him as the chieftain. He's also shown getting along well with Rölli children and allows one to ride piggyback on him in the opening scene. He also merrily dances with an elf female in the ending scene. In a deleted scene, just as Lackey gains the upper hand in the duel he has with Rölli, Big rushes to Rölli's aid and throws Lackey into the pond.
  • Manchild: His portrayal in the second movie comes off as a big irritated kid with speech impediments. He's eating porridge during his coronation and petulantly knocks the chieftain's headgear off his head to continue his eating, with Lackey trying to make him act with more dignity. When it's time to make a speech and he can't think of anything to say, he writhes in the spot like a kid hit by stage fright.
  • Super-Strength: He's strong enough to easily move boulders and trees, and he performs a Human Hammer-Throw on Cacophony in the second movie.

    Rölli Riitasointu (Cacophony/Atonal)

Portrayed by: Kari Hietalahti (Rollo and the Spirit of the Woods), Krista Kosonen (Rölli and the Golden Key, Rölli and the Secret of All Time)
Voiced by: Jyrki Kovaleff (Quest for a Heart, Finnish), Jim McManus (Quest for a Heart, English)
Appearances: Rölli, Rollo and the Spirit of the Woods, Quest for a Heart, Rölli and the Golden Key, Rölli and the Secret of All Time

A musically talented rölli from whom Rölli takes music lessons.

  • Adaptation Name Change: She's called laulunopettaja (singing teacher in Finnish) instead of Riitasointu in Rölli and the Golden Key and Rölli and the Secret of All Time.
  • The Dandy: In the second and third movies, Riitasointu is a man more neat in his mannerism and appearance than the other röllis ad haughtily considers himself more sophisticated and tender than them.
  • Fiery Redhead: The character is consistently portrayed to have red hair and prone to emotional outbursts.
  • Gender Flip: A female in the TV series before becoming male for the second and third movies and then returning to female.

    Rölli Rupeltaja (Longwind)

Voiced by: Matti Ranin (Quest for a Heart, Finnish), Ian Thompson (Quest for a Heart, English)
Appearances: Quest for a Heart

A rölli who's often mentioned but rarely appears in the franchise.

    Maahiskeiju (the Forest Fairy)

Portrayed by: Sari Mällinen (Rolli – Amazing Tales)

Rölli's friend who appears only in the first movie.

  • A Dog Named "Dog": There's mentioned to be more than one forest fairy, so she apparently has the same case of a naming theme as Rölli.
  • Implied Love Interest: To Rölli in the first movie.
  • Only Sane Man: She's the only resident of the Rölli Forest who thinks about what damage the large amounts of junk will cause if allowed to spread. The High Priest recognizes her as a threat because of this.
  • Women Are Wiser: She's the only main female character of the first movie and with the possible exception of the talking wise tree, the closest to earth among the main cast.

Pahan Valtakunnan Ylipappi (High Priest of the Evil Kingdom)

Portrayed by: Rolf Labbart (Rolli – Amazing Tales)

The cult leader of the Trashers who aspires to spread pollution across the Rölli Forest in the name of their deity, the Great Trash.

  • Big Bad: Of the first film. Though he's technically The Dragon to the Great Trash, he has a lot more screen-time and takes forward the Evil Plan by giving orders to the other Trashers and making their plans. After the Great Trash has been killed, the High Priest threatens to rekindle the Trashers and his plans to destroy the Rölli Forest. His death puts a stop to this threat.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He's gleefully open about his desire to spread evil through pollution.
  • The Chessmaster: He works step by step to destroy the Rölli Forest. This includes getting Seesteinen and Lerkkanen abducted and forcefully recruited, and getting rid of the Forest Fairy by destroying her friendship with Rölli.
  • Devious Daggers: This insidious cult leader wields a large ritual dagger.
  • Ecocidal Antagonist: His goal is to destroy the Rölli Forest through pollution.
  • Evil Old Folks: This villain's actor was nearly seventy years old by the time the film was released.
  • Evil Wears Black: He dresses entirely in black along with his minions.
  • No Body Left Behind: When the old tree kills the High Priest by falling on him, Rölli finds only the villain's empty clothes and lampshades it.
Rölli: His coat became quite empty!
  • Signature Headgear: He wears a black skullcap.
  • Sinister Minister: He's the High Priest of a cult of Ecocidal Antagonists.
The High Priest: We believe in the Great Trash, the Almighty Destroyer of the world, begotten by carelessness, born of greed. Oh, Great Trash! Wilt thou take these two as thy servants and baptize them as Trashers and Spreaders of Filth?
  • Sinister Surveillance: He monitors what happens in the Rölli Forest in the large surveillance room of the Trashers' lair.
  • Weakened by the Light: As soon as the High Priest enters the Rölli Forest, the light and purity of the forest turn his face ashen.

    Lakeija (Lackey/Footman)

Portrayed by: Peter Franzén (Rollo and the Spirit of the Woods)
Voiced by: Aarre Karén (Quest for a Heart, Finnish), William Vanderpuye (Quest for a Heart, English)

One of the meanest of röllis.

  • Adaptational Heroism: He's the Big Bad of Rollo and the Spirit of the Woods, but a Jerk with a Heart of Gold in Quest for a Heart.
  • Big Bad: Of the second film since it's mostly due to his influence that the rölli tribe engages in hostilities with the elves.
  • Evil Chancellor: He starts out in the second movie as the adviser of the rölli tribe's elderly chieftain. After the latter resigns, Lackey runs for the chieftain position against Cacophony, but as soon as Big joins the election, Lackey decides to let the dim-witted brute be elected and direct him. He indeed takes it upon himself to uphold the tribe's hostility towards the elves. When Rölli knocks out Big and is made the new chief, Lackey quickly convinces "Rölli the Great" to make him his adviser. He eventually manipulates Rölli into attacking the elves and drive them far away. In an aftermath deleted scene, the ashamed Rölli is about to resign, so Lackey decides to replace him and make things worse than they already are. Refusing to allow this, Rölli duels with Lackey and beats him with Big's help.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He wears spectacles in the second movie where he's the Big Bad.
  • Jerkass: In the second movie, Lackey is mean, conceited, manipulative, and thoroughly hostile towards the elves right from the start.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While he's initially hostile towards Millie in the third movie, he's ultimately loyal to his fellow röllis and warms up to Millie.
  • Lack of Empathy: In the second movie, Lackey cares nothing about how the elves feel about being driven out of their homes, and even his own people's feelings don't concern him unless he can somehow exploit them. He also remorselessly causes Rölli to hit the elves' tent with a flaming arrow, and he marvels at the sun being covered by the moon while everyone else are unsettled by this and dismayed by Millie's death. A deleted scene plays this even further by having him gleefully plan on how to make things worse as the new chieftain of his tribe even though everyone else are still unsettled by the permanent darkness, and he mocks Rölli for mourning Millie's death.
  • Manipulative Bastard: In the second movie. When Big asserts his position in the election for a new chieftain, Lackey decides to back off and rule the tribe by influencing the dim-witted brute. When Rölli accidentally knocks out Big, Lackey quickly gets in his good graces through adulation and even convinces him to lead an attack to drive the elves far away.
  • Smug Snake: In the second movie, Lackey is a manipulative Jerkass who considers himself more shrewd than the other röllis. He even has in the soundtrack a song named "Lakeijan laulu" ("Lackey's song") in which he flaunts his superior intelligence by stating that brainpower is true power.
  • The Sociopath: In the second movie, Lackey arrogantly considers himself to be intellectually superior to everyone else, shamelessly revels in causing mayhem, lacks empathy even towards his own kind, views caring as a weakness, is willing to manipulate and use anyone for his own gain, and is the only rölli who doesn't change for the better.
  • Token Evil Teammate:
    • In the second movie, he's right from the start the meanest member of the rölli tribe and at the forefront in showing hostility towards the elves.
    • Downplayed in the third movie where he's more of a Token Jerkass Teammate.

Vaakamestari (the Master of the Scales)

A mysterious being who maintains gigantic scales that measure good and evil in the world.
