Main Characters

    Naomi Cohen

The protagonist of Pass, an Orthodox Jewish practitioner of historic and heroic magic.

  • Ambiguously Gay: It's strongly implied that Naomi is a lesbian but heavily closeted, as she's not especially interested in Theo even apart from the fact that they're entering an arranged marriage, but is very interested in Aria. The "ambiguous" part is eventually subverted through Iakov's Interlude, which shows that she's truly closeted.
  • Does Not Like Men: Downplayed. Being an Orthodox Jew, she's been raised to limit close interactions with men, and is uncomfortable when alone with men as a result. It makes it difficult for her to get close to Theodore.
  • Jewish and Nerdy: Devoutly Jewish, and a practitioner whose practice involves close study of history. She has a tendency to go off on long tangents about history, her practice, and the intersections thereof.
  • Magical Eye: Her Sight is extremely strong and in-depth, allowing her to analyze connections, emotions, major incarnate forces, and even look backwards in time.
  • The Mentor: She serves as Julian's primary teacher in Practice.
  • Must Have Caffeine: She drinks coffee, sometimes multiple cups, whenever she reasonably can.
  • Powers via Possession: She can channel the skills and personalities of long-dead Names to fight, learn, or socialize better.
  • Real Men Love Jesus: Or rather "Real Women Are Jewish". She's a devout Jewish practitioner, and no weaker for it.

    Iakov

Naomi's familiar, a Pawn of Struggle who takes the form of a hare.
