Beowulf Baker

Beowulf often has to walk his partner home—Thedrick isn't the best at moderating his drinking.

I’m from here, actually… My family lives in town; they are bakers and butchers by trade. I was recruited into the army for… well, obvious reasons. But I don’t really like fighting much, which is why I’m happy to be recruited into the royal guard rather than get sent out on the front lines..

Thedrick Červenka

Thedrick makes a great conversational partner when he's not too busy trying to annoy the shit out of people. (He's the little guy on top.)

I’m proud of my work as well. This outfit signifies I am the funniest guy in the entire kingdom, which is quite the feat considering how many fools we have around here.

Balthasar Olbrecht

• Fan Nickname: The mean girl. He is also referred to as a mean girl on the official website.
• Pretty Boy: Emil is referred to as pretty several times, to the point where it's become a defining characteristic.
  Beowulf: Pretty boy… you have to go help Thedrick! Take ‘im a blanket or somethin’... poor little guy must be so cold and alone…

Later on, Emil relays this to Cassian when asking him for advice.

Emil: He called me ‘pretty boy’...

Cassian Hunter

Cassian is maybe a little bit too into letting Balthasar hurt him and Balthasar is a little too into wanting to hurt Cassian, uh, someone should probably talk to them about that that's not normal

So, you two, are you...?

May be a little straightforward, but cares about his soldiers. Well. Some of them, at least.

• Father to His Men: Cassian treats Beowulf like a nephew he's particularly fond of. Later on, he develops a bond with Emil, although significantly less overt.
• Reformed Bully: Cassian was quite the asshole growing up—turns out he just didn't know how to cope with his attraction to Balthasar. Too bad he existed before the subreddit r/AITA.
• Rivalry as Courtship:
  So, Cassian started trying to flirt with Balthasar. While superficially this seemed to anger the chirurgeon, Cassian was sure he could see another emotion in his eyes as well, a certain spark of interest. This became a fun little game between them of push and pull, of Cassian coming onto Balthasar and then the chirurgeon threatening him, usually with a knife.
• Survivor Guilt: Cassian feels horrible about leading his unit into a trap, and still has nightmares about it.
  The guilt felt like a dark, slithering thing in his guts, which twisted and coiled around itself. He felt like he wanted to be sick.
• Veteran Instructor: Cassian's job is to teach the new recruits to fight. Unfortunately, most of them do not learn very much (and not for lack of trying on Cassian's part).
