The Winks Family
Piggley Winks
Portrayed by: Maile Flanagan (child), Peadar Lamb (adult)
This spirited eight-year-old pig is our hero and the unofficial leader of the youngsters in and around the village of Tara. He's a spunky, creative, imaginative rascal, with a streak of mischief running through his veins and a definite gift of the gab. His favourite activity is going on adventures (don't ask him to sit still!) with his two best friends, Ferny and Dannan.
If there's a simple, straightforward way of doing something, it's of no interest to Piggley! He'd rather uncover the mysteries in everyday life, explore the outer reaches of imagination, and cook up exciting new schemes.
- Book Dumb: He's sometimes portrayed that way, even taking time to do simple sums such as 7+7.
- Brilliant, but Lazy: He's very talented in many areas but does not seem to like schoolwork, often slacking off and sometimes getting low grades due to not studying enough. According to Mr Hornsby, Piggley is perfectly capable of doing schoolwork if he puts his all into it, but due to his general laziness, he often doesn't show his potential.
- Cheerful Child: He's often shown to be very happy, friendly and energetic, though sometimes this isn't the case.
- Cool Old Guy: His grandchildren seem to think so. He's still quite active for his age, being able to play basketball and the guitar which impresses Sean and Seamus.
- The Determinator: He's always the last to call it quits, even if the situation looks dire.
- Genius Ditz: He's not great at subjects in school like maths but excels in music and writing.
- Innocently Insensitive: Piggley may accidentally hurt his friends' or family's feelings out of obliviousness. An example is in "The Legend of Raloo", where Piggley wanted Ferny to act out as a bad guy during their crusade because of his Spanish heritage, unaware that he offended Ferny.
- Mr. Imagination: Piggley is known to have a very active imagination, which helps write stories. He still carries this trait in his senior years, though he only uses it to push his narrative when exaggerating what happens in his backstories.
- My God, What Have I Done?: In "Picture Perfect", he's instantly regretful and apologetic about accidentally humiliating his best friend Ferny after failing to tear up an embarrassing photo he took of him.
- Nice Guy: Despite his Jerkass Ball moments, he's humble, friendly, and caring to his friends and family.
- Older and Wiser: Piggley is much wiser as an elderly adult, often giving advice to his grandchildren from his own past experiences.
- The Storyteller: The narrator for his old stories.
- Sweet Tooth: He loves his mother's oven-baked apple pies, chocolates, sweets and a glass of lemonade.
- With Friends Like These...: His friends abandoned him in "Teacher Creature" after their teacher Mr Hornsby arrives at the Winks household.
Molly Winks
Portrayed by: Tara Strong
Piggley's independent, plucky, adorable five-year-old sister, Molly is always ready at a moment's notice to get in there and play with the big kids. In fact, she's annoyed that she's not old enough to go to school yet. When the other kids aren't around, Molly is content to entertain herself using her imagination.- Annoying Younger Sibling: Molly can sometimes annoy her older brother, Piggley, usually by accidentally getting in her brother's way or pestering him, though it's mostly unintentional.
- The Baby of the Bunch: At five years old, she's the youngest member of Piggley's group.
- Big Brother Worship: She looks up to her big brother, Piggley.
- Cheerful Child: Very cheerful and always seen happy.
- Children Are Tender-Hearted: While only very young, Molly cares about Sweets, her pet fawn.
- Friend to All Living Things: She's very loving to all animals.
- Girlish Pigtails: She has her ears fashioned as those with red bows tied.
- Nice Girl: She's generally a sweet and friendly little girl.
- Overalls and Gingham: Living on the farm, Molly has her blue denim overalls as her main outfit.
- Tagalong Kid: On a few occasions, she would accompany her older brother Piggley and his friends on their adventures.
Elly and Padrig Winks
Elly is portrayed by: Russi Taylor
Padrig is portrayed by: Charlie Adler
Padrig is portrayed by: Charlie Adler
- Bumbling Dad: Subverted. Padrig's generally just as levelheaded as his wife, often teaching his kids the value of hardwork, sometimes in a subtle way.
- Foolish Husband, Responsible Wife: Both are fairly levelheaded in their own rights but Elly seems to be a bit more down-to-earth than her husband.
- Good Parents: Both are generally good parents who look out for their children and only want what's best for them.
The Toro Family
Fernando "Ferny" Toro
Portrayed by: Russi Taylor (child)
Piggly's best friend, a young bull- Big Eater: According to both Piggley and Dannan, he eats six eggs, fried spots, soda bread with marmalade, fruit, kippers, beans, mushrooms, porridge and milk every day. And that's just his breakfast!
- Break the Cutie: In "Picture Perfect", he becomes extremely hurt and upset after a humiliating photo of him is shown to the public. Also, in "The Legend of Raloo", he has to play the bad guy because of his Spanish heritage.
- Cheerful Child: He's the most upbeat and cheerful character in the series; very little can put down his mood.
- Cloudcuckoolander: He has moments of being a bit airheaded, though he's by no means stupid.
- Lovable Coward: He's very friendly, but he's also easy to frighten and is usually reluctant to dangerous situations.
- Missing Mom: His mother died when he was at a very young age.
- Nice Guy: He's the friendliest of the trio, though this can also lead to him being taken advantage of.
- Smarter Than They Look: Despite his general naivety and being a bit of a Cloudcuckoolander, he has no problem with general schoolwork. He was the first one to finish off his big test with no issue in "Salmon of Knowledge" (despite studying less than Dannan) and still ended up getting an A. He's also knowledgeable about Spanish culture, being of Spanish descent.
Don Toro
Portrayed by: Fernando Escandon
Ferny's widowed dad- The Blacksmith: He's the local blacksmith. He once forged a cuirass and morion for his son so that he could introduce his friends to "El Cid", one of the heroes of Spain.
- Gentle Giant: He may look a bit intimidating, but he's the nicest guy you'll ever meet, and he would never lay a finger on anyone.
- Nice Guy: Much like his son, he's very friendly to everyone and is rarely ever seen unhappy or angry. Unlike his son, though, he won't let others take advantage of his kindness.
- Papa Wolf: He's very protective of his son, especially after what had happened to his wife. He's displayed this in "The Cat Came Back" after Hector MacBadger took his son's candy.
The O'Mallard Family
Dannan O'Mallard
Portrayed by: Tara Strong
- Ambiguously Absent Parent: Her parents have never been seen or mentioned at all. She only lives with her grandmother.
- Deadpan Snarker: She's particularly snarky towards Piggley's nonsense.
- Depending on the Writer: She's sometimes portrayed as being much saner and smarter than her trio of friends, while other episodes show her acting just as carefree as them.
- Only Sane Woman: She's the only one to show a reasonable level of scepticism whenever Piggley and/or Ferny bring up something out of the ordinary or come up with odd solutions to their problems.
- The Smart Girl: She's considered one of the best students in her class.
- "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Well, granddaughter. In "Dannan Does a Jig", she really wants to impress her grandmother with her dancing skills and fears embarrassing her.
Teachers and Classmates
Mr Hornsby
Portrayed by: Charlie Adler
- Cool Teacher: He's revealed to be one in "Teacher Creature", which shows his more humorous and playful side.
- Hidden Depths: Some episodes reveal that he isn't just a teacher; he also has hobbies such as reading stories and cooking.
Hector MacBadger
Portrayed by: Pamela Adlon
- The Bully: He's the closest to being the Big Bad in the series.
- Friend to All Living Things: Underneath that mean exterior is a boy who loves animals. He's very caring to animals such as lambs and deer.
- Hidden Depths: If you're willing to look past his bully façade, he's actually a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. This is more evident when he cares for animals.
- Hidden Heart of Gold: Has a soft spot for animals as Dannan discovered in "Extra!, Extra", and when she reveals to their class on how he kindly helped a little lamb to return to his mother, Hector becomes embarrased and sinks in his seat.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He is a jerk at his worst, though he doesn't push it to extreme lengths just to get a laugh. He's had many instances of this, especially when wild animals are involved.
- Sweet Tooth: In one episode he pretended to be troll under a bridge to scare Piggley, Dannan and Ferny of the pie they were carrying to school. And when they flee, he gobbles it quick.
- Took a Level in Kindness: Implied in "New Best Friends". Piggley says at the end of the episode that he will give Hector a call, implying that Hector has shed at least a good part of his bad qualities as he aged.
