Protagonists

Destiny Island Quartet

The four main protagonists of the "How To Fix Kingdom Hearts" series, including Namine.
    Sora
The hero of the Kingdom Key. When Destiny Islands were engulfed in darkness, Sora set off on a journey to discover the worlds, and most importantly, himself.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In a sense; due to the Dark Is Not Evil theme of the series and The Reveal that Xemnas uses light, Sora ends up with his beliefs regarding light and darkness shaken.
  • All-Loving Hero: Played with. Sora is understandably upset by Xehanort's actions, and Xehanort himself admits that Sora should hate him for them. However, Sora knows that Xehanort's backstory screams Cry for the Devil.
  • Light Is Good: Deconstructed. Sora uses the light and is one of the good guys, but as it's seen with his Anti Form, he has a hard time adapting to the idea that Dark Is Not Evil.
    Kairi
A mysterious girl from another world. Later revealed to be the princess of Radiant Garden.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: She's shown to be desperate with returning to her homeworld of Radiant Garden (Word of God is that it's due to a feeling that something terrible is going on there), while canon doesn't show any signs of that.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: She's a legitimate princess instead of a Honorary Princess, being the granddaughter of Gnosis, the king of Radiant Garden.
  • Adaptational Badass: She's much more competent fighter than canon, even than in the manga. It's noteworthy that she's never kidnapped in this series; the villains holding her body doesn't fully count, since Riku genuinely wanted to save her, being an Unwitting Pawn to Ansem, and Sora was keeping her heart safe from the villains, and while Axel did come close to kidnapping her, having managed to corner her, she was rescued just in time by Namine.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Several Kingdom Hearts 2 segments focus entirely on her.
  • Adapted Out: The idea of her being pure of heart was removed, since in the games it meant her heart was made of pure light, which was turned into an anomaly in this setting. It's also noteworthy that Namine, her Literal Split Personality, has darkness in her heart.
  • Ascended Extra: There's a stronger focus on her character arc than in canon.
  • Big Sister Bully: Not willingly, but if it is to be believed that Namine is an Anthropomorphic Personification of Kairi's feelings for Riku, then Kairi becomes this due to her having repressed those feelings for a good while. She got better after meeting Namine face to face.
  • Light Is Good: Pretty much the straightest example in a series where Light Is Not Good.
  • Related in the Adaptation: She's the granddaughter of Gnosis, who is Ansem the Wise having underwent Adaptational Name Change.
    Riku
A boy once lost to his own ego who returned as the hero of darkness.
  • Ascended Extra: Not himself, but his Dark Mode, which he keeps using up until the end of Dream Drop Distance whereas in canon he gave up on it after the Castle Oblivion debacle.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Namine; both of them were manipulated by a villain and both believe Dark Is Not Evil.
  • Dark Is Not Evil
  • Loving a Shadow: Subverted; he briefly had this feelings for Namine; however, as he spent time with her, he started loving Namine for being herself and not for being a piece of Kairi.
    Namine
A mysterious girl Riku met in Castle Oblivion. Later revealed to be a missing piece of Kairi's heart.

Disney Castle Trio

The main guardians of Disney Castle.
    King Mickey Mouse
The King of Disney Town and the hero of the Kingdom Key D.
  • Big Good: For Riku's arc in Castle Oblivion. He's the student of Bigger Good Yen Sid.
    Donald Duck
The royal wizard of Disney Town.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He saves Sora's life by interrupting a lethal dark spell Ansem made. The spell still fractured Sora's heart, however.
    Goofy
The head of Disney Town's royal guard.

Clock Tower Trio

The Token Good Teammates of Organization XIII.
    Axel
Real name: Lea. One of Xehanort's three apprentices, and the one that's the least of a scumbag.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Downplayed; he's one of Xehanort's apprentices in this continuity, but he's Affably Evil at worst and doesn't like Xehanort's methods either way.
    • Inverted with him kidnapping Kairi. In canon, he did it to deliberately turn Sora into a Heartless, just so he can see Roxas again. Here, he did it under pressure from Xemnas, who wanted to use Kairi to blackmail Sora into giving him the Kingdom Key, and was actually relieved that, unlike in canon, he failed.
  • Affably Evil: When he opposes the heroes.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The one he has in canon is made more impactful due to him being one of Xehanort's apprentices.
  • Playing with Fire
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one to DiZ when the latter tries to kill Xemnas, calling him a heartless crook for believing Roxas and Xion's lives didn't matter.
  • Token Good Teammate: Of Xehanort's apprentices; unlike Xehanort, Braig and Isa, Axel, after having a Heel–Face Turn, started actively helping the heroes.
    Roxas
Original self: Sora. A boy who joined Organization XIII with no memories and bonded himself with Axel and Xion.
    Xion
Original self: Kairi through Sora. A mysterious girl that joined Organization XIII on Roxas's 7th day among them.

Wayfinder Trio

A Trio of legendary Keyblade Masters of the Land of Departure.
    Terra
A hailed hero of the Land of Departure. His usage of darkness started bringing doubt in people's minds.
    Aqua
One of Terra's closest friends.
    Ventus
One of Terra's closest friends.

Allies

    Master Yen Sid
A retired, yet still widely respected Keyblade Master.
    DiZ/Gnosis the Wise

A widely respected Keyblade Master of the Land of Departure, and the Wayfinder Trio's mentor.
    Ephemer
One of Terra's closest friends. Sadly no longer with us.
