Characters / Helix Waltz Ellenstein Household

Go To

The Ellenstein family is an old noble family of Finsel. Though the Ellenstein family was not among the Saint's earliest followers, they moved to Finsel when it was still just a small village and joined the Senate. However, at some point before the start of the game 10 years ago, they were ejected from the Senate in disgrace. Their patron is Duke Langwon Sakan.

    Magda Ellenstein

The main character

Affiliation: Ellenstein Family
Species: Human

The player character, a sweet, somewhat naive young lady thrust into the world of courtly intrigue and the politics of nobility. Born to common citizen parents from the Slum, she was adopted by Eliza Ellenstein (with recommendations from Duke Sakan) after a fire killed her family. She was told to forget her name and was renamed Magda Ellenstein, her true identity and the fact that she was adopted kept hidden.

  • Animal Motif: She’s commonly associated with birds, with some characters giving her nicknames like "eyas" and "sparrow." Official art sometimes shows her alongside peacock feathers.
  • Badass Bureaucrat: Has shades of this in season two.
    • Beleaguered Bureaucrat: The political situation in Finsel is unstable, foreign powers all have their eyes on the city, and Magda has to juggle paperwork at the same time. She finally gets a reprieve when she hires Nyx as her undersecretary.
  • Clashing Cousins: Cynthia, Eliza's niece, is the only named NPC Magda shows hostility towards from the start. While it's suggested that she sees Cynthia as a rival for her mother's affection, her suspicions of Cynthia having a hidden agenda quickly prove to be true.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Both her parents died in a fire and she lost her home. Though her adopted mother holds genuine affection for her and has given her a better life than she would have had on the streets, the fact remains that she was taken in for the purpose of elevating the Ellenstein family back into its former status in Finsel society and is expected to act as a spy for Eliza's anonymous patron.
  • Guile Hero: Magda has about as much physical self-defence ability as you'd expect out of an upper-class young lady—which is to say none—but she's possessed of a sharp and inquisitive mind, finely-honed powers of persuasion, and no small amount of guts. Once she enters Finsel high society it doesn't take long before she's embroiled in all kinds of mysteries and secret plots, and several characters (such as Barris) become convinced that Magda has the potential to be a powerful force for change.
  • Happily Adopted: While the pressure of reviving a fallen household is enormous, Magda is truly happy under Eliza’s care and they have an ordinary, healthy mother-daughter relationship outside of noble deeds. She even goes so far as to threaten Cynthia with violence as a warning in case Cynthia wants to lay her hand on Eliza.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Her default appearance sports blonde hair and she is a nice, sweet girl.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Subverted. The player is prompted to enter a name for her at the start of the game, but when Eliza adopts her she's re-named "Magda" and told to forget the name she had before.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Magda throws a cup out of the window and warns Cynthia that that will be her if she ever hurts Eliza.
  • In-Universe Nickname: She has a series of nicknames from many acquaintances: "Eyas" (by Juven Sakan) and "Little Sparrow" (by Gonzalo Jorcastle) are just two of them.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Her most commonly remarked-on feature, although the game does allow the player to change eye colour by changing Makeup.
  • Irony: As much as Magda dislikes Cynthia, there’s an entire set named "Thistles and Roses" that practically transformed Magda into Cynthia, albeit less shady-looking. Observe.
  • Nice Girl: Portrayed as a kind, humble, empathetic girl who won’t judge people based on rumors and remains pleasant to those who are hostile to her. However...
    • Beware the Nice Ones: As far as her warning to Cynthia is concerned, she wouldn’t hesitate to employ violence if her beloved mother is in danger.
  • Number Two: Becomes this to Juven at the end of the main story, serving as the secretary of the Senate when he becomes Regent of Finsel.
  • Player Character
  • Spirited Young Lady: Magda is considered one of the few noble women in Finsel who has an interest in the military, and eventually becomes the first female official of Finsel.
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards her adoptive mother, Eliza.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: People always remind us that she has a magnificent pair of blue eyes.
