"I don't care how scary they are, I'm not leaving. I'm looking for something important, and I won't stop until I have the answers."

Our protagonist: a nice, beautiful, and very brave girl who moved into the mansion. She wants to find things about her missing mother and a specific book, "Notes from the Realm of the Dead", which belonged to the previous owner.

  • Determinator: When she slipped out into the portal to the Realm of the Dead, she wanted to swim downwards to darkness.
Hey ? Why am I going up ? I should go there too!
  • Face Your Fears: Hachiho has a natural fear of the supernatural, but overcomes it for her own personal reasons (and because she just moved).
  • Flower Motifs: She is so nice and innocent, in chapter 5, while cheering up a kodama to make flowers grow, the kodama grew their first flower... on Hachiho's head !
  • Fluffy Tamer: The first "spirit" she sees is a snake-like and -sized lightning dragon. She squeed at them.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: Hachiho, in chapter 5, said to Moro she didn't understand why Kamô seeks to use spirits as vulgar objects. Moro was kind of impressed and blushed in his way.
  • Plucky Girl: A slightly more melancholic version. Hachiho is definitely not the kind to be battered by constant adversity, confusion or fear.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She's a very good cook, as seen in Chapter 2, and, despite moving out in a rather huge mansion, takes upon herself to do the massive amount of chores necessary to maintain it by Chapter 3, despite the tiring rhythm of schoolwork, paranormal encounters, and getting her bentos eaten by an insect-like spirit she had to banish in the previous episode.
    • She even takes the time to draw the spirits she encounters.

    Chihaya

Chihaya Kamo;

A sorcerer who collects spirits to use their powers. He believes people cannot cohabit with spirits.

  • Animal Lover: Episode 4 endnote is a yonkoma where we learn Kamo; likes animals, and followed Fuku to Hachiho.
  • Military Mage: He seems to be some sort of mercenary mage, as he was "paid" to take away Raichi and Ushi with him.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: In Episode 4, the only reason he gives up Ushi and Raishi is that he didn't want to get angry at Hachiho.

    Tachibana

Tachibana

"These spirits still look scary to me, but Tachibana-san seemed to love them."
Yachiho
The previous owner of the mansion, a researcher that lived in peace with the spirits.

Spirits

    Moro

Moro

The "Guardian of the Passage". A small spirit that is responsible for helping other spirits to cross back to the Spirit World. He takes Yachiro as an assistant while she's looking for the Book of the Dead.

  • Adventure Rebuff: Tries at first. Then he notices her odd talent with the supernatural by Chapter 3 as she understands where Azare's child was.
  • Expressive Mask: Moro uses a mask that can change its expression to match his mood.
  • Rod And Reel Repurposed: How he reels back in Hachiho from the portal in Chapter 1.

    Azare

Azare

A spherical and intimidating "putrefaction spirit". Was looking for their (her?) child in Chapter 3.

    Raichi and Uchi

Raichi and Uchi

"Masters of lightning and rain.". Kamô once took Raichi for some unknown purpose, but had to return to take Uchi too because the former and the latter feed each other and they were starving, causing a drought. At the end of Chapter 4, freed as asked by Hachiho.
  • Gonk: Probably because they are actually Fun Size anthropomorphic concepts.
  • Happy Rain: Their (short-lived) gift to Hachiho before flying away.

    Kodamas

The Kodamas

Spirits of the wood. They look like hollow bark puppets, and kinda cute when small.
