While we can use redirects (e.g. Big Sister Bully and Orcus On Her Throne and Last Of Her Kind and Nice Gal and Ms Exposition), we're not supposed to edit trope names like that or spoiler them out like that. The Woodlands are in the very north-east of Noros, east of the northern half of the Sea of Demons and north of the Waterlands. They are defined by their [[SlippySlideyIceWorld snowy weather in winter]] and their [[TheLostWoods thick forests]], bamboo to the south and oak towards the north. There is a forest full of wildlings in the far north called the Frostbitten Forest, and its rulers, House Luna reside in the south-west of the region in Eientei. Bastards in this region are surnamed 'Woods'.

* TheLostWoods: Is pretty much defined by this, with some plains being notable between the bamboo and oak forests.
* SlippySlideyIceWorld: As the story progresses, it is the region where [[Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire winter is definitely coming]], and the snows are pretty heavy. The Frostbitten Forest is this especially.

* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Grey Hair]]: A family trait of theirs is their ash-grey hair, even in youth, which only cements their connection to fire.

[[folder:Ser Daisuke Tachiba]]
A fairly handsome young knight, and Lady Marisa's first lover. He is also the father of Mystia Woods.

* AbsurdlyYouthfulFather: He's remarked as comely by many people, and he raised Mystia himself, and despite that seems no less worse for wear.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Once again, a [[SubvertedTrope subversion]]- while he is courteous, handsome, competent and loyal, he also was dishonorable enough to sire a bastard, but is a good person regardless.
* OnlyOneName: For most of the story, he was just 'Ser Tachiba', it was only [[spoiler:when he was promoted to Remilia's Queensguard]] that his given name was revealed.
* OriginalCharacter

* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:He cuts off Iku's mangled, crushed legs and later helps carry Iku when she's crippled]].
* RankUp: [[spoiler:He becomes one of Remilia's Queensguard in the end]].
* TheirFirstTime: He and Lady Marisa's first time was said to be awkward, unpracticed, and resulted in him being chewed out majorly by Lord Maurice Kirisame for his efforts. To make things worse, he ended up making her pregnant.

[[folder:Ser Shibou Taida*]]
A middle-aged, fat, yet competent knight who works as a gate-guard and room-guard to Lady Marisa. He also seems to have a past with the late Lord Vladimir Scarlet. He becomes a POV character in chapter 83.

* AscendedExtra: Compared to his initial appearance as just a gate-guard with a name, he gets to become a POV character and has a relatively complex backstory, being one of the more prominent [[OriginalCharacter Original Characters]].
* BigFun: Has shades of this, being both large and at times boisterous, but he is very much capable of being serious, and in his POVs he is rather introverted.
* BladeOnAStick: Favors this fighting style, though he can also wield a sword with moderate competence.
* BrosBeforeHoes: He and Vladimir Scarlet stopped being friends after he took his lady love of old, Kisa.
* ChastityCouple: Occasionally is shown to be part of one with Lady Marisa as the only knight she has never had sex with and the only one she emotionally loves.
* TheFaceless: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]- he ''tries'' to be this by wearing his helmet all the time, as he's ashamed of his ugly face, but Marisa regularly convinces him not to.
* ForWantOfANail: If he and Kisa had got together rather than her and Vladimir, Koakuma would never have been born, and [[spoiler:the implied future rebellion that is likely to continue the cycle of violence in the epilogue]] wouldn't occur. Also, [[spoiler:he would have never come into the service of Lady Marisa, likely undoing the Kirisame asylum of the returned Lunas]].
* {{Gaydar}}: He seems to notice Iku's AmbiguouslyGay tendencies, something other characters rarely note.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has a multitude of facial scars, which Marisa tells him to be proud of, as they show his sacrifices in battle.
* JackOfAllTrades: Is a moderately competent fighter, general, and even suggests a few decent schemes every now and then, but he is not mentioned as particularly excelling at any beyond spear combat.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Is a [[SubvertedTrope subversion]]- while he is courteous, devoted, honorable, and kind, he is fat, ugly, and generally unattractive, bucking the stereotype.
* IAmNotPretty: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]- while Marisa wants him to be proud of his face and reveal it more often when he's not in immediate danger, he genuinely is ugly- he has a fat face, acne, and scars.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Rumia Woods, who he trains in sparring.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: In the later chapters relating to the Rainbow Fort, it is clear from [[spoiler:Iku's]] POV that plots ([[spoiler:mostly by Tewi]]) are floating around the Woodlands entirely unbeknownst to him, and while he's suspicious of some people, he's almost always wrong as to what it is they're plotting.
* LoveHurts: His old love, Kisa, did this to him, however he seems a positive-minded individual despite this. His relationship with Marisa [[AvertedTrope averts]] this, actually remedying hurt.
* MaleGaze: One of the few people to [[AvertedTrope avert]] it with [[MsFanservice Lady Marisa]], as he's seen her naked so many times it barely registers any more.
* NiceGuy: Is one of the most genuinely good characters in the series.
* OriginalCharacter
* ParentalSubstitute: Marisa sees him as both this and a potential emotional love interest. Rumia sees him simply as a parental substitute, though, as her father is unknown and Lady Marisa trusted the raising of her and the teaching of swordsmanship to him.
* RiseOfZitboy: [[AvertedTrope Averted]]- though he has noticably bad acne, he doesn't particularly care about it, and just prefers to hide it in his helmet.
* StoutStrength: Is treated as, and overall seems to be, a strong man despite his girth.
* UndyingLoyalty: Undoubtedly has this to Lady Marisa.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Is implied to have come into the service of Lady Marisa due to him leaving his former friend, Lord Vladimir Scarlet, on bad terms, likely due to his old love 'Kisa', a woman strongly implied to be Koakuma's mother.
* WillTheyOrWontThey: Him and Marisa have a lot of ship tease, but ultimately their relationship is fatherly and daughterly despite confusion.

The second eldest bastard daughter of Lady Marisa, and aged twelve. She is far more innocent than her mother, but more childish than Mystia.

* ActionGirl: Is being trained to be one by Ser Shibou.
* CheerfulChild: Is largely optimistic and fun-loving, and absolutely ''adores'' Ser Shibou.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Her personal sigil is the Kirisame sigil on a black field, but this in no way shows that she's evil- in fact, she's rather innocent.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Unlike her older sister and mother, she doesn't even have a 'scheming for the greater good' facet of her personality, and truly is just sweet-natured, and has gold hair like the rest of her family.
* TheIngenue: Is this to a tee, especially for age twelve.
* MoralityPet: To both Ser Shibou and later [[spoiler:Denys Pyke]], showing the good nature of both, especially poignant in the latter case due to him being [[spoiler:ironborn]].
* OddFriendship / IntergenerationalFriendship: With both Ser Shibou and [[spoiler:Denys Pyke]], the former bonding because he's a father figure and the latter because [[spoiler:they're fellow bastards]].

The eldest bastard daughter of Lady Marisa Kirisame, aged sixteen. She is pretty, demure, and an effective battle commander for her age, and has also been groomed to succeed Lady Marisa upon her death.

* ActionGirl: As a sixteen-year-old commander and FrontlineGeneral, she qualifies without a doubt.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Is blonde-haired in this, as opposed to in Canon, where her hair was purple-pink.
* AdaptationalHeroism: From a man-eating CuteMonsterGirl who lures unwitting humans to their deaths to a genuinely sweet bastard girl who is heroic in her own way.
* BigNo: Has one when [[spoiler:Alice ruins the siege of the City of Flames, charging out [[WhatAnIdiot like an idiot]] and getting her 'dolls' incinerated by wildfire]].
* BreakTheCutie: She's been through enough war-based trauma to be at least rattled, as her more quiet and serious demeanor late-story shows.
* DaddysGirl: Is notably attached to her biological father and mentor in combat, Ser Tachiba, both of them having a drink together at an inn when [[spoiler:he is sent off to join Queen Remilia's Queensguard]].
* [[SonOfAWhore Daughter Of A Whore]]: Is spoken of in this light by at least Mokou Fujiwara, due to her mother being the famously promiscuous 'noble whore'.
* DoubleAgent: Is a more active double agent than her mother, but works along with her agenda, which involves [[spoiler:covertly working for the Makais while pretending to be on the Luna/Fujiwara alliance's side by 'rescuing' Iwakasa Fujiwara from Ser Yuugenmagan]].
* TheDulcineaEffect: She has this effect on Iwakasa Fujiwara, making him thoroughly in lust with her and protecting her to his sister after only meeting her [[spoiler:when she 'rescued' him from Yuugenmagan]].
* {{Foil}}: Has a striking amount of similarity to Gengetsu Barren while being almost completely opposite her in personality- she is a pretty, blonde-haired bastard aged sixteen, but while she is not bothered by her bastardy, Gengetsu resents it intensely, and while she's being groomed to succeed her mother, Gengetsu is not recognized as a Kazami despite her efforts to prove herself to her mother. While Mystia tries to be her own person, Gengetsu tries painfully hard to be her mother, and finally, while both take advantage of others, Mystia is good at heart while Gengetsu is an uncontrollable psychopath.
* FrontlineGeneral: Is always out in the field with her men, something that Iwakasa Fujiwara notes as courageous for her age.
* HeroicBastard: Is undoubtedly this, having the good heart of her mother while also being a courageous battle commander.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Has a reputation of being the more pure and virginal daughter of the 'noble whore', however she is still capable of taking parts in underhanded plots and schemes, making this a [[SubvertedTrope subversion]].
* TheIngenue:
* RescueRomance: Is part of a gender-inverted example, being the unreturning recipient of feelings of at the very least lust from Iwakasa Fujiwara, [[spoiler:a man she's only rescuing to further the rebel agenda]].
* SilkHidingSteel: Given her polite, virginal disposition and reputation and compare it to her ability to cope with war atrocities and command men at the age of sixteen and you get this.

* BadassGay: If still alive, he would have had to be this given the wildling infestation surrounding the Rainbow Fort and the fact he's survived for years if this is the case.
* TheGhost: He is mentioned a few times but never seen.
* IncompatibleOrientation: He was betrothed to Alice, but was found bedding another man, being the catalyst for Alice becoming an AxCrazy CompleteMonster.
* OriginalCharacter
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: His bedding with man-whores even during his betrothal to Alice resulted in her going off the deep end.

* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Seemingly a family trait- Marisa is an EthicalSlut, Mystia is a kind, proper lady, and Rumia is a CheerfulChild. The only living (?) Kirisame that this is doubtful for is Ser Robar, who [[TheGhost we never see anyway]].

[[folder:Lady Marisa Kirisame]]
The Lady of the Rainbow Fort. A prolific user of man-whores and all-round hedonist with a heart of gold. While initially seeming to have little influence, her decisions become important to the story.

* AbsurdlyYouthfulMother: At thirty-two she's already had four children, the eldest of which is sixteen, meaning she was only sixteen herself when she first had her child.
* AgeLift: From the teeneaged Canon iteration to a thirty-two year old mother of four.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Is surprisingly frightening when crossed, although this is partially due to her [[TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask having to be frightening]].
* [[SonOfAWhore Daughter Of A Whore]]: On top of being treated as ''a'' whore, her mother being a former wildling has not helped her image.
* EthicalSlut: Is an exceptionally promiscuous noble, however she is one of the most kind-hearted nobles in Noros, and seems to have a ForHappiness kind of philosophy regarding sex.
* {{Expy}}: Of both Fanon!Marisa and [[Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire Prince Oberyn Martell]] in being promiscuous, yet good-hearted and loving to her family. Unlike Oberyn, however, she lacks his [[HotBlooded hot-bloodedness]], almost like Oberyn's older brother Doran in her calm plotting and [[spoiler:emotional anguish]].
* FairForItsDay: Her in-universe views are like this when you compare her to the rest of Noros, and she certainly has no qualms with male prostitution to equal the female prostitution of the rest of the continent.
* GoodParents: Marisa is a kind, loving parent who makes sure her daughters can follow their dreams, going as far as providing knights to train them in combat and ensuring, when possible, that her children can have a relationship with their father. She also fully intends to have her eldest ''bastard'', Mystia, inherit the Rainbow Fort when she dies.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Seemingly a family trait- she has blonde hair and is possibly the kindest noble in Noros.
* TheHedonist: Is shamelessly indulgent of her wants, but she does not indulge them to the point of harming others, [[SubvertedTrope hence subverting the trope]].
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Is genuinely good-natured and kind-hearted, but her promiscuity places her in a bad light with most of the other nobles.
* HookerWithAHeartOfGold: While not actually a prostitute, merely considered one due to her promiscuity, she has shades of this trope in that she's genuinely good-hearted, yet promiscuous.
* MayDecemberRomance: She and Ser Shobou Taida, the only Kirisame knight she hasn't slept with, have a [[WillTheyOrWontThey strange pseudo-romantic close parental friendship]] [[BuffySpeak thing]] despite their huge difference in both age and attractiveness.
* MementoMacGuffin: Her hakkero is a memento of her mother, Mima.
* MsFanservice: Is considered this by the men who do not consider her a vile whore.
* NotAMorningPerson: Is certainly not if Shibou's chapters are any indication- she is allergic both to leaving her bed and putting on clothes, and tends to get up around mid-day.
* OddFriendship / IntergenerationalFriendship: With Lady Shinki, an old woman from a desert region, when she herself is a woman in her prime from a snowy region.
* SexForServices: Apparently a common gambit of hers, but only seen explicitly when [[spoiler:she tries to manipulate Yuugenmagan this way]].
* ShoutOut: Her heirloom, the hakkero, is a reference to her Canon counterpart's WeaponOfChoice, and her whoring ways is a reference to the {{Fanon}} interpretation of her being something of a village bicycle.
* TheirFirstTime: Marisa's first time was awkward and unpracticed, according to Ser Tachiba. It also resulted in the latter being chewed out by her father and being ordered by threat of death to take care of her bastard.
* WillTheyOrWontThey: She and Ser Shibou Taida have lots of ShipTease together, [[spoiler:but ultimately they don't]].
* TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask: The Shibou chapters show this is most certainly the case as she deals with [[spoiler:the Woodlands under Fujiwara rule]], trying to seem like her decisions are unflinching and resolute, when actually she is highly troubled by the tougher decisions she has to make.

* NotInThisForYourRevolution: Though it's dubious which side they're on at first, [[spoiler:it turns out they're supporting the rebellion only due to Marisa's friendship with Lady Shinki from the Makais]].
* ShoutOut: Their sigil is referred to as a 'hakkero', and indeed Lady Marisa has an heirloom from her mother, [[MythologyGag Mima]], resembling the house sigil. Both of these are a reference to Marisa's mini-hakkero of Canon. Also, Mima being her mother at all counts as one.

! House Kirisame

The rulers of the Rainbow Fort, the northern-most settlement in the Woodlands and nestles within the oak forest that leads up to the Frostbitten Forest. The Rainbow Fort is mostly made of amphibolite, and hence sparkles and is quite resistant to fire. Their current lady, Marisa Kirisame, is known for her promiscuity, and is proud of her bastard children, loving her eldest two, Mystia and Rumia Woods, dearly. Their sigil is a brown octagon with rainbow trapezoid segments surrounding a cyan interior octagon on a white field. According to supplementary material, their motto is the relatively kind-hearted 'The Rainbow Shines Brightly'.

[[folder:In General]]
* CoolHouse: The Rainbow Fort is a Cool ''City'', being made of [[http://jm-derochette.be/images/Roches_metamorphiques/Lame_35_LPA.jpg amphibolite]].
* FairForItsDay: In-universe- the city's culture is highly libertarian compared to the rest of Noros, and hence is seen as debauched by the rest of Noros.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: They are certainly the most progressively-minded house in the Woodlands and hence come off as good-hearted to the reader, but due to DeliberateValuesDissonance come off as disgraceful. Examples include the late Lord Maurice Kirisame marrying a wildling, and Lady Marisa's promiscuity.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Definitely the case compared to the Lunas and the Fujiwaras, who are both TheFundamentalist in one way or another, despite their reputation as being led by a 'noble whore'.
* ViceCity: At least for women who want to use prostitutes just like men: there's a ''nobility-funded whorehouse'' full of man-whores.

Maester to Lady Mokou. Pretty much the only competent member of the household due to being neither naive nor insane.

* DeadpanSnarker: Has a certain sarcasm to her, [[spoiler:and notably is snarky to Mokou prior to death]].
* [[spoiler:DefiantToTheEnd]]: [[spoiler:She eventually becomes a core opposition to Mokou's insane methods of ruling while the City of Flames is under siege, and even before being thrown out the window keeps on disagreeing with her]].
* DemotedToExtra: Compared to her role in Imperishable Night (being a third boss, leading the heroines in the right direction and being midboss and friend to the extra boss), she is certainly this.
* [[spoiler:DestinationDefenestration]]: [[spoiler:Is throuwn out of the City of Flames' watchtower window when she snarks about Mokou's insanity one too many times]].
* OnlySaneMan: Pretty much her role to the Fujiwaras. [[spoiler:She dies for her sanity during one of Mokou's breakdowns]].
