    Duncan Rosenblatt
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9703759_256_k925777.jpg
Voiced by: Jesse Head

A high school teen with a typical suburban soccer mom who wants him to get into a good college and a 120-foot firebreathing dragon father, who wants him to follow in his footsteps—conquering the Earth and inheriting the throne of King of Kaiju; they share custody. Like every other teenager, he struggles to fit in with his peers. His being half-dragon further complicates matters. Duncan is completely resigned to his outcast status and has stopped caring all that much. His awkward family arrangement forces him and his mother to move a lot.

  • Adaptational Attractiveness: While his comic book self wasn't unattractive, his skin in the movie is still rather orange but it looks more tamed compared to the comic and overall looks more human and doesn't gain his more scaley appearance until after his first transformation.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Duncan even calls himself a "homing beacon" for bullies.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Justified. Due to his heritage, he has orange skin.
  • Berserk Button: Do not harm the people he cares about. Such as when he went berserk on Abandon and Astaroth for nearly killing his friends. Or when his father Belloc attempted to crush Isabel.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • The "Archie" for Isabel's "Betty" (a new friend for Duncan, low on their school's social status, and a kaiju expert) to Jenna's "Veronica" (Love at First Sight for him and the Student Council President of their school).
    • The "Veronica" (mysterious son of the Kaiju King) to Kenny's "Betty" (the resident "loser" of the school and Isabel's long-time friend) for Isabel's "Archie".
  • Breath Weapon: His main ability is being able to breathe fire. It's even in the title.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Duncan waste no time laying into his father for never being part of life for years and now expects him to be the next King of Kaiju.
  • Chick Magnet: Both Isabel and Jenna have shown a romantic interest in him.
  • Dumb Blonde: Downplayed. Duncan is a Hot-Blooded, angsty teen but isn't an idiot.
  • Flight: Grows wings later on that allows him to fly.
  • Freakiness Shame: Duncan is very self-conscious of his orange skin, and later, scaley skin.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has blonde hair and genuinely wants to do good.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He easily loses his temper, especially with someone he doesn't like.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: The first human-Kaiju hybrid.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's a very hot-headed person and often lets loose in the heat of a fight.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: He doesn't want to be the next Kaiju king or a kaiju at all. He just wants to blend in.
  • Improbable Hairstyle: The right part of Duncan's hair manages to stay on that side.
  • Interspecies Romance: He (a kaiju/human hybrid) is possibly developing a romance with Jenna (a human).
  • Momma's Boy: Justified. Duncan is very close to his mother because she isn't afraid of him and is always looking out for his best interest.
  • Morality Pet: Belloc is not winning any "Parent of the Year" awards but he's shown to genuinely care for Duncan. His son and Margaret are probably the only beings in the world to have a positive effect on him.
  • Nice Guy: Hot-headed he may be, but Duncan has a good heart.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Inverted. Duncan starts off knowing about his heritage but wants to be normal.
  • Playing with Fire: Due to Duncan being half Kaiju, he can breathe fire.
  • Really Moves Around: Duncan often moves around a lot because of the fights he gets into.
  • Red Is Heroic: He wears a red jacket and is the angsty but heroic protagonist.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's the hot-headed, aggressive, and passionate red oni to Kenny's calm, timid, and soft-spoken blue oni. Also Duncan prefers a red jacket while Kenny wears a blue hoodie.
  • Relative Button: He went berserk when Abadonn and Astaroth attacked the people he cared about.
  • Super-Strength: His Kaiju ancestry allows him greater strength than an average human.
  • Super-Toughness: Duncan can take many hits from the giant Kaiju without being scathed by any of their hits.
  • Took a Level in Badass: While Duncan was pretty tough, strong, and agile before, these skills grew even more after his father dropped him into a pit of lava. Not only did Duncan grow tougher and stronger, but he also gained the ability to fly.
  • Unstoppable Rage: In his Kaiju transformation, he is overcome with pure rage and anger which he then starts to let loose his inner bloodlust which becomes his primary resource for fighting.

    Margaret Rosenblatt
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/personajesdefirebreatherduncanmargaretbellocbarnes.jpg
Voiced by: Dana Delany

Duncan's human mom and Belloc's wife, who just wants her son to have a normal life...or as close to normal as he can get.

  • Action Mom: Margaret, in the movie at least. Flies jets, shoots, threatens Belloc, and means it.
  • Dude Magnet: Won the love of a Kaiju and the unwanted kind from Barnes.
  • Interspecies Romance: Margaret (human) had a relationship with Belloc (Kaiju).
  • Mama Bear: She'll do anything for her son. In a more subdued example, Margaret was rightfully pissed at both Kenny and Jenna for their actions toward her son (the former for revealing Duncan's heritage out of jealous rage and the latter for brushing her son off.)
  • Morality Pet: She probably is the only true person (besides Duncan) to have a positive effect on Belloc.
  • Nice Girl: She has a friendly personality.

    Belloc
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/firebreather_kaiju1.jpg

Belloc is the king of an ancient race of monsters known as Kaiju. He is the father of Duncan Rosenblatt, the husband of Margaret Rosenblatt, and King of all Kaiju.

  • Interspecies Romance: Belloc (Kaiju) had a relationship with Margaret (human).
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: There's no doubt Belloc can be a jerkass, but he does care about his family.
  • Kick the Dog: He needlessly pins Isabel with his tail, likely just to get a reaction out of Duncan. It wasn't strong enough to kill her but it was an unnecessarily petty action to do.
  • Papa Wolf: Let himself be captured so Duncan could be safe from harm.

    Agent "Blitz" Barnes
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/personajesdefirebreatherduncanmargaretbellocbarnes9.jpg
Voiced by: Reed Diamond

An undercover MEGTAF agent posing as the high school gym teacher, “Blitz” Barnes watches over Duncan to make sure he keeps a low profile.

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Uses Duncan to try and find Belloc's lair? Check. Protects with all he's got when they're free-falling? Double check.

    Jenna Shwartzendruber
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/personajesdefirebreatherjennaisabelkennytroy2.jpg
Voiced by: Amy Davidson

The Student Council President of Duncan's school and his primary love interest.

  • Betty and Veronica: The "Betty" (Love at First Sight for Duncan and the Student Council President of their school) to Isabel's "Veronica" (a new friend for Duncan, low on their school's social status, and a kaiju expert) for Duncan's "Archie".
  • Dude Magnet: Just ask Duncan, Troy, and a couple of her other male classmates.
  • Interspecies Romance: She (a human) is possibly developing a romance with Duncan (a kaiju/human hybrid).
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Her reaction after she snubs Duncan at the homecoming after learning about his kaiju ancestry.
  • Nice Girl: Jenna is an overall friendly person and was regretful over snubbing Duncan after learning over him being the son of the Kaiju King.
  • Student Council President: Of her school.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl (wears feminine clothing and abhors dissecting frogs) to Isabel's Tomboy (wears masculine clothing and is a resident kaiju fangirl).
  • Took a Level in Badass: Went from being terrified and running away from kaiju to actively shooting one down with a gun to protect Duncan.

    Isabel Vasques
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/personajesdefirebreatherjennaisabelkennytroy.jpg
Voiced by: Tia Texada

Isabel Vasques is a close friend of Duncan's and has a romantic interest in him. She is also the best friend of Kenny Rogers.

  • Ambiguously Brown: Given her dark skin and full name, she's most likely of Hispanic descent.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • The "Veronica" (a new friend for Duncan, low on their school's social status, and a kaiju expert) to Jenna's "Betty" (Love at First Sight for Duncan and the Student Council President of their school) for Duncan's "Archie".
    • The "Archie" for Kenny's "Betty" (the resident "loser" of the school and Isabel's long-time friend) and Duncan's "Veronica" (mysterious son of the Kaiju King).
  • Fangirl: Her profile states she's "a quintessential Kaiju fangirl. She spends most of her time tracking MEGTAF reports and sharpening her Kaiju expertise".
  • Hopeless Suitor: She has a crush on Duncan, but he's interested in Jenna.
  • Loving a Shadow: Discussed. In a fit of jealous rage, Kenny states that the only reason Isabel is interested in Duncan is that she's a kaiju fangirl and Duncan is the son of the Kaiju King. Whether this is true or not is up in the air, although Isabel does show interest in Duncan before even learning about Belloc being his dad.
  • Oblivious to Love: Doesn't know that Kenny has a crush on her.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy (wears masculine clothing and is a resident kaiju fangirl) to Jenna's Girly Girl (wears feminine clothing and abhors dissecting frogs).

    Kenny Rogers
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/personajesdefirebreatherjennaisabelkennytroy15.jpg
Voiced by: Dante Basco

A friend of Duncan Rosenblatt. He is also best friends with Isabel Vasques, who he has a one-sided infatuation with.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Kenny is frequently picked on by Troy and the other jocks. Thankfully, he has Isabel and Duncan as friends.
  • Betty and Veronica: The "Betty" (the resident "loser" of the school and Isabel's long-time friend) to Duncan's "Veronica" (mysterious son of the Kaiju King) for Isabel's "Archie".
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Really didn't like the idea of Duncan showing an interest in Isabel or vice versa.
  • Goth: Implied with his choice of dark clothing.
  • Hopeless Suitor: He has a crush on Isabel, but she's interested in Duncan.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Rats out Duncan's true heritage out of jealousy because of Isabel's romantic interest in him. Later, Kenny apologizes for what he did, immediately after luring a Kaiju away to protect Isabel.
  • Minor Living Alone: Kenny's profile did state he was "virtually parent-less".
  • Shout-Out: His entire name is one to the famous country singer.

    Troy Adams
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/personajesdefirebreatherjennaisabelkennytroy9.jpg
Voiced by: Josh Keaton

The "king of the jocks" and "alpha bully". Troy's Gang instantly targets Duncan. He and Jenna used to date, but he just doesn't understand that their relationship is in the past tense.

  • Big Man on Campus: Gives off this vibe. Though how universally straight he plays this trope varies from student to student.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Matching brown hair and eyes.
  • Freudian Excuse: After seeing his aggressive father, it's no wonder as to where Troy gets his antagonistic personality from.
  • Jerk Jock: "King of the jocks and alpha bully".
  • Le Parkour: Though he's no real match for Duncan in this department (or any other for that matter), he does get props for managing to keep up with him in a school-wide chase.
  • Pet the Dog: There are moments in the movie that show Troy isn't a complete jerk.
    • He warns Jenna to stay away from Duncan. This isn't because of a Crazy Jealous Guy personality, but because he legitimately thinks Duncan is a threat and doesn't want Duncan to hurt her.
    • After Kenny, the very same kid he bullied earlier, is injured luring away a kaiju, Troy goes over to him to help him up and get him away from the monster.
