Hayze

Hayze is a Shadow dragon from the Dark Lands, brought to Warfang by Commander Lynerius as his ward. In Warfang, Hayze experiences life as pariah for his kins' elemental origins, as dark dragons were often viewed as demonic and evil due to their creation.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Dark dragons are frequently referred to as evil and demonic throughout the webcomic, as Hayze is the only dark dragon in Warfang he gets the brunt of the discrimination associated with it.
  • Ambiguous Situation: A driving question of the series is as follows: why did Lynerius take Hayze from the Dark Lands as his ward when Warfang is likely far more dangerous to a dark dragon than the dark lands? Arcadier originally believed that Lynerius had sired Hayze, but in the present she is more inclined to believe that he killed Hayze's birth family and took him in out of guilt. Notably, Hayze himself demonstrates potentially half-blood features in his eyes, whose slit pupils and mid-tone sclera are the only arrangement found in both half-bloods and full dark dragons, but Lynerius refuses to let Hayze refer to him as anything more than a guardian.
  • Casting a Shadow: Hayze is a Shadow dragon, and has a link to the artificial element of darkness similar to other dragons' attunements to the natural elements. He primarily demonstrates the ability to move quickly by transforming himself into a patch of darkness; later, during a sparring session with a young Malefor, he also uses a Breath Weapon consisting of a cloud of choking, smoky shadows.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite the origin of Hayze's race, in no way does that prove he's a demonic dark dragon as the higher-ups of Warfang believe him to be.
  • Elemental Personalities: Matching his element of Shadow, Hayze is taciturn and reclusive, preferring to stay by himself rather than to interact with others of his own accord.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: While most dragons have human-like eyes, he has grey sclerae and vertical pupils. Lore notes in the comic's website state that this is a relatively common trait for dark dragons and halfbloods, but entirely unknown in non-dark ones.

Malefor

Malefor is a unique purple dragon that's been prophesied for generations to bring about great change to the dragon race. Unlike his main game counterpart who is an evil, manipulative, power hungry megalomaniac, the Malefor in the webcomic is a happy and giddy young teenager who still has yet to discover his element. For tropes related to Malefor's future incarnation in the original series, go here; all tropes here on this page pertain to his appearance in the webcomic. Reintroduced tropes will only appear when they're given new context.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Compared to evil bastard depicted in mainline Legends series, the Malefor in the webcomic is a cheerful and friendly child, as he has yet to fall into darkness.
  • Cheerful Child: Malefor is often shown to be quite chipper and giddy, even when in sparring with other dragons.
  • The Chosen One: As a purple dragon, Malefor is destined to bring great changes to the world. Those who're aware of the series the webcomic is based upon know that this doesn't mean the best of outcomes.
  • Creepy Child: Despite his pleasant and cheerful demeanor, Malefor often comes off as rather unsettling to other young dragons. Even in his sparing with Hayze and his flightmates, Malefor demonstrated an almost sadistic glee when fighting that bordered on blood knight territory.
  • Eager Rookie: He's sixteen years old by the time he was introduced in the webcomic, but unlike other dragons his age, he still had not discovered his breath element yet. When he finally does discover it, he was up all night awaiting elemental training. This eagerness turns sour in the main TLoS series, as its said to be what drives him down the path of evil.
  • Meaningful Name: In the webcomic, Malefor is named after the realm's tallest mountain, the Mountain of Malefor, which was formerly called "Mountain of Maledict Forest". This is because he was assumed to have an unknown/new element and could not be named after his element.
  • Use Your Head: In his sparring with Hayze and his flighmates, Malefor is fond of charging in to attack and closing the distance. This makes sense, given that he still didn't have an element at the time.

Vitreus

Vitreus is a student in the Warfang Temple along with Hayze. He is the son of Frossar, a Commander of the Guard, and a member of the leading Ice clan, Clan Frostspear. He's considered to be Hayze's rival and bully.
  • Abusive Parents: Vitreus was conceived as a martial obligation. As such, neither of his parents show genuine affection towards him and they often barely acknowledge his existence.
  • An Ice Person: As expected of his element, Vitreus can breath and manipulate Ice.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When told to testify during Hayze's trial in front of the Warfang Council, Vitreus is horrified at the conclusion of his Clan and father wanting to execute Hayze.
  • Scars Are Forever: When he tried to tell the guards about Hayze using his Shadow element, he and Hayze got into a fight which resulted in Hayze slashing Vitreus's face. Vitreus could've had the scars healed with red crystals if his father, Frossar, actually allowed him to. However, Frossar forced Vitreus to bear the scars as both a punishment and to make others fear and hate Hayze for being a dark dragon.
  • Spoiled Brat: He starts out as a classical noble brat — entitled, arrogant, abrasive, and eager to lord his position over the other students. This is gradually deconstructed as the comic starts to focus more on the difficulties of growing up in a rigid and demanding noble household and as Vitreous gradually starts to become more aware of how his position is perceived by the non-nobles.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Vitreus is informed that he was one of these by his father after Hayze's "trial". While he was told to keep an eye on Hayze because his family thought Hayze was dangerous to those around him, it turns out afterwards that the Frostspears didn't care about whether Hayze was dangerous or not, and were just looking for an excuse to discredit Lynerius and his clan, something that badly affects Vitreus's trust and confidence in his family.

Lynerius

Commander Lynerius is the most famous living soldier in the dragon realms, a legend among Warfang's inhabitants and a nightmare to Warfang's enemies. His elemental power is so great he is considered an elemental, a living embodiment of Electricity. He is the legal guardian of Hayze, and has been so since he brought the baby shadow dragon from the Dark Lands. Although he adamantly denies being the boy's father.
  • Arranged Marriage: Since Lynerius is Tordner's first born, heir to The Stormbringer Clan, and one of the few Elementals in existence. Tordner has tried in vain for years to marry his son and have him produce heirs. After the incident involving Hayze's attempted escape and trial resulting in the Guardians taking custody of his ward, Lynerius gave up any resistence to his father's demands. Much to Tordner shock and regret.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Lynerius is a very unapproachable person in the normal course of things, and short-tempered and acerbic in personality. He keeps his relationship with Hayze fairly formal, in particular rejecting the latter's attempts to call him his dad, and can be incredibly rude towards people he doesn't feel are worth his time. Nonetheless, he appears to have real affection for Hayze despite his harsh demeanor, seen in instances such as his lying to Frossar to protect Hayze or being beside himself with anger when Hayze is arrested and brought to trial.
  • Kill the Parent, Raise the Child: In Chapter 3, when discussing Hayze's possible origins, Hayze mentions that he had been told that Lynerius must have killed his original family before taking him to Warfang. Arcadier concedes that this is probable.
Hayze: Others say he must have killed my family...
Arcadier: ... that is more probable. He always struck me as a man of many regrets.
  • Parental Substitute: Played with. Lynerius serves as Hayze's primary parental figure in Warfang, is responsible for his upbringing, is one of the few adults who are reliably on his side when trouble happens, and is shown to hold genuine affection for him. However, he also explicitly rejects Hayze's attempt at referring to his as his dad, stating that he isn't his parent.
  • "World's Best" Character: Lynerius is an elemental, a title given to dragons who have achieved the absolute highest possible level of power in and mastery of their element. Elementals are vanishingly rare, and Lynerius consequently has a good claim towards being the most powerful and skilled user of Electricity currently alive.
