Eirenus

One of the Black King's closest underling. Along the way, she hinders your journey, targeting Phoena specifically. A very confrontational demon, the Volunteer Army will have to face her and her lackeys the most during Book 1.

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Her skin color is purple.
  • "Blind Idiot" Translation: A victim of Gumi's translation in the global version; Eirenus was constantly referred as a male despite all evidences to the contrary.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: She's evil and she knows it. Unlike other Demons you faced in Demon Raids, she has no redeeming qualities. Except it turns out that she was someone who fought against the Black Army as well, until her allies were defeated and the trauma causing her to be evil.
  • The Dragon: One of the two for the Black King.
  • Starter Villain: While she lasted longer than typical examples of the trope, it's obvious by mid-story that she isn't the biggest threat in the Black Army.
  • Stripperiffic: Her armor pretty much just cover the naughty bits and little else.
  • Troll: She just likes to toy with everyone, but especially with Phoena.
  • You Are Number 6: Has a tattoo on her, like several other demons. Her tattoo is number three, though its significance are unclear.

The Black Knight

One of the Black King's closest underling. An intimidating figure wearing an equally fearsome-looking mask, he starts impending your journey mid-story, when it's apparent that just Eirenus fighting the Volunteer Army won't be enough. His real identity is the Hero from another universe, turned to dark side after his war against the Black Army ended with both Pirika and Phoena died.

  • Alternate Universe: He either came from this or a Bad Future. Both conclusions had a depressing end.
  • The Chosen One: He owns a Chronicle. Considering the circumstances in his universe, it might be a Tragic Keepsake from his universe's Phoena.
  • Cool Mask: A rather cool-looking black helmet with four eyes.
  • The Dragon: One of the two for the Black King.
  • Fallen Hero: Due to him failing to protect Phoena and Pirika in his universe. Part of the reason why he joined the Black Army in the main universe is to find another way to save them, even if he must drag them into the dark side.
  • The Heavy: While Eirenus is at best can be considered a mere enforcer, his presence and his deeds has bigger influence on the story as a whole.
  • Locked into Strangeness: Perhaps a side effect from the Blackening, since even in his time as the Hero, he still have the same hair colors and complexion as the main universe's hero.
  • My Greatest Failure: See Fallen Hero above.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He's always referred as The Black Knight. When Phoena found out about his identity, she refuses to address him by the Hero's name, commenting that the Hero she knew won't succumb to the despair.
  • Palette Swap: In the VN section of the game, his past self's sprite is the same as the Hero, albeit with a damp and dark color scheme.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: While his armor is mostly black, there's a bit of red in his helmet. He's also definitely evil.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: He's the Hero from another universe.
  • Tragic Monster: His failure to protect his world turned him from a ideal, loving Hero to what he is now.
  • Walking Spoiler: His identity alone brings another conflict to the story.

The Black King

Voiced by: Akio Ōtsuka (movies)

The leader of the scourge that is the Black Army. His army has ruined the lives of lots of people in Yggdra, and it's up to the Heroes to bring back peace to the land. It turns out, he's merely pawn in a larger scheme of things, as his Chronicle flew to the land where the scourge originated...

  • Badass Cape: His cape is rather swanky. And if you look rather closely, someone else in your party is wearing a similar-looking one. Hmm...
  • Big Bad: Leads the Black Army and the source of all the bad things happening in the story. At least, in Yggdra.
  • The Chosen One: He has a Chronicle, although its usage are rather dubious.
  • Dying as Yourself: After finally being defeated, he regained his senses for a short while before dying.
  • Locked into Strangeness: Perhaps a side effect from the Blackening, since his past form looks relatively normal.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He is Phoena's father.
  • Nice Guy: In his time as Phoena's father, he is shown to love her daughter very much. Notably, even he can't stomach Phoena's cooking, though he persevered anyway.
  • Obviously Evil: Squinty eyes, dark expression, unhealthy complexion, and a swanky-looking cape. Yeah, he's a stand-up guy, that's for sure. Except not really, at least in the past.
  • One-Winged Angel: Turned into a dragon in your final fight against him.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Of the true powers behind the Black Army.
  • Walking Spoiler: Just like the Black Knight, he isn't all that he seems to be, that's for sure.
