Dave Seville’s a songwriter as well as the guardian of the Chipmunks and the Chipettes as of the second live action movie. While Dave struggles to remain calm and objective, Alvin often irritates him, causing Dave to yell "Alvin!" to which Alvin responds with "Okay!" Dave plays piano and the guitar.

David ‘Dave’ Seville was originally Ross Bagdasarian’s stage name.
  • Berserk Button: “ALVIN!!!!!
  • Butt Monkey
  • Can’t Tie His Bow: Simon has to help him with his bow while they’re talking in Chipwrecked, as Dave’s getting ready to have dinner with the captain.
  • Characterization Marches On: Depending on the medium, and the portrayer:

Bagdasarian (Sr.) — rather strict, overbearing and having a short fuse making him quick to losing his cool.

Bagdasarian (Jr.) — more laid back, easy going while still being easily flustered.

Lee — seemingly like a surrogate father-figure who’s trying to do his best.
  • Demoted to Extra: Due to a prop mishap during a charity concert crippling him in The Squeakquel, thus putting Dave out of commission for the rest of the movie, prompting him to send the Chipmunks with a relative.
This is probably because Jason Lee was busy with My Name Is Earl at the time.
  • Four Philosophy Ensemble: The Realist.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The Phlegmatic.
  • Friend to All Living Things: The reason why Vinnie essentially left the boys at his doorstep in the 80s/90s cartoon show.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: When Ross (Sr.) voiced him
  • Inksuit Actor: The Alvin Show Dave is the supposed caricature of Ross (Sr.), sometimes having that vertical line on Dave's chin appears, kinda like how Bagdasarian has a slight dimple in his chin.
  • Mr. Fanservice
  • Role Reprisal: Despite Jason Lee being the new Dave Seville, Ross Jr. still provides his vocals on a couple of soundtracks.
  • Spiky Hair: In Meet Frankenstein (though it may cross as anime hair) and Meet the Wolfman.
  • Stage Name: For Rostom “Ross” Bagdasarian.
  • Team Dad

    The Chipmunks

Trio:

Three singing, anthropomorphic chipmunk brothers under the management and parental vision of Dave Seville.
  • Baby Talk: In Little Alvin and the Mini-Munks.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • The Chipmunks saves an unconscious Stanley the Eagle in a nick of time before he could fall off a statue in the episode “Eagle in Love” of The Alvin Show.
    • Comes to “Frankie” the Frankenstein Monster’s defense at the end of Meet Frankenstein.
  • Birds of a Feather: When the Chipmunks are with their respective individual Chipette counterpart.

    • Red = Alvin
    • Blue = Simon
    • Green = Theodore
  • Comic Trio
    • Moe = Alvin
    • Larry = Simon
    • Curly = Theodore
  • Disappeared Dad: Their biological father has never been seen, mentioned or referenced in the 80s/90s cartoon.
    • Disappeared Dad/Missing Mom: In the 2007 movie, Simon explains to Dave that chipmunks only care for their young for a week followed by Alvin stating their parents were hippies and left early to join a commune.
  • Distressed Dude: All of them in The Chipmunk Adventure.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: Simon and Theodore started off having little personality outside more well behaved counterparts to Alvin. Starting from the 80s series, they gain more individual spotlight and foibles of their own.
  • Door Stop Baby: Well, babies, but anyway, this is how Dave first met them in the 80s/90s show.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Despite Alvin being older, Alvin is the foolish to Simon's responsible. This is reversed in Chipwrecked where Alvin is responsible and Simon is foolish.
  • Freudian Trio:
  • Happily Adopted: To guess who.
  • Rock Trio: Although they tend to play the basic musical instruments of this trop, the three do occasionally play other instruments as well.
    • Guitar = Alvin
    • Piano = Simon
    • Drums = Theodore

The oldest brother and lead vocalist of the band, Alvin is an impulsive and charming who always seems t make up hare-brained schemes to get what his goal is at the time, whether it be trying to help his brothers, keeping Dave from figuring something out, or getting out of a sticky situation.

Despite being the tallest, Simon’s the middle child with an IQ north of Einstein, possessing a dry sense of humor as well as a keen wit. He takes charge when Alvin goes too far with his hair brained schemes. Simon loves Alvin, although he secretly worries that they share the same gene pool.

Not only is he the child of innocence as well as the youngest, but Theodore is shy, loving, sensitive, chubby, gullible, trusting and naïve. In short, he is an easy target for Alvin's manipulations, often holding the swing vote between his two brothers' choices of action. Simon appeals to Theodore's better nature while Alvin goes straight to bribery.

    The Chipettes

The distaff counterparts to the Chipmunks.

  • Character Development: The Chipettes were originally conceived as female mirrors of The Chipmunks, however, over time, they slowly began to develop more dimension and personality that distinguished them from their respective Chipmunk counterpart.

The lead singer and the oldest, Brittany has a pleasing facial and physical appearance, though at times can be vain and self-serving with the extreme desire to have whatever she wants, but is still very caring.

Voiced by:
JANICE KARMAN – A Chipmunk Christmas, Alvin and the Chipmunks/The Chipmunks cartoon, The Chipmunk Adventure, Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman, Little Alvin and the Mini-Munks, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel Video Game (cutsenees only) & Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Video Game (cutscenes only)albums

Recurring Characters
    Clyde Crashcup
Voiced by:
SHEPHARD MENKEN – The Alvin Show & The Chipmunks episode “Back to Our Future”
CHARLES BERENDT – A Chipmunk Christmas

Clyde Crashcup is a scientist, though he’s primarily an inventor rather than a researcher, whose experiments invariable fail. He typically would invent something by taking a pencil out of his lab coat's pocket and drawing a picture in midair of his conception: the picture would then become the actual object.

    Miss Beatrice Miller

The Seville’s’ myopic, elderly next door neighbor as well as the Chipmunks’ babysitter, Miss Miller is the Chipettes’ guardian, introduced in the first episode of the fourth season.
  • Apron Matron
  • Butt Monkey
  • The Cameo/The Faceless: Is only heard screaming “DAAAAAVVVVIIIIIID!!!” on the phone in Meet the Wolfman because Alvin scared the Chipettes to death and they ran all the way to their house in panic.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Sometimes has strong traces of this, especially in A Chipmunk Adventure, though it's considerably toned down in later seasons as she becomes established as the parental figure for the Chipettes.
  • Drives Like Crazy
  • The Gambling Addict: In one episode, though she gets better.
  • I Was Quite a Looker
  • The Klutz: She makes Jeanette look well-coordinated and graceful.
  • Not So Different: Somewhat for the Chipettes.
  • Role Reprisal: Goodman reprised her role of Miss Miller in Meet Frankenstein as well as Meet the Wolfman nine years after the 80s/90s series.
  • Spanner in the Works: It's thanks to her running the Vorsteins's car off the road (while on the way to pick up Dave from the airport) in Chipmunk Adventure that Klaus and Claudia are finally apprehended at the end.
  • Team Mom

    Ian Hawke
Portrayed by:
DAVID CROSSAlvin and the Chipmunks 2007 movie, The Squeakqual & Chipwrecked

The founder and former chairman of JETT Records, Ian Hawke attended college with his ex-roommate Dave and Claire Wilson. When Dave first entered the headquarters, Ian wanted to be his boss since he was no longer Dave's college roommate; instead, he became his "best friend."
  • Bald of Evil
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive
  • Everyone Went to School Together: Roommates with Dave in college and probably knew Claire Wilson who also went to the same college.
  • Greed
  • Heel-Face Turn: In Chipwrecked, though still kind of a dick, but he does help Dave, the Chipmunks, the Chipettes and Zoe get off the island.
  • Jerkass
  • Jerkass Has a Point: In The Squeakquel, calls the principal out for being biased in favor of the Chipmunks and not allowing a democratic vote.
  • Manipulative Bastard
  • Meaningful Name: Hawks are natural enemies of chipmunks.
  • Villain Ball: Ian's plan in The Squeakquel worked fine until he threatened the Chipettes just because they all wanted equal partnership in the performance.explaination

Series
    The Alvin Show

Leonardo

Whispering by:

Clyde Crashcup’s short assistant, Leonardo doesn’t speak, only whispering into Clyde’s ear, informing him of his ideas. Leonardo frequently invents or perfects an invention whereas Clyde takes the credit from him, not to mention he’s usually emotionally displeased when Clyde insults his intelligence.

Stanley the Eagle

As his name may suggest, Stanley’s an eagle who befriends the Chipmunks.

Daisy Bell(e)

Voiced By:

Daisy Bell(e) is a girl who pesters the Chipmunks at times or tries to be friends with them. Appears in “Three Blind Mice,” “Sir Alvin” and “Bicycle Built for Two.”

  • Not Good With Rejection: Rides away upset from Theodore when she tries flirting with him, but the green-clad Chipmunk only notices her new bike. Upon receiving the same response with Simon, Daisy promptly destroys his erector set he was finishing up with her bike. Daisy then gets into an argument with Alvin when he comments on her bike instead of her.
  • Spell My Name with an “E”: Is it “Bell” as in the last name or “Belle” as in a second name, the world may never know.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Sweet to others (like Dave) but a pest to the Chipmunks.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail

Sam Valiant

Voiced by:
(possibly) ROSTOM “ROSS” BAGDASARIAN (SR.) if not DON MESSICK

A fast talking short man in a tan trench coat, with only his nose visible in which he relies his decisions on by what smells and, combined with his carelessness, causes destructions. Sam Valiant’s quick to place blame on or con the person closest to them. Appears in “Sam Valiant, Private Nose,” “Sam Valiant: Real Estate” and “Dude Ranch.”

Mrs. Frumpington

Voiced by:
LEE PATRICK
Singing:
JUNE FORAY – “Squares”

A very annoying neighbor woman who’s the head of a group called ‘The Ladies of the Squear.’ who detests the Chipmunks’ music, Mrs. Frumpington can be seen as representing the ‘proper’ ladies and acceptable societal behavior. Appears in “Squares” and “Good Manners.”

JP Lester

JP Lester is a ghost who’s sent to haunt Chesley Estate in hopes to win the Ghost of the Year award for the umpteenth time. Appears in “Haunted House.”
  • Butt Monkey: Though not intentionally considering Dave and the Chipmunks don’t notice him until the very end.
  • A Day in the Limelight: His onetime episode appearance focuses a little more on his exploits of trying to scare Dave and the Chipmunks from Chesley Estate.
  • Evil Laugh: Does this before failing to scare Alvin.
  • The Noseless: Well, he is a literal bed sheet ghost
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Being an actual bedsheet ghost not only qualifies but he's solid enough that Dave's able to pick him up and hold him, not to mention being able to fit into tight places like in a can..
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: We do never learn what the ‘J’ and ‘P’ stand for . . .
  • Third-Person Person: Refers to himself by "J. P.," sometimes adding "Lester."

Chuck Wagon

A southern boy with a distinct southern accent, Chuck Wagon is Dave’s second cousin, twice removed on his father's side. Lacking self-confidence because everybody tells him he’s not good at anything, Chuck comes for a visit in hopes to find something he is good at and the Chipmunks help him. Appears in “Hillbilly Son.”
  • Apologizes a Lot: Each time he fails a task given by the Chipmunks, even when he thinks his signing (which he is good at but can’t see it) is obtrusive.
  • Book Dumb: Took a VERY long time just to read from a basal readers book that’s basically a brand x version of Dick and Jane.
  • Clothing Damage: Though at the hem of his shirt and pants.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Trying to find something he is good at but fails to see he can sing country tunes to which he considers nothing special.
  • Does Not Like Shoes: To go with his ‘hillbilly’ look.
  • The Eeyore: Poor guy lacks self-confidence because everyone (minus Dave and the Chipmunks) telling him he can’t do anything.
  • Genre Blindness: Thinks his country music and singing is nothing special, quite the contrary actually.
  • Nice Hat: His coonskin cap definitely counts.
  • Punny Name: A chuckwagon or chuck wagon is a type of wagon historically used to carry food and cooking equipment on the prairies of the United States and Canada.

    Alvin and the Chipmunks/The Chipmunks

Vinny

Voiced by:
JUNE FORAY – First appearance
JANICE KARMAN – Second appearance

A kind, good natured anthropomorphic chipmunk, Vinny is Alvin, Simon and Theodore’s biological mother who left her babies babies with Dave Seville because he was nice to the forest animals because she realized that her boys wouldn't survive the journey if she brought them with her when all the animals in the forest were forced to abandoned their homes due to a horrible winter storm. When spring came, Vinny finally returned to get them but she saw how happy they were with Dave, and thought they would be better off with him. Appears in “A Chipmunk Reunion” and “Vinny’s Visit.”
  • Chipmunk out of Forest: When she comes to visit the boys in the city where to brought her animal friends with her, much to Dave’s chagrin, and causes trouble in the process like buying a lot of stuff.
  • Granola Girl: A mild example.
  • The Faceless/The Voiceless: In her first appearance, she wears a hood which hides her face and doesn't speak.
  • In the Hood: When she first leaves her boys on Dave’s doorstep in the flashback.
  • Missing Mom
  • Mommy Had A Good Reason For Abandoning You/Parents as People: A single mother, she reveals to her sons note  that she left them on Dave's doorstep because she genuinely couldn't support all four of them in a particularly snowy and cold winter. At one point, she did try to get them but after seeing how happy they were with David, she decides to leave them to their "new life".
  • Only One Name
  • Trademark Favorite Soup: Acorn soup.

Grandma & Grandpa Seville

Dave’s parents as well as the Chipmunks’ adopted paternal grandparents. Both appear in “Grandma and Grandpa Seville,” “How You Gonna Keep ‘Em down on the Farm?” and “Back to Dave’s Future.”

Both

In their first two appearances, they were farmers living in fictional South Spoon Ranch. Though in their last, they lived just a couple blocks from Dave’s school whereas Grandpa Seville is an accountant and Grandma Seville is possibly a typical housewife.
  • The Cameo: Both appear in “Merry Christmas, Mr. Carrol.”
  • Cloudcuckoolander: In their first appearances.
  • Hey, You!: They are even referred to as ‘grandpa’ and ‘grandma’ by each other!
  • Nice Couple: Or at least subverted for Grandpa Seville in his last appearance.
  • No Name Given
  • Series Continuity Error: Farmers in their first two appearances, but Grandpa’s became an accountant and Grandma’s possibly a housewife in their last.

Grandma Seville

She appears as the typical grandmotherly figure with her hair in a bun in “Grandma and Grandpa Seville,” and “How You Gonna Keep ‘Em down on the Farm?,” not to mention being about a head shorter than her husband. Though, in “Back to Dave’s Future,” she appears taller, hair in a fifties fashion and her face is longer. Then in her cameo in “Merry Christmas, Mr. Carrol,” she’s back to her granny classic look but pudgier.

Grandpa Seville

Voiced by:
ALAN YOUNG – first and second appearance
ROSS BAGDASARIAN (JR.) – third appearance

In “Grandma and Grandpa Seville,” and “How You Gonna Keep ‘Em down on the Farm?,” Grandpa Seville is a tall, lanky man with a full head of hair brushed to one side as well as a bent posture and wears a pair of blue-jean dungarees over his top. In his last appearance “Back to Dave’s Future,” however, he appeared to have gain a lot of weight in his belly, seems to be losing his hair considering there’s little left on top his head and wears a business suit. Though when he appears in “Merry Christmas, Mr. Carrol,” he’s back to being to how he appears in his first two appearances.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Wanted Dave to be an accountant in his last appearance.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: His first two appearances is essentially an animated Alan Young though with a bent posture.
  • Nice Hat: Again, in his first two appearances.

“Uncle” Harry

Voiced by:
ROSS BAGDASARIAN (JR.)

Harry’s a charlatan anthropomorphic scruffy chipmunk who claims to be the Chipmunks’ long lost uncle in hopes to pay off a debt by convincing the boys to work with him to raise money so that they can visit their mother. Overall, Harry uses similar schemes throughout the series to try and get the Chipmunks (as well as Chipettes) to work for him so he can steal their earnings but always seems to backfire. Appears in “Uncle Harry,” “Lights, Camera, Alvin,” “Santa Harry” and “A Little Worm in the Big Apple.”

Marsha

Voiced by:
JANICE KARMAN

Marsha was a young woman who Dave felt he had a strong connection with while dating her. She is also a single mother of three boys named Maxwell, Chucky and Eddy. Appears in “Dave’s Getting Married.”
  • The Ace: Solves the Chipmunks’ problems quite easily, (Alvin hitting the bulls eye with his baseball, Simon with some mathematical if not scientific equation and Theodore with cooking), which gains the Chipmunks liking her.
  • Brainy Blonde: Considering she solved an equation that Simon couldn’t figure out, she’s definitely this.
  • Birds of a Feather: Feels a strong connection with Dave but the only thing holding them back is their boys constant bickering against each other.
  • Dark-Skinned Blond: Though her skin is not too dark but still qualifies.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Marsha was based off Janice Karman.
  • The Ghost: She’s mentioned in “Grounded Chipmunk” but not seen.
  • Nice Gal: Very much so, compared to her boys.
  • Only One Name

Maxwell, Chucky & Eddy

Marsha’s boys:
Light brown hair and brown eyed Maxwell is the tallest of the three, who wears glasses and seems a smidge thinner than Chucky.
Chucky’s the second tallest with blue eyes and flamboyant orange hair and little more physical build than his tallest brother.
Then there’s the obese Eddy who has a visible double chin, the brown eyes to go with his brown hair boy is the shortest of the brothers.

Olivia

An orphan girl living at Miss Grudge’s Orphanage in Australia owned by Miss Grudge, Olivia took care of the Chipettes when they were just infants. While the four became close as sisters, Olivia kept them hidden from the rest of the orphans in fear they'd use her friends ' musical talent for their own benefits. Unfortunately, on the day Olivia’s fortunate to be adopted, Miss Grudge discovers the Chipettes’ singing talent. Grudge has them kidnapped and locked in a ventilation shaft so Olivia won’t be able to take them with her, intending to make money off them. Though the Chipettes do escape, it would be years until they are reunited with Olivia. Appears in “The Chipette Story.”
  • Clothing Damage: At least while at the orphanage. Even her toes where peeping out of her right shoe!
  • Cool Big Sis: For the Chipettes
  • Happily Adopted
  • Nice Girl
  • No Name Given: Her adopted parents.
  • Orphan's Ordeal
  • Only One Name: Subverted. She mentions getting her bracelet from her (birth) mother, so we assume she has one but we also don’t learn her new last name when she’s adopted.
  • Parental Substitute: To the baby Chipettes
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: At least when describing America to the Chipettes:
“The streets are paved with gold and telephone poles are made out of candy cane and all your dreams come true!”
  • The Voiceless: Her adopted father doesn’t say a line either in present time or during the flashback. Her adopted mother has a couple of lines in the flashback though.

Miss Grudge

Voiced by:
(possibly) JUNE FORAY

A very unpleasant woman who runs the “Miss Grudge’s Oprhanage” in Australia where Olivia and the Chipettes lived, Miss Grudge sought a way to make money by forcing kids to sing for her. When she finds out the Chipettes not only can talk but sing as well, Miss Grudge promptly kidnaps and locks them away in hopes to use their singing for her own needs. Fortunately, they escaped. Appears in “The Chipette Story.”

  • Blackmail: Threatens to tell Miss Grudge about the Chipettes’ signing ability unless Olivia gives the bracelet given by her mother to Eva. Until the Chipettes decided to steal it back, alerting Grudge to the commotion Eva and the Chipettes caused does the woman learn about the Chipettes. Miss Grudge wouldn’t have learned they could talk if Brittany hadn’t opened her mouth, thus Eva revealing the fact they can sing.
  • Bratty Half-Pint
  • The Bully
  • Hair Decorations: Wears a blue ribbon like a headband.
  • Only One Name

Despite his elderly appearance, Uncle Willy, nicknamed “Uncle Adventure,” is a strong and active man who’s determined to not let anyone tell him how young he can act as a result of his age.

Animated Films
    The Chipmunk Adventure

A pair of Europeans running international diamond smuggling ring, running out of ways of delivering five million dollars of diamonds to customers without government interference. Both find an opportunity when they overhear Alvin and Brittany arguing over who would win an actual race around the world, to which the Furschtein have the Chipmunks and Chipettes travel in different directions around the world in hot air balloons, stopping at twelve different locations, where they would deliver a doll of themselves full of diamonds and receive a doll of the other team full of money. This is in hopes that [Inspector] Jamal won’t expect them.
