Dave Seville’s a songwriter as well as the guardian of the Chipmunks and the Chipettes as of the second live action movie. While Dave struggles to remain calm and objective, Alvin often irritates him, causing Dave to yell "Alvin!" to which Alvin responds with "Okay!" Dave plays piano and the guitar.

David ‘Dave’ Seville was originally Ross Bagdasarian’s stage name.
  • Berserk Button: “ALVIN!!!!!
  • Butt Monkey
  • Can’t Tie His Bow: Simon has to help him with his bow while they’re talking in Chipwrecked, as Dave’s getting ready to have dinner with the captain.
  • Characterization Marches On: Depending on the medium, and the portrayer:

Bagdasarian (Sr.) — rather strict, overbearing and having a short fuse making him quick to losing his cool.

Bagdasarian (Jr.) — more laid back, easy going while still being easily flustered.

Lee — seemingly like a surrogate father-figure who’s trying to do his best.
  • Demoted to Extra: Due to a prop mishap during a charity concert crippling him in The Squeakquel, thus putting Dave out of commission for the rest of the movie, prompting him to send the Chipmunks with a relative.
This is probably because Jason Lee was busy with My Name Is Earl at the time.
  • Four Philosophy Ensemble: The Realist.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The Phlegmatic.
  • Friend to All Living Things: The reason why Vinnie essentially left the boys at his doorstep in the 80s/90s cartoon show.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: When Ross (Sr.) voiced him
  • Inksuit Actor: The Alvin Show Dave is the supposed caricature of Ross (Sr.), sometimes having that vertical line on Dave's chin appears, kinda like how Bagdasarian has a slight dimple in his chin.
  • Mr. Fanservice
  • Role Reprisal: Despite Jason Lee being the new Dave Seville, Ross Jr. still provides his vocals on a couple of soundtracks.
  • Spiky Hair: In Meet Frankenstein (though it may cross as anime hair) and Meet the Wolfman.
  • Stage Name: For Rostom “Ross” Bagdasarian.
  • Team Dad: As a stern, but loving father figure to the Chipmunks.

    The Chipmunks

Three singing, anthropomorphic chipmunk brothers under the management and parental vision of Dave Seville.
  • A Cappella: Being singing chipmunks, it comes with the talent. Notable ones reside in the Alvin and the Chipmunks CGI film, where they give their great renditions of "Bad Day" and "Only You".
  • Baby Talk: In Little Alvin and the Mini-Munks.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • The Chipmunks saves an unconscious Stanley the Eagle in a nick of time before he could fall off a statue in the episode “Eagle in Love” of The Alvin Show.
    • Comes to “Frankie” the Frankenstein Monster’s defense at the end of Meet Frankenstein.
  • Birds of a Feather: When the Chipmunks are with their respective individual Chipette counterpart. However, Alvin and Brittany are the exception in that they verge towards Too Much Alike.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The CGI films began to embody this (Theodore is the lightest of his brothers, comparable to blond, while Simon is an apparent brunet with his fur, and Alvin comes in with reddish-brown fur) and now the CG-animated series has them with human hair similar to the Chipettes.
    • Blond = Theodore
    • Brunet = Simon
    • Redhead = Alvin
  • Boy Band: When they dwell into the Pop genre.
  • Child Pop Stars: The Chipmunks' naturally set in as musical acts by choice, and their age throughout the incarnations range from children to teens (CGI films). Dave is their parental guardian, manager, and at times, producer.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: Trope Codifier if not Trope Namer:
    • Red = Alvin
    • Blue = Simon
    • Green = Theodore
  • Clothes Make the Legend: Overlaps with Limited Wardrobe. All three of the chipmunk brothers in general, but specifically Alvin. One half of a pair can wear green, the other half can wear blue, but there probably won't be much recognition unless there's that familiar, red piece of clothing with that huge, yellow letter "A".
  • Comic Trio
    • Moe = Alvin
    • Larry = Simon
    • Curly = Theodore
  • Cover Album: Majority of their discography, you can say.
  • Cover Version: The Chipmunks' modus operandi outside the fourth wall, as they cover music from well known artists or songs. Though they have come out with original music, and their CG-animated series have all original songs so far.
  • Disappeared Dad: Their biological father has never been seen, mentioned or referenced in the 80s/90s cartoon.
    • Disappeared Dad/Missing Mom: In the 2007 movie, Simon explains to Dave that chipmunks only care for their young for a week followed by Alvin stating their parents were hippies and left early to join a commune.
  • Distressed Dude: All of them in The Chipmunk Adventure.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: Simon and Theodore started off having little personality outside more well behaved counterparts to Alvin. Starting from the 80s series, they gain more individual spotlight and foibles of their own.
  • Door Stop Baby: Well, babies, but anyway, this is how Dave first met them in the 80s/90s show.
  • Freudian Trio:
  • Happily Adopted: To guess who.
  • Harmony: Got to give credit to the Bagdasarians, The Chipmunks can do some fantastic harmonies.
  • Nice, Mean and In-Between: Theodore is the nicest of the chipmunks, serving as the Morality Pet to Alvin, who is an egotistical Attention Whore. Simon stays inbetween due to him being the smart one and his constant bickering with Alvin.
  • Rock Trio: Although they tend to play the basic musical instruments of this trope, the three do occasionally play other instruments as well.
    • Guitar = Alvin
    • Keyboard/Bass = Simon
    • Drums = Theodore
  • Unwitting Pawn: In Chipmunk Adventure.
  • Voice Types: Most fans can generally tell which chipmunk sings what, though the lines blur a few times when it comes to Alvin and Simon once Alvin goes into the lower end of his range (they share the same voice actor, Ross Jr.). This is possible due to the difference of pitch in each brother and their own vocal colors. At the most basic -
    • Alvin = Lyric Tenor [with Baritone range capabilities]
    • Simon = Baryton-Martin Baritone
    • Theodore = Treble

The lead vocalist of the band, Alvin is an impulsive and charming Attention Whore who always seems to make up hare-brained schemes to get what his goal is at the time, whether it be trying to help his brothers, keeping Dave from figuring something out, or getting out of a sticky situation.

  • The Ace: Pretty much this in The Alvin Show.
    • Throughout the franchise as well in varying degrees - part of the popular/cool kids, musically gifted (a great vocalist, a good dancer, raps, reeks with charm and stage presence, and plays both the guitar and harmonica, among others), athletic (plays basketball, football, soccer, etc.), and has legit skateboarding skills.
  • A Friend in Need: Alvin's there for those he cares about when he notices they're going through issues and/or are feeling down.
  • Anti-Hero / The Hero: Alvin's heart bears no malice, and he has set moral guidelines, but he lacks proper heroic traits that would bring to question a The Hero status. He works both.
  • Attention Whore: And can get rather petulant if that attention is taken away.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Brittany.
  • Berserk Button: Although he doesn't go 'berserk' per se, he doesn't like his cap being touched.
    • Then in the Squeakquel, when the bullies are picking on Theodore. Er, actually when any bully is picking on either Theodore or Simon in general.
  • Big Brother Instinct: For all of his faults, he looks out for and stands up for his brothers, mainly Theodore.
  • Big Little Brother: His original design was dwarfed by both of his "little" brothers. Likely to better brush off of their new personalities, meek and naive Theodore was designed to be diminutive to him, though the more mature Simon remained lankier than Alvin.
  • Brass Balls: Can get rather daring, even with authority figures...including his own surrogate father.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: He tends to use his loudmouth to make things difficult as an attempt to get his way.
  • Brought to You by the Letter "S": Brought to You by the Letter ‘A’.
  • Brutal Honesty: Alvin's capable of serving it, at times unwittingly when he gets frustrated or annoyed. While some characters do need it, he can feel guilty if it does hurt someone's feelings.
  • Catch Phrase: "Aw, nuts," "Yes, Dave?" and "Okay!"note
  • Character Tic: Alvin tends to do fancy tricks between his fingers and hands with an object (be it apple, basketball, a game chip in Chipwrecked, etc.). They vary in twirls, roll over shoulders, spins, and throws/catches.
  • Chick Magnet: When he's not screwing things up with his latest Zany Scheme.
  • Cute Munks Are Bastards: Alvin has been, sans the 60s series maybe, designed as a conventionally good looking/very cute anthropomorphic chipmunk. He also can be, you know, a Jerk Ass.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Not as much as Simon, but definitely there.
  • Ear Notch: His CGI self in the 2007 movie, The Squeakquel and Chipwrecked, perhaps to identify him as the scrappiest member of the group.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Alvin may be a Jerk Ass at times, but there's simply lines he would not cross and he's inherently good. It's what sets him miles apart from the franchise's typical school bullies or antagonists.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: He's the Foolish in comparison to Simon's more Responsible nature, who helplessly attempts to convince Alvin not do what he plans to.
  • Four Philosophy Ensemble: The Optimist.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The Choleric.
  • The Glorious War Of Brotherly Rivalry: A legit description when it comes to him and Simon really.
  • Glory Hound/Glory Seeker: Some of his plans are attempts at getting more famous or grabbing attention.
  • G-Rated Mental Illness: Succumbs to this when he’s forced to drink a potion in Meet Frankenstein where he starts acting like a typical insane cartoon character laughing manically, his tongue hanging out, spinning eyes, and pulling pranks. He gets better though.
  • The Hedonist: Most of the inspiration that motivates Alvin's actions is the inward desire for fun. This is also the reason why he tends to make pretty simple, mundane things more complicated than they need to be. For example, if the gang has to spy on someone, it has to go all the way, spy suit and all if possible.
  • Heroes Want Redheads: His most consistent romantic connection is with Brittany, who's a redhead. Songs in albums have even alluded them as being on and off.
  • Hidden Depths: Alvin's very self-assured, but he's been shown in rare instances to be insecure to an extent. He stands behind his talent and charm, so when he feels it's going awry in some way, the layers of his own glorification peels off.
  • High School Hustler: Though can be Elementary depending on what media you're going by.
  • Hot-Blooded: At times.
  • Incredibly Long Note: There's a genuine reason why he's lead vocal after all, franchise star perks aside. The 2007 movie played with it when they took The Chipmunks' cover of "Stayin' Alive" (from Club Chipmunk: The Dance Mixes) by making it about cheeseballs and having Alvin hit that long note as he went slow mo.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Has these in the 80s series and films, as well as the 2015 series.
    • Brown Eyes: Has these in the live-action film series, though they are more amber/gold.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Alvin's way of reasoning. It baffles Simon specifically.
  • It's All My Fault: Perhaps one of Alvin's best traits is that he can realize his own wrongdoings and how it affects others around him. He goes out of his way to make amends for them.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Although Alvin is very much self-centered and can be a certified Jerk Ass, he does care about his brothers and tends to turn things around as best he can once he knows he crossed a line. More so if any one of his siblings gets sad or disappointed by his actions. At the very core, despite his misgivings, Alvin's a good kid.
  • Large Ham: Tends to over dramatize and exaggerate his feelings, ideas (as in, his active imagination), or what he says. Sometimes on purpose, sometimes not.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Has an immunity to Karma Houdini, refreshingly so. Dave also makes certain he does not go unscathed.
  • The Leader: He is the leader of the group and when together with The Chipettes, the leader of all six.
  • Likes Older Women: There's at least an episode in each series where he, if not outright flirting, gets a Precocious Crush on an older woman (usually a teacher and/or principal).
  • Loveable Rogue: His defining trait.
  • Manipulative Bastard: His smarts lie in manipulating people and how to make them do what he needs them to do. What that is depends on the ploy he cooks up that day. He certainly knows how to get reactions out from others and how to use them to his advantage. Simon and Brittany are a lot harder to get fooled by him, but they fall victim regardless since he knows what strings to pull.
  • Middle Child Syndrome: Shades of it. He was the oldest (in the 80s series at least), but his archetype always fitted this in his trio of siblings. Alvin's the Black Sheep, the troublemaker, he acts out, he's loud, and lives for attention in comparison to his more moralistic, upright brothers. He also has doubts in how Dave feels about him as a son. Chipwrecked has him questioning the extent of Dave's love and blames himself as the reason he's more than likely not searching for them. In ALVINNN!!!, he states that him and Dave "have never been any closer" due to their common disinterest in math in one episode, and he loves this newfound bond. Implying it doesn't happen often.
  • Mood-Swinger: He can change emotions pretty quickly, and his over dramatic reactions to almost everything places him as really high in enthusiasm or at the bottom in exaggerated despair.
  • Nice Hat: His trademark red cap.
  • Not So Different: When Simon loses his personality, Alvin has to become the authority figure in Chipwrecked and he tries tries to stop Simon from dancing with Jeanette, this happens:
    Alvin: SIIMMOOOONN!!!!
Brittany: Alvin, you're starting to sound like Dave.
    Alvin: NNNNOOO!
  • The Protagonist: Of the entire franchise.
  • Role Reprisal: Ross (Jr.) still provides his singing voice for the live action theatrical movies as well as voicing him on new soundtracks.
  • Rounded Character: With a bit of Dynamic Character. He harbors both good and bad qualities with some Hidden Depths. He doesn't necessarily change his ways, but he evolves.
  • Phrase Catcher: “AAALLLLVVVVIIIN!”
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Simon's blue.
  • Retcon: Is the youngest in the 60s cartoon, the oldest in the 80s cartoon and films, and the middle child in the 2015 cartoon.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With Simon.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: The "small name" depends on the media, but the big ego is always consistent.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: With Simon and/or Brittany.
  • Temporarily a Villain: Often plays the villain in parody episodes or specials.
  • Too Much Alike: Him and Brittany. When you have two Attention Whores with big egos headbutting, getting along isn't on the list of priorities as much as besting each other is.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: They're brothers, but this summarizes his and Simon's relationship verbatim. How they play off each other may be the most dynamic interaction of the franchise.

The tallest, Simon has an IQ north of Einstein, possessing a dry sense of humor as well as a keen wit. He takes charge when Alvin goes too far with his hair brained schemes. Simon loves Alvin, although he secretly worries that they share the same gene pool.

Not only is he the child of innocence as well as the youngest, but Theodore is shy, loving, sensitive, chubby, gullible, trusting and naïve. In short, he is an easy target for Alvin's manipulations, often holding the swing vote between his two brothers' choices of action. Simon appeals to Theodore's better nature while Alvin goes straight to bribery.

    The Chipettes

The distaff counterparts to the Chipmunks.
  • Baby Talk: In Little Alvin and the Mini-Munks.
  • Beauty, Brains and Brawn:
    • Beauty = Brittany
    • Brains = Jeanette
    • Brawn = Eleanor
  • Belly Dancer/Go-Go Enslavement: Get this in The Chipmunk Adventure.
  • Big Damn Heroes: For the Chipmunks in The Chipmunk Adventure.
  • Birds of a Feather: When the Chipettes are with their respective individual Chipmunk counterpart.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead:
    • Blonde = Eleanor
    • Brunette = Jeanette
    • Redhead = Brittany
      • Though it's difficult to determine with Brittany, as her hair seems to change color, depending on the animation, coloring, etc, while her hair does appear red on some occasions, it mostly appears light brown, and in even rare occasions (merchandising) blonde.
  • Breakout Character: After their first appearance in the '80 series, they have become so popular and get more and more screentime overtime in the series becoming regular characters. Now the Chipettes are integral part of the franchise and appear in all media.
  • Character Development: The Chipettes were originally conceived as female mirrors of The Chipmunks, however, over time, they slowly began to develop more dimension and personality that distinguished them from their respective Chipmunk counterpart.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: Though each Chipette’s color shade is more lighter/feminine with their respective counterpart . . . although Eleanor’s questionable.
    • Pink (Red) = Brittany
    • Purple (Blue) = Jeanette
    • Light teal (Green) = Eleanor
  • Distaff Counterparts: Duh.
    • Brittany for Alvin
    • Jeanette for Simon
    • Eleanor for Theodore
  • Freudian Trio:
  • Funny Afro: Inadvertently gain them in Chipmunk Adventure after a run-in with Hurricane Arlene off screen.
  • Happily Adopted: By Miss Miller in the 80/90s show, by Dave in the Live-Action/CGI films.
  • Human Mail: Arrived at Jett Records in a FedEx package in The Squeakquel.
  • Little Stowaways: How they got to America from Australia in their origin story from the 80s/90s show.
  • Nice, Mean and In-Between: Jeanette is sweet-natured but shy, Brittany is hot-headed and selfish, and Eleanor is caring but more assertive than Jeanette.
  • Pretty in Mink: The girls wear fur-trimmed capes over their belly dancer outfits when they visit Antarctica in The Chipmunk Adventure.
  • Role Reprisal: Janice Karman still provides their singing voices as well as doing their voices in two of the video games. She fully reprises her role for the 2015 series.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: The Chipettes have gotten more and more screentime overtime, to the point where the last episode Ruby-Spears (the first showrunning company, followed by DiC) had produced for the series doesn't have Dave or the Chipmunks themselves in it.
  • Town Girls:
    • Femme = Brittany
    • Neither = Jeanette
    • Butch = Eleanor
  • Unwitting Pawn: In Chipmunk Adventure.

Brittany Miller/Seville

The lead singer and the oldest, Brittany has a pleasing facial and physical appearance, though at times can be vain and self-serving with the extreme desire to have whatever she wants, but is still very caring.

Jeanette Miller/Seville

Being the youngest of her sisters, Eleanor has a lot in common with Theodore in terms of body shape, interests and color of attire but she is braver and more athletic.
  • Acrofatic: She is a gifted athlete, despite her larger physique.
  • Big Eater: As Theodore she love food and is interested in cooking
  • The Big Girl: Of the Chipettes.
  • Brown Eyes: Has brown eyes.
  • Character Development: Became more outgoing and far more active than Theodore, playing just about any sport the school had to offer, while still maintaining a passion for culinary delights.
  • Costumes Change Your Size: She seems to slim down whenever she wears anything besides her usual outfit.
  • The Cutie
  • Damsel in Distress: Near the end of Meet the Wolfman.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her regular haistyle.
  • The Heart
  • The Ingenue: Only in the live-action movie, she seems extremely naive.
  • The Lancer: To Brittany.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Masculine Girl to Theodore's Feminine Boy.
  • The One Who Wears Shoes: Her CGI self in The Squeakqueal is insisted by Ian she has to be taller when onstage, though once the Chipettes realize Ian was Evil All Along, Eleanor takes off the shoes and throws them at his face.
  • Spanner in the Works: In The Chipmunk Adventure, if she hadn't made the decision to convince her sisters to take the baby penguin back to his family in Antarctica, they wouldn't have run off course and attracted the attention of the villains, and in turn might never have found out about the diamonds and the true motive behind the race.
  • Stout Strength
  • Supreme Chef
  • Team Mom: Somewhat, as she's the one who tries to keep the brash Brittany in line, and was the one who looked after the baby penguin in The Chipmunk Adventure the most.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak

Recurring Characters
    Clyde Crashcup
Voiced by:
SHEPHARD MENKEN – The Alvin Show & The Chipmunks episode “Back to Our Future”
CHARLES BERENDT – A Chipmunk Christmas

Clyde Crashcup is a scientist, though he’s primarily an inventor rather than a researcher, whose experiments invariable fail. He typically would invent something by taking a pencil out of his lab coat's pocket and drawing a picture in midair of his conception: the picture would then become the actual object.

    Miss Beatrice Miller

The Seville’s’ myopic, elderly next door neighbor as well as the Chipmunks’ babysitter, Miss Miller is the Chipettes’ guardian, introduced in the first episode of the fourth season.
  • Apron Matron
  • Butt Monkey
  • The Cameo/The Faceless: Is only heard screaming “DAAAAAVVVVIIIIIID!!!” on the phone in Meet the Wolfman because Alvin scared the Chipettes to death and they ran all the way to their house in panic.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Sometimes has strong traces of this, especially in A Chipmunk Adventure, though it's considerably toned down in later seasons as she becomes established as the parental figure for the Chipettes.
  • Drives Like Crazy
  • The Gambling Addict: In one episode, though she gets better.
  • I Was Quite a Looker
  • The Klutz: She makes Jeanette look well-coordinated and graceful.
  • Not So Different: Somewhat for the Chipettes.
  • Role Reprisal: Goodman reprised her role of Miss Miller in Meet Frankenstein as well as Meet the Wolfman nine years after the 80s/90s series.
  • Spanner in the Works: It's thanks to her running the Vorsteins's car off the road (while on the way to pick up Dave from the airport) in Chipmunk Adventure that Klaus and Claudia are finally apprehended at the end.
  • Team Mom

    Ian Hawke
Portrayed by:
DAVID CROSSAlvin and the Chipmunks 2007 movie, The Squeakqual & Chipwrecked

The founder and former chairman of JETT Records, Ian Hawke attended college with his ex-roommate Dave and Claire Wilson. When Dave first entered the headquarters, Ian wanted to be his boss since he was no longer Dave's college roommate; instead, he became his "best friend."
  • Bald of Evil
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive
  • Everyone Went to School Together: Roommates with Dave in college and probably knew Claire Wilson who also went to the same college.
  • Greed
  • Heel-Face Turn: In Chipwrecked, though still kind of a dick, but he does help Dave, the Chipmunks, the Chipettes and Zoe get off the island.
  • And thanks to Zoe, in the end Ian finally gets his fame and wealth back because this time, he used the right method to deserve it.
  • Jerkass
  • Jerkass Has a Point: In The Squeakquel, calls the principal out for being biased in favor of the Chipmunks and not allowing a democratic vote.
  • Manipulative Bastard
  • Meaningful Name: Hawks are natural enemies of chipmunks.
  • Villain Ball: Ian's plan in The Squeakquel worked fine until he threatened the Chipettes just because they all wanted equal partnership in the performance.explaination

Whispering by:

Clyde Crashcup’s short assistant, Leonardo doesn’t speak, only whispering into Clyde’s ear, informing him of his ideas. Leonardo frequently invents or perfects an invention whereas Clyde takes the credit from him, not to mention he’s usually emotionally displeased when Clyde insults his intelligence.

Stanley the Eagle

As his name may suggest, Stanley’s an eagle who befriends the Chipmunks.
