Characters / Alchemy Stars Umbraton

Go To

Originally the slums of Lumopolis, Umbraton is a collection of towns located beneath the floating island of Azurite. No longer under the authority of Lumopolis, Umbraton is controlled by local guilds and gangs.

General Tropes

  • The Mafia: Istvan and his gang are pretty much just the mob, being a gang that essentially controls all of the undercity of Umbraton. However, Istvan's rise to power was entirely for the sake of improving the lives of those living in Umbraton, and while he and his gang are merciless to those who do them or Umbraton wrong, they also maintain a sense of infrastructure and government in the city, making this a fairly positive spin on the trope.

    Patty & Patsy
New members of the Istvan Guild in Umbraton. They're always hyperactive, so please watch out!

    Seleucid
A tall, strong warrior who often strides throughout Umbraton in full armor with a great sword. A man of few words, he has never taken his helmet off and prefers letting brute force do his talking.

Umbraton Maverick

    Connolly
A kind-hearted girl who is rumored to be born into a declining noble family. Though she lives in Umbraton, she's almost painfully shy... She manages to keep her foothold in the tumultuous Umbraton thanks to her clarinet and her unique ability to manipulate water creatures.

    Hydrad
This guy from Umbraton isn't one who hangs around with gangs. In fact, he's a lone wolf. A rebel, he shows utter contempt for the order of Lumopolis and is inexplicably hostile to the nobles...

    Leona
The maverick of Umbraton who possesses Dragon Power. She is a proud and arrogant person who is moody all the time. She always feels that the fate of her family rests on her shoulders. This Dragon Power granted her great power, but it also became the source of suppressed anger and hatred in her heart.

    Jane

    Dayna

Razor's Edge
Already the leader of the Spearows despite her young age, she is well known for establishing a firm foothold in the dark and grimy alleys of Umbraton with her unsurpassed determination and diabolical, sneaky weapons.

    Sariel
Born in Illumina, she wandered to Umbraton in search of her grandfather. She is rather absentminded and often deceived.

    Areia
A wandering mercenary in Umbraton, the cursed thorns she bears causes her body to become weak and make her depend on her ancestral magic sword to alleviate the condition. She searches for a way to be rid of the curse, all while shying away from others she might hurt with her thorns.
  • Blessed with Suck: The curse she has is a congenital condition that makes her body go fatally feeble, requiring her to hold onto her sword to resist its effects. However, this caused sharp thorns to grow all over her body, which can become a hazard for others, forcing her to stay away from people. Not only that, she can't find many clothes that won't get in the way of her thorns and has to stitch up her current clothes should they get torn by the thorns. Some terminal chats have her asking the Navigator for help fixing her cloak, which is apparently a frequent thing.
  • Cinderella Plot: Her Night to Remember outfit describes her as a fairytale princess, with its story, "Fancy Dress", having the corresponding plot. It starts with Kleken making up a fairy tale of an ash-covered girl you'd know, and Areia attends a dance that she leaves before midnight, which is when the dress's magic expires. On the bright side, she gets to dance with her prince Navigator in the end.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: She appears rather cold and intimidating, especially with the thorns and wicked-looking sword she holds. In truth, she is only worried that other people might get hurt by her thorns and so appears aloof while actually being a soft-spoken worrywart in person.
  • No Social Skills: Having to stay away from people has put a number on her sociability.
    • Her group talk with Sariel has Areia apologize for getting into a fight the first time because she thought Sariel hated her thorns. For Sariel's part, she thought the thorns were hurting Areia and so she tried to remove them, hence her suddenly apologizing for failing.
    • Many of her Terminal messages with the Navigator talk about her loneliness, with one nighttime chat talking about greeting and playing with a sudden number of people... who all turn out to be Fireflies. Two other evening chats also have her suddenly messaging the Navigator for no particular reason other than to chat.
  • Ship Tease: Besides being rather close to the Navigator in the terminal chats and archive, her stories have some telling moments.
    • In "New Clothes", the two wander around trying to get new clothes for her. At the end, the Navigator doesn't fail to cheer her up, which she clearly appreciates even if she doesn't believe it, with Sheol teasing him that his "date" is leaving.
    • For her Night to Remember outfit story, when Hydrad remarks on Areia's cheer, Kleken replies it's because a certain someone is going to be at the dance party, the scene pointedly cutting to the Navigator. She then dances with the Navigator as the magic on her dress expires as midnight comes, making butterfly-like effects swarm off to frame their private moment together.
