Private Eye in the Distant Sea provides examples of:

  • Accidental Hero: Kogoro’s new gold covered business cards are a bit gauche, but his daughter Ran sends them out into the ocean for the helicopter to find when she is drowning.
  • Accidental Murder: Sasaura's death turns out to be this, where he falls off a cliff while being pursued by a Coast Guard officer (revealed to be Kurata).
  • Big Bad: The spy codenamed “X” is the main antagonist and driving force of the film, influencing events both in the Aegis Destroyer 'Hotaka' and in the Kyoto-Osaka area. There is a murder mystery revolving around the death of Lt. Yousuke Sasaura, of which Masaaki Kurata is the murderer, but that takes a backseat to the spy plot and is summated as the penultimate setpiece after "X" is apprehended.
  • Big Damn Heroes Ohtaki shoots Takekawa just in time so Heiji, who tackled Kazuha to safety, only injured his arm.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Kogoro’s business cards both later hinder Conan when tries to attack Spy “X” and lead to Ran’s rescue when she falls off the boat.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: When Yuki reveals Spy “X” is not his father, Ran engages him in combat. While he does not become a punching bag, X is unable to really hurt Ran until he uses rope to knock her off the boat.
  • Demoted to Extra: Haibara and Agasa do not physically meet the rest of the gang for the film’s runtime.
  • No Name Given: Aside from the fake name he used when he pretended to be Yuki’s father, Spy “X” is the only name the Big Bad is given.
  • Taking the Bullet: When Kazuha catches up to him, Takekawa shoots her but Heiji tackles her and hurts his arm.
