The Man They Called A Magician…!note

"Let’s end this game here, Mr. Sneak-Thief."
Conan Edogawa

Detective Conan: Magician of the Silver Sky is the 8th Detective Conan Theatrical Film in the franchise. It was directed by Kenji Kodama, written by Kazunari Kouchi, produced by both Masahito Yoshioka and Michihiko Suwa and scored by Katsuo Ono. It was released on April 17, 2004.

Kaito Kid strikes again! An actress asked for Kogoro Mouri to protect a precious jewel of hers which Kid has vowed to steal. On the day of the theft, Kaito Kid dressed up as Shin’ichi and matched wits with Conan, and fled in the end. To thank them, the actress invited Kogoro and family and friends to Sapporo, but a bigger scheme, and a great emergency is just about to unravel high above the clouds in the plane that they're taking...

Magician in the Silver Sky provides examples of:

  • Big Bad: Subverted, for the first time in the film series. While Kaito Kid's plot to steal the Jewel of Destiny kickstarts the plot, he gets put into a protagonist role in the second half of the film, and while there is a murder mystery in the middle, where Natsuki Sakai poisons her boss (and indirectly causes the plane to crash), the crime is solved relatively quickly afterwards and she's placed Out of Focus right at that moment; shortly after, the falling plane takes the crown as the film’s biggest threat.
  • Broken Pedestal: Downplayed and Played for Laughs. Sonoko is annoyed when her idol Kaito Kid bails on the falling airplane but it becomes a Rebuilt Pedestal when it’s revealed he left so he could help them land.
  • Disaster Movie: The main conflict for most of the movie: Can Conan and Kid land a crashing plane?
  • Identity Impersonator: Kid’s MO. He does it a couple of times but noticeably he takes on Shin’ichi’s identity, much to Conan’s displeasure.
  • In Medias Res: The film begins with Conan and Kid’s confrontation then works its way back from there.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Natsuki only wanted to kill Juri for robbing her of potential Hollywood job opportunities. Unfortunately, the plane was piloted by Juri's associates during her time as a flight attendant as well as big fans of her work, neither of which are things she could have known, much less anticipate that they'd take her cyanide-laced hand.
