Ruben Brandt is a psychotherapist who suffers from nightmares about famous paintings, his patients being expert thieves help him to travel around the world and steal the paintings in order to stop his nightmares while Mike Kowalski, a detective is after them.Tropes
- Abusive Parents: Gerhard Brandt, Ruben Brandt's dad was a scientist experimenting with his son's subconscious. Gerhard Brandt forced his son to watch cartoons with him where he secretly put famous paintings between their frames causing Ruben Brandt nightmares. His wife left him to save her other son, Mike Kowalski from him.
- Anti-Hero: Other criminals try to capture Ruben Brandt and his friends for stealing paintings, not because of the law, but because for the reward they can gain from it.
- Baby Carriage: A woman carries a baby down the street into Mike Kowalski's and Mimi's Car Chase. Both avoids them with their cars in time.
- Catapult Nightmare: Ruben Brandt tries to save a little girl from falling out of a moving train's window but the girl bites his arm and forces him to fall off with her while an another train is about to hit them. Then Ruben Brandt wakes up back in reality where he fell out of his own bed.
- Dream Intro: The film begins with Ruben Brandt having a nightmare about almost getting hit by a train.
- Foreshadowing: When Mike Kowalski sits in a restaurant Ruben Brandt walks in front of him while a window is in between them, for a moment Ruben Brandt fits into Mike Kowalski's reflection on the glass. This foreshadows the two are brothers.
- Hero Antagonist: Mike Kowalski's and the police force's goal is to arrest Ruben Brandt and his team of criminals for stealing paintings. Mike Kowalski changes however after discovering Ruben Brandt did it because it is the only way to stop his harmful nightmares.
- Human Mail: Ruben Brandt dreams about getting kidnapped by a postman, putting him into his car and deliver him into an airplane. Then he gets grabbed by an another postman and jumps with him out of the airplane while flying.
- In-Universe Soundtrack: A band plays Do You Love Me in a club during Mike Kowalski's and Mimi's Chase Scene.
- Paper People: One of Ruben's patients is a two-dimensional man, who at one point claims to be the son of a three dimensional woman and a line.
