** Daniel Whitehall is a mad scientist that conducted heinous experiments on Jiaying to steal her powers. And before that, he would bring in random subjects to simply test the Diviner to see who was worthy, not caring if his subjects died.
** Watchdogs: They have a whole campaign against SHIELD for housing Inhumans and other empowered characters.
** Ellen Nadeer: A senator who aligns herself with Russian terrorists to kill the Inhumans, viewing them as threats that need to be exterminated out of some twisted DisproportionateRetribution for her mother's death, despite the fact that her mother was killed during the Battle of New York, which didn't involve the Inhumans.
** Nathaniel Malick is also this to the Inhumans, teaming up with the Chronicoms so he can capture the ones at Afterlife, viewing them as being undeserving of their powers.

* ForWantOfANail: The reason the Framework is a CrapsackWorld -- each of the five prisoners was calmed enough to accept it with a CosmicRetcon of "[[MyGreatestFailure their greatest regret]]" -- which had world-shattering consequences;
** Melinda May's [[spoiler:assignment in Bahrain ended with her killing an Inhuman child who was mind-controlling everyone around her. In the Framework, she succeeded in rescuing the child, who went on to kill over a hundred people in the US, permanently souring humanity's view of Inhumans and leaving her a cold, professional shell]].
** Phil Coulson [[spoiler:has become weary of his life as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and subconsciously [[IJustWantToBeNormal desired a normal life]]. In the Framework, he thus rejected an offer of S.H.I.E.L.D. membership; without him, the Avengers never formed, and [[Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier HYDRA completed its coup d'état and rose to power]], killing most of the world's superhumans and subversives]].
** Alphonso Mackenzie [[spoiler:mourns his daughter, Hope, who died just days after birth. In the Framework, she survived, and he never joined S.H.I.E.L.D., instead living a quiet life as a single father]].
** Jeffrey Mace [[spoiler:has always regretted not being a true Inhuman, instead being dependent on a chemical cocktail for hour-long boosts of superhuman strength and resilience. In the Framework, he is Inhuman, and the heroic director of the S.H.I.E.L.D. resistance]].
** Leo Fitz [[spoiler:has always [[WellDoneSonGuy desired his father's acceptance]], a thuggish drunk who bemoans his son's love of science. In the Framework, his teetotaler father dotes on him... while still being thuggish and authoritarian, raising Fitz as a Mengele-like MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate who proudly builds weapons for HYDRA]].

** [[Recap/AgentsOfSHIELDS1E5GirlInTheFlowerDress "Girl in the Flower Dress"]] starts with [[Characters/MCUDaisyJohnson Skye]] and [[Characters/MCUGrantWard Ward]] playing ''TabletopGame/{{Battleship}}'' because he wants to evaluate her thought process -- and because he likes board games. This underlines that he is the team's BigBrotherMentor. In turn, Skye's celebration when she hits is funny and a little hammy. That, along with his comment about finding it refreshing to have a break from her training, cements that she's a DorkKnight. When she wins the game, she forces him to [[SayIt say "you sunk my battleship"]] and takes great delight in it.
** At the end of [[Recap/AgentsOfSHIELDS1E9Repairs "Repairs"]], Team Coulson plays ''TabletopGame/{{Scrabble}}'' to destress from the episode's events. DitzyGenius Simmons lets her {{bookworm}} side shine by cobbling up the word aglet from her tiles. The others react by asking WhatTheHeckIsAnAglet until Skye googles it.

* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: Even before being revealed to be evil, Ward's tragic past as a victim of abuse (from both his parents and elder brother) was referenced more than once. He is eventually outed as a bad guy towards the end of season one and remains Team Coulson's most persistent and reoccurring enemy through the next season-and-a-half. Despite this, he likes to constantly tell others (and himself) that his actions are either not his fault or are completely justified due to his terrible childhood, but the other main characters constantly make it a point to call him out on his actions and even say that in his anger towards his family, he's become something worse than them.
