NSFLZ Chapter 19: Not Quite The Last Airbender

Jet shows up, and proceeds to confront Zuko over the misunderstanding that they're gay lovers. They very nearly come to blows until Hakoda comes up, evidently even less approving of Jet than he is of Zuko, and forces Jet to withdraw. Hakoda evidently wants to institute an official Parental Marriage Veto system, and while Katara's tempted to argue back, she can't because Jet is a jerk, and she doesn't want to draw any attention to her Secret Relationship with Zuko (as guilty as she is over keeping it secret).

Evidently, Avatar Kyoshi herself told Ty Lee that she wasn't fit to be a Kyoshi warrior (The author points out that spirits might be visible to non-Avatars, and while this does happen, it usually only happens in the spirit world). Aang points out that not only is Kyoshi a bit stern with the two of them, but Gyatso told him (recently, not a century ago) that he isn't the last airbender, even if he doesn't know where the others are, which makes this a plot point shared with How I Became Yours.

Apparently, Jet is just as unhinged as he was before, suggesting that all firebenders are evil or pretending to be good, and he's determined to ruin Zuko's life the same way Zuko ruined his. Katara, after a bit of threatening Jet that he misinterprets as flirting, notes that she sees a bit of herself in him, and I agree, but only to a point, since Katara more easily steps back from doing someething she might regret.

Sokka apparently gets to see Yue- not just the moon, and Katara hopes he'll find closure.

Zuko admits that he feels some degree of jealousy over Jet, but he and Katara work things out. It's an interesting look at how Zuko views a romantic rival (by comparison, in Smoke and Shadow, he and Kei Lo have reasons to distrust each other that go a bit deeper than Mai), but perhaps the story would have been better off if Jet had died of his injuries under Lake Laogai. Zuko and Katara send off boats to their cousin and mother, respectively, and agree to call each other secret boyfriend and girlfriend.

The author points out that Aang being the last airbender would lead to all sorts of inbreeding, and make it nearly impossible to resurrect the Air Nomads without him having sex with all the Air Acolytes. That's a realistic observation, but I personally like the idea of the spirits bestowing airbending on individuals with potential (just like the lionturtles had given people like Avatar Wan bending eons ago)- some of whom are of better moral character than others- more believable than Sozin missing some unrealized airbenders.

What I liked

  • Interesting look at people wanting to talk to dead loved ones.

What I didn't like

  • Jet continues to eat up a large part of the remaining plot.
  • Fanon regarding Aang not being the last airbender.
