Scene 7: Days Long Gone

It occurs to me that last time, Deneb mentioned Romeo And Juliet. Does Shakespeare exist in Zenobia? How does that even work?

Anyway, as I said before, from now on, the game takes the kiddy gloves off and actually show effort. So with no more delay, we head for the slums of Zenobia.

Scene 7: Days Long Gone
  • Music: Wall of Defense

As you can see, this map is bigger than any we've seen so far. Not counting the bases, this map boasts 11 settlements. Since we can only deploy 10 units, the old strategy of keeping a garrison on every town flies out the window.

The other big factor is the wall around Zenobia. This wall prevents land units from crossing, in both direction. This means that for the first part of the stage, enemy units will all be Low Sky and High Sky. This means no town is out of reach. Most will make a beeline for our base, but many will try to reach un-garded towns amongst the southern towns on the coast, west of the base. When the wall is destroyed (more on that later) ground units will be added to the air units. It's thus important to destroy ALL air units before taking down the wall so we are not overwhelmed.

But that's not all! No. On top of that, we have other things to worry about. There's not one, but two special characters to recruit in our army.

First order of business is liberating the town southeast of the base. Followed by the towns and hidden temple east. Obviously, flying units go to the hidden temple, to play interception with units attempting to cross the sea.

Post Ina is freed first by my main man Lans, netting us VII: Chariot.

In the castle to the north is general Kaus Debonair, one of the 4 Devas. If the Empire has sent someone like him out here, they must really want to stop the rebels!

Pruzen is freed and gives us XIX: Sun. Enemy squads being closing in on our base.

Zenobia used to be the most beautiful city in the world, but now it's just a giant slum. There are alot of people there who have lost their families and their homes. I guess they thought that by going to the city they could have a better life, but...

The hidden temple nets us V: Hierophant. There a moon meets us.

The gates to castle Zenobia have been closed to stop the rebels' attack. But I can help! Please take these termites! If you use these, even the strongest walls will be brought to the ground!
So we learn two important lessons: All walls are made out of wood. And Termites in Zenobia are badass, capable of making entire fortifications vanish in seconds! As a note, Termites can be found on some defeated units, and work on all walls, even those of future stages. Using termites will destroy all the walls on a map. Here, it will do both Zenobia and By Roit's.

Destin frees the southern temple, netting us O: Fool and another Sword of Euros. I dunno who this Euros is, but he had alot of sword. Not complaining though!

Alot of units head past the base to Post Ina. And therein lies an opportunity for what I like to call "Douchebag Ping Pong Maneuver". I deploy my vampyre unit and move them directly south of the base, just a bit, after the units have past it. Lans engages them in combat, wins, causing them to be bounced back... next to the vampyre. He further beats them, and the survivors are bounced back... Next to Lans again. You can ping pong a few units this way for quick deaths.

Destin frees Fillia, netting XII: Hanged Man.

General Debonair is very set in his ways. The other day, a merchant tried to bribe him for exclusive right to a new trade route. Not only did the merchant not get the rights, but he was arrested! I'll bet the reason Debonair was sent all the way down here is because he's so straight.

Palma Nova is freed by Cube the Samurai, netting me another XII: Hanged Man.

Debonair is a member of the empire, but he's actually a fine man. Very polite. Very honorable. If only everyone in the Empire was like him, then I am sure they would get the support of the people.

As the number of air units plummet, I use the calm to free more towns. Kal Robst nets me X: Fortune.

Have you heard about the barbarian Ashe? He used to be the head of the royal knights but he was arrested for executing the royal family. But it wasn't really him! The executioner was the Black Knight Gares! The prince of the Highlands! The mage Rashidi used his magic to make Gares look like Ashe. Ashe is completely innocent, but he never defended himself. Why do you think he did that? Because he blames himself for not being able to protect Gran's family. That's why.

Liberating Anberg gets me VI: Lovers, and we meet Lyon.

So you're the rebels, huh? Glad you came by. My name is Lyon the beast! Best beast tamer in the world! Have you come to hire me?
We could hire him now, but it's cheaper to wait till the stage is over, as he lowers his asking prize.
Well then just get outta here! I don't need to waste my time with you.

Elrangen is freed for a XVIII: Moon card.

After King Gran was assassinated, everyone in the royal family was executed. They even say that the executor was the general of the Royal Zenobian Knights! Can you believe it? The general... I think his name was Ashe...

The last Roshian temple gets us XVII: Star. I send a flying unit to the walled city of By Roit. Better to do this before using the termites. I also move my units around Zenobia, in preparation for the walls falling. There we get another Moon and meet Ashe.

My name is Ashe. An old man who was ready to die. I've been imprisoned in this castle for 20 years now. I never thought I'd see the light of day again, thank you. So you are the rebels I've been hearing about? I am sorry you have to find me at my grave. How about it, would you be willing to let me join you?
Of course
Thank you. I will spend what little of my life is left with you.

I need to deploy Ashe, but first I need to deal with his unit. He has three knights in the back row, and a golem in the front. Ewww. I move his knights to the front row, scrap the golem, and give him some Dollmaster and Cleric action. Ashe also gets my spare sword of Euros.

Before taking down the wall, I go after the many, many hidden treasures. First is a Peridat Sword, +11 Str, Cold element, Lightning Bow, +7 str, electric element. Another Dragon's claw. A Sigmund sword, +19 str, electric, an orb bolt (+15 shock resist, +7 physical) and lastly an earth charm, +3 to fire/cold/lighting.

I use the termite, the wall goes down... and it's a torrent. A dozen units pop out of Zenobia and begin moving south. Since they move south, and there's no point to kill em all because that would affect my unit's alignment, I move Ash in from the east to cut a line to Debonair. Lans is used to defeat a few units Ashe could encounter, so he's not softened up when he meets Debonair. As it turns out... Debonair and Ashe know each other.

Ashe: Hello Debonair. It's been a long time. The Highlanders are supposed to be a race of proud warriors, but look at you! You've all become just a bunch of assassins! Where's your pride as a warrior? And why do you think a great general such as yourself has been sent to a place like this? Endora is just trying to keep you out of her hair. Think about it!
Debonair: Shut Up! I was sent here to stop you! Sent here to stop the fools who are trying to disturb the peace!
Ashe: Disturb the peace? Look at this place! What was once the greatest city in the world is now nothing but a slum! Is this the perfect world you've dreamed of? Is this what Endora wants?
Debonair: Stop talking about her Highness that way!
Ashe: Very well, we'll just have to show you another way.

Debonair Vs. Ashe
Debonair is the first serious bosses. He's a general, a class you can't even make units into (We will have two generals in the game, both of them special characters). He can attack twice from the back row, once using Sonic wave, a weaker version Iainuki, followed by a melee attack. And he has HP worthy of a Paladin. On top of that, he has two red dragons tanking for him. Woohoo. First, time to use a Justice card to soften everyone up. Debonair doesn't hit that hard, but man can can he take punishment.

I takes 4 rounds, and a fool and hermit cards to finally bring Debonair to his knees.

Debonair: I can't believe I've lost... Empress Endora HAS changed... She's not like she once was... I am willing to die for the sake of my Empress, but I will NOT die for an Impostor! It seems there was something I should have done before fighting with the Rebels. I am forced by honor to admit defeat for now. We'll meet again gentlemen.

Defeating Debonair nets us 59475 goths.

I'll save on the details of the revisit for next time, when we go to Avalon, and find someone other than king Arthur.

Those termites...I have so many questions, yet so little time. Mainly, I have to wonder where that average NPC harvested them from. I mean, if they were encountered naturally in the Zenobian wilderness, it's amazing that anything's left standing. Able to cross an entire country and clear all defenses in a matter of seconds...yeah, dragons don't seem all that impressive in comparison.

LOL Too true. I wish we could recruit the termites! It's one of those Fridge Logic inducing moments. Where do the termites come from? Why are they so good? Why doesn't the empire learn and build stone defenses?

Another bit of fridge logic is Debonair's comment on how the queen as changed. Seeing as she's murdered Gran 20 years ago AND had her son pose as Ashe and kill Gran's family (Babies included), it's not like her Heel Face Turn is recent. And Debonair is not that old, its unlikely he even worked for Endora 20 years ago.

Wall of Defense is the best track in the game.

Regarding the Fridge Logic with the termites, it only exists in the English version - in the Japanese version, the item was called the Trojan Horse. Still creates some fridge logic, though - how do they know about Troy in this world?
